46.  Furious indeed were his first acts of wantonness, more furious still his final efforts against us.  What shall I speak of first?  Exiles, banishments, confiscations, open and secret plots, persuasion, where time allowed, violence, where persuasion was impossible.  Those who clung to the orthodox faith, as we did, were extruded from their churches; others were intruded, who agreed with the Imperial soul-destroying doctrines, and begged for testimonials of impiety, and subscribed to statements still harder than these.  Burnings93    Burnings, a.d. 370.  Eighty ecclesiastics, sent on a mission to Valens at Nicomedia, were by his orders sent to sea off the coast of Bithynia, and, the vessel being set on fire, were burnt to death. of Presbyters at sea, impious generals, not those who conquered the Persians, or subdued the Scythians, or reduced any other barbaric nation, but those who assailed churches, and danced in triumph upon altars, and defiled the unbloody sacrifices with the blood of man and victims, and offered insult to the modesty of virgins.  With what object?  The extrusion of the Patriarch Jacob,94    Jacob, i.e., Athanasius.  Esau = George. and the intrusion in his place of Esau, who was hated,95    Rom. ix. 11. even before his birth.  This is the description of his first acts of wantonness, the mere recollection and mention of which even now, rouses the tears of most of us.

Καὶ δὴ λαμπρὰ μὲν αὐτοῦ τὰ πρῶτα νεανιεύματα, λαμπρότερα δὲ τὰ τελευταῖα καθ' ἡμῶν ἀγωνίσματα. Τίνα δὴ λέγω τὰ πρῶτα; Ἐξορίαι, φυγαί, δημεύσεις, ἐπιβουλαὶ φανεραί τε καὶ ἀφανεῖς: τὸ πείθειν, οὗ καιρὸς ἦν: τὸ βιάζεσθαι, τοῦ πείθειν οὐκ ὄντος. Οἱ μὲν ἐξωθούμενοι τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν, ὅσοι τοῦ ὀρθοῦ λόγου καὶ τοῦ καθ' ἡμᾶς: οἱ δὲ εἰσαγόμενοι, ὅσοι τῆς βασιλικῆς ἀπωλείας ἐτύγχανον, οἱ τὰ χειρόγραφα τῆς ἀσεβείας ἀπαιτοῦντες, οἱ γράφοντες τὰ τούτων ἔτι χαλεπώτερα. Πρεσβυτέρων ἐμπρησμοὶ θαλάττιοι: στρατηγοὶ δυσσεβεῖς, οὐ Περσῶν κρατοῦντες, οὐ Σκύθας χειρούμενοι, οὐκ ἄλλο τι βαρβαρικὸν ἔθνος ἀνακαθαίροντες: ἀλλ' ἐκκλησίαις ἐπιστρατεύοντες καὶ θυσιαστηρίων κατορχούμενοι καὶ τὰς ἀναιμάκτους θυσίας ἀνθρώπων καὶ θυσιῶν αἵμασι χραίνοντες καὶ παρθένων αἰδῶ καθυβρίζοντες. Ἵνα τί γένηται; Ἵν' ἐξωσθῇ μὲν Ἰακὼβ ὁ πατριάρχης, ἀντεισαχθῇ δὲ Ἠσαῦ, ὁ μεμισημένος καὶ πρὸ γενέσεως. Ταῦτα τῶν πρώτων αὐτοῦ νεανιευμάτων τὰ διηγήματα, ἃ καὶ μέχρι τοῦ νῦν κινεῖ τοῖς πολλοῖς δάκρυον εἰς μνήμην ἰόντα καὶ ἀκουόμενα.
