Αʹ. I longed for you, O children, and I was longed for in equal measure. For I am persuaded, if I must also add an oath to my word, Yes, by your boasting, brethren, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. For the Holy Spirit has made this oath for me, by which we have been moved toward you, that we might prepare for the Lord a people for his own possession. Consider how great the assurance is; both I persuade myself, and I insist on your behalf. And there is nothing surprising. For those whose Spirit is common, common also is their feeling; and for whom the feeling is equal, equal also is the belief. For what one has not experienced, he would not believe in another; but he who has experienced it is more ready for assent, an unseen witness of an unseen feeling, a familiar mirror of another's form. For this reason I could not bear to be absent from you any longer, although I was sufficiently annoyed and vexed by things here; not only with what cities bring (with mobs, tumults, marketplaces, theaters, excesses, insults, those who lead and are led, who fine and are fined, who mourn and are mourned, who weep, rejoice, marry, bury, are praised, are slandered, the stuff of evil, the world's ferment, with its sudden reversals, as in the Euripus and with its winds), but also now with these more solemn and honored things, I mean those concerning this bema 35.1229 and the holy table; of which we, seeming to hold the power, and being among those who draw near to God, I fear lest we draw near wrongly, and, like stubble to a fire, not bearing the fire.
Βʹ. Nevertheless I have returned to you, having run away by compulsion, but not having run to you by compulsion, but rather very eagerly, and with willing feet, as the saying goes, the Spirit so leading, just like a stream, which is forced uphill, but rushes downhill. Truly one day is a whole lifetime for a man, for those who are sick with longing. For the case of Jacob seems to me to be otherwise; who, serving Laban the Syrian for fourteen years for the two maidens, did not grow weary; For to him, it says, all the days were as one day, because of his love for them. Perhaps because the object of his desire was in his sight, or because it is a light thing to labor for love, even if delay brings grief. Thus what is ready to hand is slow to inspire desire, as one of those before us said. I at any rate, when I was present, felt very little of this feeling, but when I was separated, I knew longing to be a sweet tyrant; and nothing new in that. For if a herdsman so laments a calf that has gone away from the herd, and a shepherd a sheep missing from a flock of ten, and a bird its nest, which it has left for a short while, so that the one, taking up his pipes, and going up to some lookout point, fills the reeds with his despondency, and calls back, as if they were rational, the wandering animals; and if they should obey, he rejoices more than in all the others together, for whom he had no anxiety; while the other, cooing, hastens to its nest, and cooing falls upon its nestlings, and covers them with its wings; how much would rational flock mean to a good shepherd, for which he has also faced some danger, since this too adds to the affection?
Γʹ. As for me, I fear the grievous wolves, lest they, watching for our moment of darkness, tear the flock apart with captivating and violent words; 35.1232 since they watch for inopportune moments, not having the strength to prevail openly. But I fear the

Βʹ. Πλὴν ἐπανῆλθον ὑμῖν, βίᾳ μὲν ἀποδραμὼν, οὐ βίᾳ δὲ προσδραμὼν, ἀλλὰ καὶ μάλα προθύμως, καὶ αὐτομάτοις ποσὶ, τὸ τοῦ λόγου, τοῦ Πνεύματος οὕτως ἄγοντος, καθάπερ τι ῥεῦμα, πρὸς μὲν τὸ ἄναντες βιαζόμενον, εἰς δὲ τὸ πρανὲς ἐπειγόμενον. Ὄν τως ἡμέρα μία, βίος ὅλος ἀνθρώπου, τοῖς πόθῳ κάμνουσιν. Τὸ γὰρ τοῦ Ἰακὼβ ἑτέρως ἔχειν μοι φαίνεται· ὃς ἔτη δεκατέσσαρα δουλεύων τῷ Σύρῳ Λάβαν ὑπὲρ τῶν δύο παρθένων οὐκ ἔκαμνεν· Ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῷ, φησὶν, αἱ πᾶσαι ἡμέραι, ὡς ἡμέρα μία, διὰ τὸ ἀγαπᾷν αὐτάς. Ἴσως ὅτι ἐν ὄψεσιν ἦν τὸ ποθούμενον, ἢ ὅτι κοῦφον τὸ κάμνειν ἔρωτι, κἂν ἡ ἀναβολὴ τὸ λυπηρὸν ἔχῃ. Οὕτως τὸ ἕτοιμον εἰς ἐξουσίαν, ἀργὸν εἰς ἐπιθυμίαν, ὥς τις ἔφη τῶν πρὸ ἡμῶν. Ἐγὼ γοῦν ἡνίκα μὲν παρήμην, ἐλάχιστα τοῦ πάθους ἐπαισθανόμενος, ἡνίκα δὲ ἐχωρίσθην, ἔγνων τὸν πόθον τὸν γλυκὺν τύραννον· καινὸν δὲ οὐδέν. Εἰ γὰρ τοσοῦτον ὀδύρεται καὶ βουκόλος μόσχον τῆς ἀγέλης ἀποφοιτήσαντα, καὶ ποιμὴν πρόβατον ἐλλεῖψαν δεκάδι, καὶ ὄρνεον νοσσιὰν, ἣν πρὸς ὀλίγον ἀπέλιπεν, ὥστε οἱ μὲν τὰς σύριγγας λαβόντες, ἐπί τινα σκοπιὰν ἀνελθόντες, πληροῦσι τῆς ἀθυμίας τοὺς δόνακας, καὶ ἀνακαλοῦνται, ὡς λογικὰ, τὰ πλανώμενα· κἂν ὑπακούσωσι, χαίρουσι μᾶλλον ἢ πᾶσιν ὁμοῦ τοῖς ἄλλοις, ὧν οὐκ ἐφρόντισαν· τὸ δὲ τρύζον ἐπὶ τὴν καλιὰν ἵεται, καὶ τρύζουσι προσπίπτει τοῖς νεοσσοῖς, καὶ περιέπει ταῖς πτέρυξι· πηλίκον ἂν εἴη δεξιῷ ποιμένι λογικὰ θρέμματα, καὶ ὧν τι προεκινδύνευσεν, ἐπεὶ καὶ τοῦτο τῷ φίλτρῳ προσ τίθησιν;
Γʹ.
