43. One of his devices was of the greatest service. After a period of such recollection as was possible, and private spiritual conference, in which, after considering all human arguments, and penetrating into all the deep things of the Scriptures, he drew up a sketch of pious doctrine, and by wrestling with and attacking their opposition he beat off the daring assaults of the heretics: overthrowing in hand to hand struggles by word of mouth those who came to close quarters, and striking those at a distance by arrows winged with ink, which is in no wise inferior to inscriptions on tablets; not giving directions for one small nation only like that of the Jews, concerning meats and drinks, temporary sacrifices, and purifications of the flesh;86 Heb. ix. 10. but for every nation and part of the world, concerning the Word of truth, the source of our salvation. Again, since unreasoning action and unpractical reasoning are alike ineffectual, he added to his reasoning the succour which comes from action; he paid visits, sent messages, gave interviews, instructed, reproved, rebuked,87 2 Tim. iv. 2. threatened, reproached, undertook the defence of nations, cities and individuals, devising every kind of succour, and procuring from every source specifics for disease: a second Bezaleel, an architect of the Divine tabernacle,88 Exod. xxxi. 2. applying every material and art to the work, and combining all in a harmonious and surpassing beauty.
Ἓν μὲν οὖν ἐκεῖνο ἐπινοεῖ καὶ λίαν σωτήριον. Συναγαγὼν ἑαυτόν, ὡς οἷόν τε ἦν, καὶ συγκλείσας τῷ Πνεύματι, καὶ πάντας μὲν ἀνθρωπίνους λογισμοὺς κινήσας, πᾶν δὲ τῶν γραφῶν βάθος ἀναλεξάμενος, λογογραφεῖ τὴν εὐσέβειαν καὶ ἀντιθέτοις πάλαις καὶ μάχαις τὸ πολὺ τῶν αἱρετικῶν ἀποκρούεται θράσος: τοὺς μὲν καὶ εἰς χεῖρας ἰόντας, ἀγχεμάχοις ὅπλοις τοῖς ἀπὸ γλώσσης καταστρεφόμενος: τοὺς δὲ πόρρωθεν, βάλλων τοξεύμασι τοῖς ἐκ μέλανος, οὐδὲν ἀτιμοτέρου τῶν ἐν ταῖς πλαξὶ χαραγμάτων: οὐδὲ ἑνὶ τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἔθνει, καὶ μικρῷ τούτῳ, νομοθετοῦντος περὶ βρωμάτων καὶ πωμάτων καὶ προσκαίρων θυσιῶν καὶ σαρκὸς καθαρσίων: ἀλλὰ παντὶ γένει καὶ μέρει τῆς οἰκουμένης, περὶ τοῦ λόγου τῆς ἀληθείας, ἐξ οὗ καὶ τὸ σώζεσθαι περιγίνεται. Δεύτερον δέ: καὶ γὰρ ὁμοίως ἀτελὲς ἄλογος πρᾶξις καὶ λόγος ἄπρακτος, προσετίθει τῷ λόγῳ καὶ τὴν ἐκ τοῦ πράττειν ἐπικουρίαν: τοῖς μὲν ἐπιδημῶν, πρὸς δὲ τοὺς πρεσβεύων, τοὺς δὲ καλῶν, νουθετῶν, ἐλέγχων, ἐπιτιμῶν, ἀπειλῶν, ὀνειδίζων, προπολεμῶν ἐθνῶν, πόλεων, τῶν καθ' ἕκαστον, πᾶν εἶδος ἐπινοῶν σωτηρίας, πανταχόθεν ἰώμενος: ὁ Βεσελεὴλ ἐκεῖνος ὁ τῆς θείας ἀρχιτέκτων σκηνῆς, πάσῃ πρὸς τὸ ἔργον ὕλῃ καὶ τέχνῃ χρώμενος, καὶ πάντα πλέκων εἰς κάλλους ἑνὸς περιουσίαν καὶ ἁρμονίαν.
