56. He then, having gathered to himself the unbelieving everywhere throughout the world, comes at their call to persecute the saints, their enemies and antagonists, as the apostle and evangelist says: “There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: and there was a widow in that city, who came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her.”129 Luke xviii. 2–5.
[56] οὗτος οὖν ἐπισυνάξας πρὸς ἑαυτὸν τὸν πάντοτε ἀπειθῆ θεῷ λαὸν γεγενημένον, ἄρχεται παρακαλούμενος ὑπ' αὐτῶν διώκειν τοὺς ἁγίους ὡς ἐχθροὺς καὶ ἀντιδίκους αὐτῶν ὑπάρχοντας, καθώς φησιν ὁ εὐαγγελιστής: „κριτής τις ἦν ἔν τινι πόλει τὸν θεὸν μὴ φοβούμενος καὶ ἄνθρωπον μὴ ἐντρεπόμενος. χήρα δέ τις ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ, ἣ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν λέγουσα: ἐκδίκησόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου μου. ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἤθελεν ἐπὶ χρόνον: ὕστερον μέντοι εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ λέγων: εἰ καὶ τὸν θεὸν οὐ φοβοῦμαι καὶ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐντρέπομαι, διὰ δὲ τὸ παρενοχλεῖν μοι τὴν χήραν ταύτην ἐκδικήσω αὐτήν.„
