45. He, on hearing the salutation addressed to Elisabeth, leaped with joy in his mother’s womb, recognising God the Word conceived in the womb of the Virgin. Thereafter he came forward preaching in the wilderness, proclaiming the baptism of repentance to the people, (and thus) announcing prophetically salvation to the nations living in the wilderness of the world. After this, at the Jordan, seeing the Saviour with his own eye, he points Him out, and says, “Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!”101 John i. 29. He also first preached to those in Hades,102 It was a common opinion among the Greeks, that the Baptist was Christ’s forerunner also among the dead. See Leo Allatius, De libris Eccles. Græcorum, p. 303. becoming a forerunner there when he was put to death by Herod, that there too he might intimate that the Saviour would descend to ransom the souls of the saints from the hand of death.
[45] οὗτος ”ἀκούσας τὸν ἀσπασμὸν τῆς Μαρίας ἐσκίρτησεν ἐν κοιλίᾳ μητρὸς ἀγγαλλιώμενος”, ἐνορῶν τὸν ἐν κοιλίᾳ παρθένου συνειλημμένον θεοῦ λόγον. ἔπειτα „κηρύσσων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ„ παρεγένετο τὸ ”βάπτισμα μετανοίας” τῷ λαῷ καταγγέλλων, προμηνύων σωτηρίαν τοῖς ἐν ἐρημίᾳ κόσμου πολιτευομένοις ἔθνεσιν: μετὰ ταῦτα ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ αὐτοψεὶ μηνύων ἐπιδεικνύει τὸν σωτῆρα τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ λέγει: „ἰδοὺ ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου.„ οὗτος προέφθασε καὶ τοῖς ἐν ᾅδῃ προευαγγελίσασθαι, ἀναιρεθεὶς ὑπὸ Ἡρώδου: πρόδρομος γενόμενος ἐκεῖ, σημαίνων μέλλειν κἀκεῖσε κατελεύσεσθαι τὸν σωτῆρα, λυτρούμενον τὰς τῶν ἁγίων ψυχὰς ἐκ χειρὸς τοῦ θανάτου.
