Annals (variant readings)
2545. after codex claromontanus: And Abraham with Sarah begot Isaac, and with Hagar, Ishmael. And Isaac with Rebekah begot Esau and Jacob, who because of the threat of Esau moved to Laban, his maternal uncle, whose daughters Leah and Rachel he also took as wives. This Jacob, therefore, begot the twelve patriarchs, that is, the twelve tribes of Israel. It should be known that after the three men were entertained by Abraham, the two arrived for the burning of Sodom, who also came to the dwelling of Lot. When the licentious Sodomites learned this, they arrived there, seeking out the strangers in order to fulfill their unlawful act. But Lot opposed them to the utmost; but being greatly pressed by them, he gave out his daughter for that foul misuse, only that such a shameful thing might not happen to the strangers. But the licentious men were not persuaded, and seeking to take the strangers by force, they fought with Lot. But the strangers, opening the doors of the gate and having only appeared to them, burned them all with fire. Lot, being astonished at what had happened, and falling on his face, besought them to learn who they were. And they said to him, "1Take all those with you, and go out of this place; for tomorrow all will be burned up, and the place will be winnowed and will vanish because of the foul licentiousness of its inhabitants."2 And having done this quickly, Lot fled to Mount Segor. And afterwards, the Lord having rained down fire, they were all burned up according to the prophecy of the angels. But Lot's wife, being a woman and not hesitating at the command of the angels, and turning to see what happened, was immediately turned to stone and became as a pillar of salt. But the daughters of Lot, thinking that the whole world had already perished and that seed would no longer be born to them, made their father drunk with wine, and he had intercourse with them, not knowing from his drunkenness what was done by him. Therefore, his uncle Abraham, having learned this from him and being grieved, sent him away to the parts of the river Nile, to fetch from there supposedly three firebrands, but in truth so that he might be devoured by wild beasts, and atone for the sin. But Lot, making haste by the providence of God, brought to Abraham three firebrands, that is, of cypress, of pine, and of cedar. And Abraham, marveling that he was saved from the beasts 255 unharmed, glorified God. And both going up with the firebrands to the mountain, Abraham planted them on a rock, apart from each other, but near, so as to form the shape of a triangle. And he commanded Lot to go and draw water from the Jordan, and to water them daily; which indeed he did. And the mountain was about 24 miles from the Jordan. And within three months the firebrands sprouted. And Lot, going down, told this to Abraham. And going up to see what had happened, they found that the three firebrands had united and become one, but the roots alone remained as they had also been planted, separate. And Abraham, seeing what had happened to the dry pieces of wood, falling down worshipped the Lord, and said, "1This wood will be the condemnation of sin."
2 And the wood became a great tree, which itself lasted until the reign of Solomon. And Abraham received full assurance concerning the forgiveness of Lot's sin. And when the temple of Jerusalem was being built, the tree itself was also cut down with the others, and having been hewn, it lay unused in the temple, this too by the providence of God. And when Christ our God was about to suffer the passion that brings salvation for the world, he was crucified on it by the Jews.
