On Saint Meletius of Antioch
ENCOMIASTIC HOMILY To our Father among the saints, Meletius, archbishop of Antioch the
Great, and to the zeal of those who have gathered.
50.515 1. Casting my eyes everywhere over this sacred flock, and seeing the whole city present here, I do not know whom I should call blessed first: Saint Meletius, because even after death he enjoys such great honor, or your love, because even after his passing you show such goodwill toward your shepherds. For blessed is he, because he was able to leave such affection for all of you, and blessed are you also, because having received the deposit of love, you have continued to guard it whole for the one who deposited it until now. For the fifth year has already passed since he departed to the longed-for Jesus, and as if you had seen him yesterday and the day before, so with fervent affection you have come to meet him today.
For these things he is to be emulated, because he begot such sons; and you also are to be emulated, because you have been allotted such a father. Noble and wondrous is the root, but the fruits also are worthy of this root. For just as some wondrous root, hidden in the bosom of the earth, is not itself seen, but through its fruits shows the strength of its own virtue, so indeed also the blessed Meletius, hidden in this coffin, is not himself visible to our bodily eyes, but through you, the fruits of his own grace, he shows his strength. And if we were to be silent, the festival alone and the warmth of your zeal is enough to proclaim more brilliantly than a trumpet Saint Meletius' love for his children. For thus he inflamed your mind to the love of himself, so that you are warmed even by his mere name, and stirred by his very address. For this reason I now, not simply, but intentionally and with zeal, continually weave his name into my words. And just as one who weaves a golden crown, then setting pearls in by the density of the stones, makes the diadem more brilliant, so indeed also I, weaving the crown of encomiums for his blessed head today, like a density of some pearls, interweave the repetition of his name in my speech, expecting by this to make it more desirable and more brilliant. For this is the law and such is the custom of those who love, that they embrace even the mere names of their beloved, and are warmed by their very addresses; which indeed you also have experienced in the case of this blessed man.
For when you received him at the beginning as he entered the city, each of you called his own child by his name, thinking that through the name each was bringing the saint into his own house, and mothers, passing over fathers, and grandfathers, and ancestors, gave the name of the blessed Meletius to the children who were born. For the desire of reverence conquered nature, and the children being born were henceforth desirable to their parents not only from natural affection, but also from their disposition toward that 50.516 name. For they considered the name itself to be an adornment of kinship, and a security for the household, and salvation for those who were called by it, and a consolation for their longing. And just as some sitting in darkness, when one lamp has been lit, light many lamps and each brings it into his own house; so indeed also of the name

De sancto Meletio Antiocheno
