SELECTIONS OF ORIGEN ON JOSHUA SON OF NUN. 17.36 CHAPTER Γʹ. Verse ιδʹ. And all the people departed from their tents. That is, like a filled threshing floor. For it was not only congealed, as in the Red Sea, but it was heaped up like a pile of wheat. Clearly, as a type of the apostles. CHAPTER ʹ. Verse ιεʹ, ιʹ. Shout; for the Lord has given you the city. ΩΡΙΓΕΝΟΥΣ ΕΚΛΟΓΑΙ ΕΙΣ ΙΗΣΟΥΝ ΤΟΝ ΝΑΥΗ. 17.36 ΚΕΦ. Γʹ. Στίχ. ιδʹ. Καὶ ἀπῆρε πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἐκ τῶν σκηνω μάτων αὐτῶν. Τουτέστιν, ὡς ἅλω πλήρωσις. Οὐ γὰρ μόνον ἐπήγνυτο, ὡς ἐν τῇ Ἐρυθρᾷ, ἀλλ' ὡς θημὼν πυροῦ ἐσωρεύετο. Εἰς τύπον τῶν ἀποστόλων δηλονότι. ΚΕΦ. ʹ. Στίχ. ιεʹ, ιʹ. Κεκράξατε· παρέδωκε γὰρ Κύριος ὑμῖν τὴν πόλιν. ∆ιατί τὴν Ἱεριχὼ ἀναθεματισθῆναι προσέτα- ξε; Πρώτην ταύτην εἷλον πόλιν μετὰ τὸ διαβῆναι τὸν ποταμόν. Ὥσπερ τοίνυν προσέταξεν αὐτοὺς τῶν 17.37 καρπῶν προσφέρειν τὰς ἀπαρχὰς, οὕτως ἐκέλευσε τὰ τῶν σκύλων προσενεγκεῖν ἀκροθίνια. Πρὸς δὲ τούτοις καὶ γυμνάζει αὐτοὺς διὰ τούτων τῶν νόμων, ὥστε τοὺς ἀναγκαίους νόμους τηρεῖν. Τὴν οἰκείαν δὲ αὐ-τοῖς ἐπιδεικνὺς δύναμιν, τὴν πρώτην πόλιν δίχα ὅπλων καὶ μηχανημάτων ἑλεῖν παρεσκεύασε, καὶ μόνῃ κατέλυσε τῇ τῶν σαλπίγγων ἠχῇ· ἵν' ὅταν ἡττηθῶσι παραταττόμενοι, γνῶσιν, ὡς αὐτοὶ παρέσχον τῆς ἥττης τὰς ἀφορμὰς, τῶν θείων νόμων καταφρονήσαντες. ΚΕΦ. Ηʹ. Στίχ. βʹ. Καὶ τὴν προνομὴν τῶν κτηνῶν προ νομεύσεις σεαυτῷ. Ἐπειδὴ οὐκ ἔδει ὡς ἐν τῇ Ἱεριχὼ τὰ πάντα ἀνατεθῆναι. Στίχ. κʹ. Καὶ ἐξέτεινεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν γαισὸν, καὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ. Ἔμενε γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτεταμένην ἔχων τὴν χεῖρα· ἵνα, θεασάμενοι οἱ τῆς ἐνέδρας, προκαταλάβωνται τὴν πόλιν.
