On patience.

60.729 Thirsty travelers imagine in their minds the absent spring, and with a longing for it, they hurry with a swift movement, so that they may find the cure for their thirst, and cool the flame burning within with its streams. In the same way you also, beloved, thirsting for the word of truth, come with eagerness to the true spring, our Lord Jesus Christ.

For he is the one who says: If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink; and again he himself says: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Longing for this spring, the blessed David cried out, saying: As the deer longs for the springs of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. But lest we seem to remain outside the Scriptures through these introductions, come, let us take up the words; for thus the discourse will be shown to be more brilliant for us, and the Church is shown to us as radiant. But let us return to the subject at hand. What then was it that we have just heard the blessed David saying: Waiting, I waited for the Lord, and he attended to me, and heard my prayer?

A great trophy has appeared to us: patience. For indeed we find all the saints crowned with patience, and having this as an inner teacher 60.730 we know of the blessed Abraham, who became a hundred years old and had not yet begotten a child, but by his patience the fruit was harvested before his eyes. The tree lost its leaves, and the root was weighed down; the flesh grew old, and his spirit flourished; but nevertheless by patience he bore the fruit of Isaac. Behold for me the blessed Job, the champion of the world, who wrestled with and tore apart the power of the devil; how much did the devil wrestle, and did not break the athlete? He emptied the quiver of arrows, he brought forth his engines of war, and did not shake the tower; he raised up the waves, and did not sink the ship; he broke off the branches, and did not tear out the root; he stirred up the tempests, and did not move the rock. Have you seen the patience of a righteous man? Have you seen the contest of a champion? Have you seen the established rock? Have you seen the soldier drawn up for battle? Have you seen the tower standing? Have you seen the righteous man glorified and the devil fleeing with shame? Behold for me, if you please, also the crown of his patience. For after the captivity of the oxen, and the destruction of the sheep, and the fall of the house, and the disaster of his children—for he saw them born at different times, but all together undergoing the end of 60.731 life; after so great a loss, then, his wife also intervenes, saying: How long will you endure, saying, ‘Behold, I wait a little while, expecting the hope of my salvation’? for behold, your memorial has been wiped out from the earth, your sons and your daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb, for whom I toiled with hardships in vain; and you yourself sit on a dung heap of worms, spending the night in the open air, and I, a wanderer and a servant, go about from place to place and from house to house, waiting for the sun to set, that I may rest from my hardships and from the sorrows that encompass me, which now oppress me. But say some word to the Lord, and die. But he, looking at her, spoke the famous voice, sung by all: If we have received good things from the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? Have you seen a sea of patience? Have you seen an unfailing teaching?

Περὶ ὑπομονῆς.

60.729 Οἱ διψῶντες ὁδοιπόροι ἀποῦσαν τὴν πηγὴν κατὰ διάνοιαν φαντάζονται, καὶ

τῷ ἐκείνης πόθῳ ὀξεῖ τῷ κινήματι σπεύδουσιν, ὥστε τὸ ἴαμα τῆς δίψης εὑρεῖν, καὶ τὴν ἔνδον ἐκκαιομένην φλόγα διὰ τῶν ναμάτων δροσίσαι. Τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ ὑμεῖς, ἀγαπητοὶ, διψῶντες τὸν τῆς ἀληθείας λόγον, μετὰ προθυμίας ἔρχεσθε πρὸς τὴν ἀληθινὴν πηγὴν, τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν.

Αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ λέγων· Εἴ τις διψᾷ, ἐρχέσθω πρός με, καὶ πινέτω· καὶ πάλιν αὐτός φησι· Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες τὴν δικαιοσύνην. Ταύτης τῆς πηγῆς ἐπιποθῶν ὁ μακάριος ∆αυῒδ ἐκελάδει λέγων· Ὃν τρόπον ἐπιποθεῖ ἡ ἔλαφος ἐπὶ τὰς πηγὰς τῶν ὑδάτων, οὕτως ἐπιποθεῖ ἡ ψυχή μου πρὸς σὲ, ὁ Θεός. Ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ δόξωμεν ἔξω τῶν Γραφῶν μένειν διὰ τῶν προοιμίων τούτων, φέρε δὴ ἁψώμεθα τῶν λόγων· οὕτω γὰρ ἡμῖν λαμπρότερος ὁ λόγος ἀποδειχθήσεται, καὶ φαιδρὰ ἡμῖν ἡ Ἐκκλησία δείκνυται. Ἀλλ' ἐπὶ τὸ προκείμενον ἐπανέλθωμεν. Τί οὖν ἦν τὸ ἄρτι ἀκηκόαμεν τοῦ μακαρίου ∆αυῒδ λέγοντος· Ὑπομένων ὑπέμεινα τὸν Κύριον, καὶ προσέσχε μοι, καὶ εἰσήκουσε τῆς δεήσεώς μου;

