46. And who is sufficient for these things? For we are not as the many, able to corrupt104 2 Cor. ii. 16, 17. the word of truth, and mix the wine,105 Isai. i. 22. which maketh glad the heart of man,106 Ps. civ. 15. with water, mix, that is, our doctrine with what is common and cheap, and debased, and stale, and tasteless, in order to turn the adulteration to our profit, and accommodate ourselves to those who meet us, and curry favor with everyone, becoming ventriloquists107 Ventriloquists. Isai. viii. 19, “Wizards.” and chatterers, who serve their own pleasures by words uttered from the earth, and sinking into the earth, and, to gain the special good will of the multitude, injuring in the highest degree, nay, ruining ourselves, and shedding the innocent blood of simpler souls, which will be required at our hands.108 Ezek. iii. 20; xxxiii. 8.

Καὶ πρὸς ταῦτα τίς ἱκανός; Οὐ γάρ ἐσμεν ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ καπηλεύειν δυνάμενοι τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας, καὶ ἀναμιγνύναι τὸν οἶνον ὕδατι: τὸν εὐφραίνοντα καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου λόγον τῷ πολλῷ καὶ εὐώνῳ καὶ χαμαὶ συρομένῳ καὶ ἐξιτήλῳ καὶ εἰκῆ ῥέοντι, ὥστε αὐτοί τι παρακερδαίνειν ἐκ τῆς καπηλείας, ἄλλο τε ἄλλως ὁμιλοῦντες τοῖς πλησιάζουσι καὶ πᾶσι πρὸς χάριν: ἐγγαστρίμυθοί τινες ὄντες καὶ κενολόγοι, τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἡδονὰς θεραπεύοντες λόγοις ἐκ γῆς φωνουμένοις καὶ δυομένοις εἰς γῆν: ὡς ἂν μάλιστα εὐδοκιμοῖμεν παρὰ τοῖς πολλοῖς, ὅτι μάλιστα ζημιοῦντες αὐτοὺς, ἢ ἀπολλύντες, καὶ αἷμα ἀθῶον ἁπλουστέρων ψυχῶν ἐκχέοντες ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν ἡμῶν ἐκζητηθησόμενον.
