Τοῦ ἁγίου Ἀθανασίου ἀρχιεπισκόπου Ἀλεξανδρείας ἀπολογία πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Κωνστάντιον.

 1 Ἐκ πολλῶν ἐτῶν ὄντα σε Χριστιανόν, καὶ ἐκ προγόνων φιλόθεον ἐπιστάμενος, εὐθύμως τὰ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ νῦν ἀπολογοῦμαι· τοῖς γὰρ τοῦ μακαρίου Παύλου λόγοι

 2 Περὶ δὲ τῆς διαβολῆς τῆς κατ' ἐμοῦ γενομένης παρὰ τῇ σῇ φιλανθρωπίᾳ διὰ τὸν εὐσεβέστατον Αὔγουστον καὶ μακαρίας μνήμης καὶ αἰωνίου Κώνσταντα τὸν ἀδε

 3 Αἰσχύνομαι μὲν οὖν ἀληθῶς καὶ ἀπολογούμενος περὶ τοιούτων, περὶ ὧν οὐδὲ αὐτὸν οἶμαι τὸν κατήγορον ἔτι παρόντων ἡμῶν μνημονεύσειν. Οἶδε γὰρ ἀκριβῶς ὅ

 4 Ἐξελθὼν ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀλεξανδρείας, οὐκ εἰς τὸ στρατόπεδον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, οὐδὲ πρὸς ἄλλους τινὰς ἢ μόνον εἰς τὴν Ῥώμην ἀνῆλθον. καὶ τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ τὰ κατ'

 5 Ποῖον τοίνυν τόπον, ἢ τίνα χρόνον φησὶν ὁ κατήγορος, ἐν ᾧ τοιαῦτά με εἰρηκέναι διέβαλεν; ἢ τίνος παρόντος ἐμάνην φθέγξασθαι τοιαῦτα οἷα ὡς εἰπόντος

 6 Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἑτέρας διαβολῆς, εἰ ἔγραψα τῷ τυράννῳ (τοὔνομα γὰρ οὐδὲ λέγειν βούλομαι), παρακαλῶ, ὡς θέλεις καὶ δι' ὧν ἂν δοκιμάσῃς, ἐξέταζε καὶ ἀνάκρ

 7 Ἄρ' οὐχὶ καὶ τὸ μόνον ὑποπτεύειν περὶ τούτων τὸν κατήγορον ἐστὶ μανικόν; Τί γάρ με πάλιν θαρρεῖν ἔπειθεν αὐτῷ; Ποίαν αὐτοῦ διάθεσιν ἔβλεπον ἀσφαλῆ;

 8 Τοιούτῳ με φίλον ὁ διαβαλὼν ἐνόμισε γεγενῆσθαι· ἢ τάχα οὐδὲ νενόμικεν, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐχθρὸς ἀπιθάνως ἐπλάσατο· οἶδε γὰρ ἀκριβῶς, ὅτι κατεψεύσατο. Ἐβουλόμη

 9 Ἐγὼ μὲν οὖν, ἐπὶ τούτῳ ξενιζόμενος, ὅσα χρὴ λέγειν ἀπολογούμενον ἀπορῶ· καὶ μόνον ἐμαυτοῦ μυρίους καταψηφίζομαι θανάτους, ἐὰν καὶ ὅλως κἂν ὑποψία τι

 10 Τοῦτο οὖν δεδιὼς φρονοῦντας ἐκείνους, καὶ οὐ μᾶλλον ηὐχόμην περὶ τῆς σῆς φιλανθρωπίας; καὶ τὸν μὲν φονεύσαντα ἐκεῖνον ἠγάπων, εἰς σὲ δέ, τὸν ἀδελφὸ

 11 Ὅτι μὲν οὖν μήτε ἔγραψά ποτε ἐκείνῳ, μήτε ἐδεξάμην ποτὲ παρ' αὐτοῦ, μάρτυρα τὸν Θεὸν καὶ τὸν τούτου Λόγον τὸν μονογενῆ αὐτοῦ Υἱὸν τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰ

 12 Εἰ μὲν οὖν παρ' ἄλλοις ἤμην διαβληθείς, τὴν σὴν εὐσέβειαν ἐπεκαλούμην ὡς ὁ Ἀπόστολος ἐπεκαλέσατο τότε τὸν Καίσαρα καὶ πέπαυται τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡ κατ' αὐ

 13 ∆ιὰ ταῦτα πάντα τὰ πανταχοῦ τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τετάρακται. Καὶ προφάσεις μὲν ἐπενόησαν, ἐπίσκοποι δὲ τηλικοῦτοι καὶ πολυετεῖς ἐξωρίσθησαν, διὰ τὴν πρὸς

 14 Ἐπειδὴ δὲ καὶ περὶ τῆς μεγάλης ἐκκλησίας κατειρήκασιν, ὡς δὴ συνάξεως ἐκεῖ γενομένης πρὶν αὐτὴν τελειωθῆναι· φέρε καὶ περὶ τούτου πάλιν ἀπολογήσομα

 15 Πίστευε γὰρ, βασιλεῦ, καὶ περὶ τούτου πάλιν μάρτυρα δέξαι τὴν ἀλήθειαν· ὅτι ἐν ταῖς συνάξεσι τῆς Τεσσαρακοστῆς, διὰ τὸ τῶν τόπων στενὸν καὶ τὸ πολὺ

 16 Ἐγὼ δὲ τὸν κατειπόντα πάλιν περὶ τούτου ἐρωτῆσαι βούλομαι, ποῦ νόμιμον ἦν εὔχεσθαι τὸν λαὸν, ἐν ἐρήμοις, ἢ ἐν οἰκοδομουμένῳ τόπῳ τῆς εὐχῆς; Ποῦ πρέ