Μέγα ἡμῖν ἀνεφάνη τρόπαιον ἡ ὑπομονή· καὶ γὰρ πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους εὕρομεν ἐστεμμένους τῇ ὑπομονῇ, καὶ ταύτην διδάσκαλον 60.730 ἔχοντες ἔνδον εἰδέναι τὸν μακάριον Ἀβραὰμ, τὸν ἑκατονταετῆ γενόμενον καὶ μήπω τεκνογονήσαντα, ἀλλὰ τῇ ὑπομονῇ τούτου ὁ καρπὸς πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν τετρυγημένος ἦν. Τὸ δένδρον ἀπέβαλε τὰ φύλλα, καὶ ἡ ῥίζα ἐβρίθετο· ἐπαλαιώθη ἡ σὰρξ, καὶ τὸ φρόνημα αὐτοῦ ἤκμαζεν· ἀλλ' ὅμως τῇ ὑπομονῇ ἐκαρποῦτο τὸν Ἰσαάκ. Ἰδέ μοι τὸν μακάριον Ἰὼβ τὸν τῆς οἰκουμένης ἀγωνιστὴν, τὸν παλαίσαντα καὶ διασπάσαντα τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ διαβόλου· πόσα ἐπάλαισεν ὁ διάβολος, καὶ τὸν ἀθλητὴν οὐκ ἔῤῥηξε; Τὴν φαρέτραν τῶν βελῶν ἐκένωσε, τὰ μηχανήματα προσήγαγε, καὶ τὸν πύργον οὐκ ἐσάλευσε· τὰ κύματα ἤγειρε, καὶ τὸ σκάφος οὐ κατεπόντισε· τοὺς κλάδους κατέκλασε, καὶ τὴν ῥίζαν οὐκ ἀνέσπασε· τὰς τρικυμίας ἤγειρε, καὶ τὴν πέτραν οὐκ ἐσάλευσεν. Εἶδες ὑπομονὴν δικαίου; εἶδες ἄθλησιν ἀγωνιστοῦ; εἶδες πέτραν ἐστηριγμένην; εἶδες τὸν στρατιώτην παραταττόμενον; εἶδες τὸν πύργον ἑστῶτα; εἶδες τὸν δίκαιον δοξαζόμενον καὶ διάβολον μετ' αἰσχύνης δραπετεύοντα; Ἰδέ μοι, εἰ δοκεῖ, καὶ τὴν κορωνίδα τῆς ὑπομονῆς αὐτοῦ. Μετὰ γὰρ τὴν τῶν βοῶν αἰχμαλωσίαν, καὶ τῶν προβάτων τὸν ἀφανισμὸν, καὶ τῆς οἰκίας τὴν πτῶσιν, καὶ τὴν τῶν παίδων συμφοράν εἶδε γὰρ αὐτοὺς διαφόρως μὲν τεχθέντας κατὰ τὸν χρόνον, κοινῇ δὲ ὑπελθόντας ἅπαντας τοῦ 60.731 βίου τὸ τέλος· μετὰ τοσαύτην οὖν ἀνάλωσιν ἐπεμβαίνει καὶ ἡ γυνὴ λέγουσα· Μέχρι τίνος καρτερήσεις λέγων· Ἰδοὺ ἀναμένω χρόνον μικρὸν, προσδεχόμενος τὴν ἐλπίδα τῆς σωτηρίας μου; ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἠφάνισταί σου τὸ μνημόσυνον ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς, οἱ υἱοί σου καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες σου, ἐμῆς κοιλίας ὠδῖνες καὶ πόνοι, οὓς εἰς τὸ κενὸν ἐκοπίασα μετὰ μόχθων· σὺ δὲ αὐτὸς ἐπὶ σαπρίᾳ σκωλήκων κάθησαι διανυκτερεύων αἴθριος, κἀγὼ πλανῆτις καὶ λάτρις τόπον ἐκ τόπου περιερχομένη καὶ οἰκίαν ἐξ οἰκίας, προσδεχομένη τὸν ἥλιον πότε δύσεται, ἵνα ἀναπαύσωμαι τῶν μόχθων, καὶ τῶν περιεχουσῶν με ὀδυνῶν, αἵ με νῦν συνέχουσιν. Ἀλλ' εἰπόν τι ῥῆμα εἰς Κύριον, καὶ τελεύτα. Ὁ δὲ ἐμβλέψας αὐτῇ εἶπε τὴν ἀοίδιμον καὶ παρὰ πᾶσιν ᾀδομένην φωνήν· Εἰ τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἐδεξάμεθα ἐκ χειρὸς Κυρίου, τὰ κακὰ οὐχ ὑποίσομεν; Εἶδες ὑπομονῆς πέλαγος; εἶδες διδασκαλίαν ἄπτωτον;
