In natalem Christi diem

On the birthday of our Savior Jesus Christ, a Discourse.

56.385 I see a strange and paradoxical mystery; shepherds' voices echo in my ears, not piping a desolate (sic) melody, but singing a heavenly hymn. Angels sing, archangels chant, the Cherubim praise, the Seraphim glorify, all celebrate, seeing God on earth, and man in heaven; him who is above, below through economy, and him who is below, above through love for mankind. Today Bethlehem has imitated heaven; instead of stars, receiving angels singing hymns, and instead of the sun, containing without circumscription the Sun of Righteousness. And do not ask how; for where God wills, the order of nature is overcome. For he willed, he was able, he descended, he saved; all things work together for God. Today He who is 56.386 is born, and He who is becomes what He was not; for being God, He becomes man, without ceasing to be God. For neither by a loss of divinity did he become man, nor again by a progression from man did he become God; but being the Word, because he is impassible he became flesh, his nature remaining unchangeable. But when He was born, the Jews denied the strange birth, and the Pharisees misinterpreted the divine Scriptures, and the scribes spoke things contrary to the law. Herod sought the one who was born, not to honor him, but to destroy him. For today I have seen all things to the contrary.

For it was not hidden, according to the psalmist, from their children in another generation. For kings came, marveling at the heavenly king, how he came to earth not with angels, not archangels, not 56.387 thrones, not dominions, not powers, not authorities, but treading a strange and untrodden path, he came forth from an untilled womb, neither leaving his angels bereft of his supervision, nor by his incarnation among us abandoning his own divinity; but kings came to worship the heavenly king of glory, and soldiers to serve the commander of the host; women, him born of a woman, that he might change the sorrows of woman into joy; virgins, the child of the virgin, how the creator of milk and breasts, who makes the fountains of the breasts flow with spontaneous streams, received the nourishment of a child from a virgin mother; infants, him who became an infant, that out of the mouths of babes and sucklings he might perfect praise; children, the child who made them martyrs because of Herod's madness; men, him who became man and healed the evils of his servants; shepherds, the good shepherd, who laid down his life for the sheep; priests, him who became high priest according to the order of Melchizedek; slaves, him who took the form of a slave, that he might honor our slavery with freedom; fishermen, him who made fishers into hunters of men; tax collectors, him who from tax collectors appointed an evangelist; prostitutes, him who offered his feet to the tears of prostitutes; and to speak briefly, all sinners came to see the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, Magi attending him, shepherds blessing, tax collectors evangelizing, prostitutes bearing myrrh, a Samaritan woman thirsting for the fount of life, a Canaanite woman having unhesitating faith.

Since all are leaping for joy, I too wish to leap, I want to dance, I desire to celebrate; but I dance, not striking a lyre, not shaking a thyrsus, not holding flutes, not lighting torches, but instead of musical instruments, carrying the swaddling clothes of Christ. For these are my hope, these are my life, these are my salvation, these are my flute, these
