And the "from the first day": either that from the first day since you believed until now I give thanks to my God for all of you, making my prayer with joy, or for your fellowship in the gospel, which has been served from the first day until now. But what follows seems rather to agree 622 with the first interpretation. For how could you give thanks from the beginning, having seen them not yet confirmed in the fellowship? "Being confident," he says, "that he who implanted such a willing and fervent beginning would himself also bring it to the perfection of a work." Phil 1,7 To think this of all. For he who has bestowed great zeal and care upon them thinks and considers his disciples to be accomplishing good and great things. Or, it is right for me to think this, I who have such a disposition towards you as not even in my bonds to forget you, but always to carry you in my heart. And what is the reason for having them in his heart and unforgotten? Because they are, he says, partakers with me of grace; either of the spiritual gift supplied to them through faith, working in them in various ways then, or simply of the grace of regeneration and adoption through baptism. Or I said I have you as partakers in my heart, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation. And "of grace" instead of "through grace"; for without divine grace no one is deemed worthy of such fellowship. Phil 1,8 In the tender mercies of Jesus Christ. As if: not with human affections, nor experiencing anything human, but being wholly disposed according to Christ Jesus. It is a great thing to be longed for by Paul; but even in his tender mercies is greater; and "in the tender mercies of Jesus Christ" leaves no room for hyperbole. Phil 1,13 So that the bonds. Or "the bonds in Christ," that is, "for Christ's sake," so that the syntax would be by hyperbaton. Or, "the bonds," he says, "which have become manifest in Christ," that is, made manifest by the good pleasure and economy of Christ; for Paul, who suffered and succeeded, was nothing, if he did not attribute it to Christ. Or, the bonds of those are manifested in Christ, who do not do anything for show, but do things in such a way that those who see are edified and glorify God in heaven. 623 Phil 1,17 Or what else, he says, if not this? As if: for what else, if not that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel? Phil 1, As always, so now. Christ was always magnified in Paul, both when he allowed him to suffer in bonds and scourgings, and when he drew him out and delivered him. For through the one the preaching was confirmed and strengthened, as those who saw Paul's bonds and afflictions reasoned that if his preaching were not something divine and entirely true, he would not have joyfully given himself over to countless evils when it was possible to stop and be released. Therefore, Christ was rightly magnified as the preaching was confirmed. And again when he drew him out and rescued him from dangers, he was magnified by that very fact. For if the grace that rescued Paul were not some divine and superhuman grace, how were the bonds loosed? How were the doors opened? How did those countless miracles happen? Christ therefore bore witness to Paul through the dangers from which he rescued him; and Paul in turn, through the trials which he endured, bore witness to the preaching; and through both Christ was magnified. So also now, he says; whether Christ delivers me from death or not, he will be magnified in me; for I, even while living, will not desist from boldness for the sake of the preaching, and if I must die, I will die with it. Whether by life. whether by life, as now snatching me from the bloodthirstiness of Nero, or by death, as later deeming me worthy to complete the martyrdom for his sake by the sword. Phil 1,24-25 And being confident of this, I know. Instead of "and this I know with confidence and without doubting." And what is it that he knows with confidence and without doubting?
