12. In his earliest years he was swathed and fashioned, in that best and purest fashioning which the Divine David speaks of as proceeding day by day,17 Ps. cxxxix. 16. in contrast with that of the night, under his great father, acknowledged in those days by Pontus, as its common teacher of virtue. Under him then, as life and reason grew and rose together, our illustrious friend was educated: not boasting of a Thessalian mountain cave, as the workshop of his virtue, nor of some braggart Centaur,18 Centaur. Alluding to Chiron, the tutor of Achilles. the tutor of the heroes of his day: nor was he taught under such tuition to shoot hares, and run down fawns, or hunt stags, or excel in war, or in breaking colts, using the same person as teacher and horse at once; nor nourished on the fabulous marrows of stags and lions, but he was trained in general education, and practised in the worship of God, and, to speak concisely, led on by elementary instructions to his future perfection. For those who are successful in life or in letters only, while deficient in the other, seem to me to differ in nothing from one-eyed men, whose loss is great, but their deformity greater, both in their own eyes, and in those of others. While those who attain eminence in both alike, and are ambidextrous, both possess perfection, and pass their life with the blessedness of heaven. This is what befell him, who had at home a model of virtue in well-doing, the very sight of which made him excellent from the first. As we see foals and calves skipping beside their mothers from their birth, so he too, running close beside his father in foal-like wantonness, without being left far behind in his lofty impulses toward virtue, or, if you will, sketching out and showing traces of the future beauty of his virtue, and drawing the outlines of perfection before the time of perfection arrived.
Τὰ μὲν δὴ πρῶτα τῆς ἡλικίας ὑπὸ τῷ μεγάλῳ πατρί, ὃν κοινὸν παιδευτὴν ἀρετῆς ὁ Πόντος τηνικαῦτα προὐβάλλετο, σπαργανοῦται καὶ διαπλάττεται πλάσιν τὴν ἀρίστην τε καὶ καθαρωτάτην, ἣν ἡμερινὴν ὁ θεῖος Δαβὶδ καλῶς ὀνομάζει καὶ τῆς νυκτερινῆς ἀντίθετον. Ὑπὸ δὴ τούτῳ, καὶ βίον καὶ λόγον συναυξανομένους τε καὶ συνανιόντας ἀλλήλοις ὁ θαυμάσιος ἐκπαιδεύεται: οὐ Θετταλικόν τι καὶ ὄρειον ἄντρον αὐχῶν ὡς ἀρετῆς ἐργαστήριον, οὐδέ τινα Κένταυρον ἀλαζόνα τῶν κατ' αὐτὸν ἡρώων διδάσκαλον: οὐδὲ πτῶκας βάλλειν ἢ κατατρέχειν νεβρῶν ἢ θηρεύειν ἐλάφους ὑπ' αὐτοῦ διδασκόμενος, ἢ τὰ πολεμικὰ κράτιστος εἶναι ἢ πωλοδαμνεῖν ἄριστα, τῷ αὐτῷ πώλῳ καὶ διδασκάλῳ χρώμενος, ἢ μυελοῖς ἐλάφων τε καὶ λεόντων τοῖς μυθικοῖς ἐκτρεφόμενος: ἀλλὰ τὴν ἐγκύκλιον παίδευσιν παιδευόμενος καὶ θεοσέβειαν ἐξασκούμενος καί, συνελόντι φάναι, πρὸς τὴν μέλλουσαν τελειότητα διὰ τῶν ἐξ ἀρχῆς μαθημάτων ἀγόμενος. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἢ βίον μόνον, ἢ λόγον κατωρθωκότες, τῷ ἑτέρῳ δὲ λείποντες, οὐδὲν τῶν ἑτεροφθάλμων, ἐμοὶ δοκεῖν, διαφέρουσιν, οἷς μεγάλη μὲν ἡ ζημία, μεῖζον δὲ τὸ αἶσχος ὁρῶσι καὶ ὁρωμένοις. Οἷς δὲ κατ' ἀμφότερα εὐδοκιμεῖν ὑπάρχει καὶ εἶναι περιδεξίοις, τούτοις καὶ τὸ εἶναι τελείοις καὶ βιοτεύειν μετὰ τῆς ἐκεῖθεν μακαριότητος. Ὅπερ οὖν ἐκείνῳ συμβέβηκεν εὖ ποιοῦν οἴκοθεν ἔχοντι τῆς ἀρετῆς τὸ παράδειγμα, πρὸς ὃ βλέπων εὐθὺς ἄριστος ἦν. Ὥσπερ τοὺς πώλους καὶ τοὺς μόσχους ὁρῶμεν ὁμοῦ τῇ γενέσει ταῖς μητράσιν ἑαυτῶν παρασκαίροντας, οὕτω καὶ αὐτὸς τῷ πατρὶ παραθέων ἐγγύθεν ἐν πωλικῷ τῷ φρυάγματι καὶ τῶν ἄκρων τῆς ἀρετῆς κινημάτων οὐ παρὰ πολὺ λειπόμενος: εἰ βούλει δέ, κἀν τῇ σκιαγραφίᾳ τὸ μέλλον τῆς ἀρετῆς κάλλος ὑποσημαίνων καὶ πρὸ τοῦ καιροῦ τῆς ἀκριβείας τὰ τῆς ἀκριβείας προχαραττόμενος.
