ON THE ASCENSION Of our Lord Jesus Christ. Homily 1.
52.791 Three paradoxical wonders, unknown from the beginning of time, surpassing our very nature, have intertwined, remaining unbreakable and unshaken; for a threefold cord is not quickly broken. And these are: the birth-pangs of an unwedded mother, the resurrection after a three-day passion, the ascension of the flesh into the heavens. Time has known barren women giving birth, but not outside of marital union; it has known the dead coming back to life, but not to an unending life; it has known a prophet being taken up, but *as if* into heaven; the "as if" is secondary to the truth. For Elijah changed from place to place, but the Savior ascended to where he descended from, while many men and women were watching, until their gaze, staring upward, grew weak, with angels bearing witness to the sight, and announcing the second coming. "And behold," it says, "two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said: 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?'" and the rest. Oh, how many things the good one has worked out for salvation through wicked servants! He descended from the heavens, he ascended into the heavens, from the heavens he will come again. And how will he come? Not dissolved into another substance, but in the form of the flesh, in human shape; not, however, doing humble things, as before, not sleeping in a boat, not overcome by the weariness of thirst at a well, not sitting on the colt of a donkey, but riding on a cloud-like colt; not bringing fishermen with him, but escorted by angels; not standing at the tribunal of a judge, but himself judging the ends of the world, and having granted judicial authority to the very fishermen; 52.793 as he himself teaches, saying to his disciples: "When the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel"; and to the Jews: "But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges"; because though they were of the Jews, they did not think the things of the Jews, but preferred the passions of Christ and the marks of their kinsmen who killed the Lord.
A great wonder, a strange tribunal, to see a fisherman judging, and a Pharisee being judged, a tentmaker sitting with boldness, and a high priest being called to account with groans. For why did they slap the Master on the cheek, strike him on the head with their fists, and in the end murder the heir outside the vineyard? Why did they imprison Peter? Why did they torture Paul with forty lashes less one, five times? But the wonderful high priest Ananias ordered the attendants to strike Paul's mouth, the mouth of Paul, the mouth of grace, the mouth of truth, the plectrum of life, nobler than any trumpet, more melodious than any harmony, the instrument of Christ, the flute of the Spirit; for what seemed good to the Holy Spirit, Paul made public through his tongue; whence I think David says, from the person of Paul: "My tongue is the pen of a ready scribe." What then did Paul say to Ananias, foreseeing the judgment coming upon him? "God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall." For a whitewashed wall is a beautified tomb, an enemy on the outside, dead on the inside.
Since, therefore, there is set before us a rendering of account for the things lived, and a worldwide tribunal, demanding the working of the talents, the setting aside of the mystical marriage, the lamp-bearing of the bridal chamber, the increase of the seed, of the
