De animato

Concerning the animate. 95.229 Animate is said to be that which is nourished, and grows, and begets like unto itself. And this is divided into three: into an animal; and the animal has not only these three natural motions, but also that of moving from place to place; into a plant; this has only the three; into a zoophyte; the zoophyte is between the animal and the plant. For since the plant has the three, and the animal has, in addition to the three, motion from place to place, this exists in between.For it also has motion, and not from place to place, but that of contraction, if someone should touch it. The body is divided into animate and inanimate; the animate into a sentient animal and a non-sentient one; the inanimate into zoophyte and plant; the zoophyte into the fig tree; the plant into grass, shrub, tree; the animal into rational and irrational; the rational into mortal and immortal; the immortal into angel, demon; the mortal into man, ox, dog, and such things. An innovation is a thing altered contrary to the terms and laws of nature. An economy is a thing that ought not to have happened; and it happens according to the condescension and for the benefit of some. Of things that are, some are substance; others are fitness; others are activity.

Περὶ ἐμψύχου. 95.229 Ἔμψυχον λέγεται τὸ τρεφόμενον, καὶ αυξον, καὶ τίκτον ὅμοιον ἑαυτῷ. Τοῦτο δὲ διαιρεῖται εἰς τρία· εἰς ζῶον· τὸ δὲ ζῶον οὐκ εχει μόνον τὰς τρεῖς φυσικὰς ταύτας κινήσεις, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ ἐκ τόπου εἰς τόπον μεθίστασθαι· εἰς φυτόν· τοῦτο τὰς τρεῖς μόνας ἔχει· εἰς ζωόφυτον· τὸ ζωόφυτον μέσον ἐστὶ τοῦ ζώου καὶ τοῦ φυτοῦ. Τοῦ γὰρ φυτοῦ τὰς τρεῖς εχοντος, τοῦ δὲ ζώου πρὸς ταῖς τρισὶν καὶ τὴν ἐκ τόπου κίνησιν, τοῦτο μέσον ὑπάρχει.Ἔχει γὰρ καὶ αὐτὸ κίνησιν, καὶ οὐ τὴν ἀπὸ τόπου εἰς τόπον, ἀλλὰ τὴν τῆς συστολῆς, εἴ τις αὐτοῦ ἐφάψαιτο. Τὸ σῶμα διαιρεῖται εἰς ἔμψυχον καὶ ἄψυχον· τὸ ἔμψυχον εἰς αἰσθητικὸν ζῶον καὶ ἀναίσθητον· τὸ αψυχον εἰς ζωόφυτον καὶ φυτόν· τὸ ζωόφυτον εἰς συκῆν· τὸ φυτὸν εἰς πόαν, θάμνον, δένδρον· τὸ ζῶον εἰς λογικὸν καὶ ἄλογον· τὸ λογικὸν εἰς θνητὸν καὶ ἀθάνατον· τὸ ἀθάνατον εἰς αγγελον, δαίμονα· τὸ θνητὸν εἰς ἄνθρωπον, βοῦν, κύνα, καὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα. Καινοτομία ἐστὶ πρᾶγμα παρὰ τοὺς τῆς φύσεως ορους καὶ νόμους παρηλλαγμένον. Οἰκονομία ἐστὶ πρᾶγμα μὴ ὀφεῖλον γενέσθαι· γίνεται καὶ κατὰ συγκατάβασιν καὶ ὠφέλειάν τινων. Τῶν οντων τὰ μέν ἐστιν οὐσία· τὰ δὲ ἐπιτηδειό-της· τὰ δὲ ἐνέργεια.
