A f. 15v Franchi de' Cav. 93: So while Arius and his companions were journeying in a circuit through Palestine and Phoenicia and the rest of Syria and Cilicia and the successive regions on their way to Bithynia and the emperor (for upon arriving they were eager to inform him of what had happened, bringing the votes and testimonies from the bishops), and while they chose to visit all these places in a circuit, causing no little delay in their journey, Alexander set out from Alexandria and sailed with all speed for the Propontis and Nicomedia; where, having arrived and entered into discussions with Hosius of Corduba and his companions, he persuades them to agree with his opinion and to ratify the homoousion, winning them over with most just arguments. And he also taught about the blasphemy and malevolence of Arius, saying such things to all: «It is a terrible thing, O friends, terrible and worthy of great caution to simply entrust every opinion to our neighbors, even if some otherwise seem to be the most suitable. For honors beyond merit, you see, do not so much lead the many to benevolence toward those who honor them as they stir up insolence against them. And these things, although being of such a nature as to be unbearable, I nevertheless decided to bear. For the fact that Arius, though being utterly wicked, still seemed to be leaving for himself some room for future wickedness, made one consider it tolerable, as if he had not yet arrived at the absolute peak of his own depravity. But he will not get away with it, let him know this clearly, nor will Arius rejoice, acting so insolently against me. For he will know that even old men have the vigor for exacting justice. Therefore let him be proclaimed an outcast by all of us, and let him be a common anathema and an object of aversion, both Arius himself and all whom the common demon has caused to revolt by driving them out from this holy church.» Since the bishops at that time were divided into many opinions, it seemed good to the emperor Constantine to hold a synod of all the bishops in Nicaea and to put a stop to their wrangling with one another. 1.9azu Z. 6 ff Vita Constantini Cod. But Hosius of Corduba and Alexander and their party had prepared the document to be ready, which all were required to sign. And its text, in the very same words, is as follows: « In Nicaea, the metropolis of Bithynia, it seemed good to the victorious Constantine Augustus to hold a synod of the holy bishops of the holy, catholic, and apostolic church. We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible» and the rest that follows. «But those who say: 'There was a time when He was not,' and 'Before He was begotten, He was not,' and that 'He came into being from nothing,' or who assert that He is of another hypostasis or substance, or that the Son of God is created, or subject to change, or alteration, these the catholic and apostolic church anathematizes.» Therefore, when they had brought this document into the public assembly and were demanding that all vote for the opinion, and that each ratify it by his own signature, they confirmed it. But Arius and his followers were indeed present there, all of them together. However, they did not accept the pious faith. Wherefore the emperor issued a most pious decree as follows: that all who would not consent to the common vote of the bishops, whether they were presbyters, or deacons, or any others of the clergy, should be punished with exile. And Philumenus was the one entrusted to carry these things out, holding an office from the emperor which the Romans are accustomed to call Magister.
