On Repentance (Sermon 3) [Spurious]

On Repentance. Sermon 3.

60.705 Let us describe, beloved, the remedies of repentance, so that we may run to the harbor of salvation. We were wounded by sin; let us be healed by repentance; through sin the devil wounded; through repentance Christ healed; that one through sin laid down the roots; the Lord cut out sin by the root with the axe of repentance. For behold, he says, the axe is laid to every tree. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. The devil sowed sin like a weed; Christ with the sickle of repentance cut off the weed-like sin. Sin is an evil passion, but repentance is a good thing. Let us flee, therefore, the dreadful, and love the desirable. Through sin the devil leads to Gehenna; through repentance Christ leads by the hand to the kingdom. Have you sinned? Be calm; for it is not so dreadful to sin, but it is evil to persist in sin; for the former has a defense, but the latter brings unpardonable punishment.

Since even Peter sinned by denying, and Paul transgressed by persecuting Christ, and David, by committing adultery and murder, did things worthy of death. But although they sinned as men, yet as saints they repented; and if they unexpectedly fell into the nets of sin, yet taking away the corruption of unbelief from the eyes of their mind, they ran to repentance, so that through it they might carry off the remission of their offenses. Come, therefore, let us also run to repentance. For even if the devil burdened us with sin, yet the Lord Jesus Christ, who was born of the holy Virgin Mary, lightens us through repentance, taking upon Himself the burden of sin; For behold, he says, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. For the devil laid sin upon men; the Lord took sin away from men. That one gave sin, so that on account of sin he might destroy man; the Lord took sin, so that he might free human nature from its transgression. Before the coming of Christ the devil was dreadful, before the cross sin was unbearable; but the cross has now broken the stings of sin; the Lord Jesus, having appeared on earth, cast down the devil like lightning onto the earth; For I saw, he says, Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

The death of Christ has destroyed the kingdom of death. For even if death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one to come; but nevertheless after the death of the Lord, death has become a plaything even for infants. Wherefore we all, after the resurrection of Christ, mocking the arrogance of death, say: O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? Before the cross even the counsel of the serpent breathed death; but after the cross, after the passion of Christ, behold both old men and women, and youths and maidens, just as treaders of grapes in the winepress, so they too tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon all the power of the enemy. I have said these things to show the fall of sin, and the power of repentance. Do not, therefore, sharpen the sting of sin against yourself, let not your carelessness become a whetstone for sin. You are not condemned because you have sinned, but you are punished because having sinned you did not repent. For just as the Lord, knowing the weakness of your body, the

De paenitentia (sermo 3) [Sp.]