 17 Τὴν γοῦν ἑτέραν καὶ ὑπολειπομένην ἀντιλογίαν αὐτοῦ βούλομαι προλαβεῖν. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ κατειρηκώς φησιν· Οὔπω τετελείωτο τὸ ἔργον, καὶ οὐκ ἐχρῆν εὐχὰς γε

 18 Ἐγὼ μὲν οὖν καὶ ταῦτα πρὸς τὸν κατειπόντα ἀποδύρομαι· σὺ δέ, θεοφιλέστατε Αὔγουστε, ζήσειας πολλαῖς ἐτῶν περιόδοις καὶ τὰ ἐγκαίνια ἐπιτελέσειας. Αἱ

 19 ∆ὸς δὴ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην ἴδωμεν διαβολήν, καὶ συγχώρησον ἀπολογήσασθαι καὶ περὶ αὐτῆς. Τετολμήκασι γὰρ καὶ τοῦτο διαβάλλειν, ὡς ἀντιστάντος ἐμοῦ τοῖς σ

 20 Πόθεν δὲ ἆρα καὶ ταύτην τὴν ἐπιστολὴν εὗρον οἱ κατειρηκότες; ἐβουλόμην παρ' αὐτῶν ἀκοῦσαι, τίς αὐτοῖς καὶ ταύτην ἐπιδέδωκε. Ποίησον αὐτοὺς ἀποκρίνα

 21 ∆ιὰ τοῦτο τοίνυν κἀγώ, ἐπειδὴ ἐκ διαβολῆς ἦν ἡ ἐπιστολὴ καὶ οὐκ εἶχεν οὐδὲ τοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρόσταξιν, ἔγνων, ὅτι προαίρεσις οὐκ ἦν τῆς σῆς εὐσεβείας ἐλθ

 22 Μοντάνου τοίνυν ἀποδημήσαντος, ἦλθε ∆ιογένης ὁ νοτάριος μετὰ ἓξ καὶ εἴκοσι μῆνας· καὶ οὔτε αὐτὸς ἐπιστολὴν ἀπεδίδου, οὔτε ἑωράκαμεν ἀλλήλους, οὔτε

 23 Ἀντίγραφον ἐπιστολῆς οὕτως ἔχον· Κωνστάντιος Νικητὴς Αὔγουστος Ἀθανασίῳ. Εὔχεσθαί με ἀεὶ ὥστε πάντα αἴσια ἀποβαίνειν τῷ ποτε ἀδελφῷ ἐμῷ Κωνστάντι,

 24 Περὶ ταύτης, ἐκεῖνοι μὲν καὶ τοῖς δικασταῖς εἰρήκασιν· ἐγὼ δὲ ταύτην τὴν ἐπιστολὴν ἔχων, ἆρ' οὐκ εἰκότως ἀπῄτουν γράμματα, καὶ οὐ προσεῖχον προφάσε

 25 Πάντες δὲ ἠξίουν γράμματα δειχθῆναι τῆς σῆς εὐσεβείας. Καὶ φάσις μὲν γὰρ μόνη παρὰ βασιλέως τὴν αὐτὴν ἔχει δύναμιν τοῖς γραφομένοις, ὅταν μάλιστα τ

 26 Τί τοίνυν οὕτως ἐβουλεύοντο, ἢ διὰ τί μετὰ δόλου ἐνεδρεύειν ἐπεχείρουν, ἐξὸν καὶ κελεῦσαι καὶ γράψαι; Βασιλέως γὰρ πρόσταξις μεγάλην ἔχει παρρησίαν

 27 Ταῦτα συνορῶν, οὐ κατεγίνωσκον ἐμαυτοῦ, ἀλλὰ καὶ ταύτην ἔχων τὴν ἀπολογίαν, ἠπειγόμην πρὸς τὴν σὴν εὐσέβειαν, εἰδὼς τὴν σὴν φιλανθρωπίαν, διὰ μνήμη

 28 Τὰ δὲ ἄλλα τὰ γενόμενα ἴσως μὲν ἄπιστα νομισθήσεται, καὶ πάντας ἐκπλήξει διὰ τὴν ὑπερβολὴν τοῦ μύσους. Ἀναγκαῖον δὲ ὅμως εἰπεῖν, ἵνα ἡ σὴ φιλόχριστ

 29 Τοιούτων οὖν ὄντων τῶν θρυλουμένων, καὶ τῶν πραγμάτων ἄνω καὶ κάτω πάντων ἀνατετραμμένων, ὅμως οὐκ ἀπέστην ἐγὼ τῆς προθυμίας, ἀλλὰ πάλιν εἰχόμην τῆ

 32 Ταῦτα ἀκούων ἐγὼ καὶ σχεδὸν βλέπων ἀφ' ὧν οἱ ἀπαγγέλλοντες ὠδύροντο, ὁμολογῶ, πάλιν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ὑπέστρεψα, τοῦτο λογισάμενος ὅπερ καὶ ἡ σὴ θεοσέ

 33 Ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ Υἱὸς ὁ Κύριος καὶ Σωτὴρ ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, ἄνθρωπος γενόμενος δι' ἡμᾶς, καὶ καταργήσας τὸν θάνατον, ἐλευθερώσας τε τὸ γένος ἡμῶν ἀπὸ τ

 34 Τοιούτων δὲ πάλιν καὶ τοσούτων γενομένων παρὰ τῶν Ἀρειανῶν, οὐκ ἐσφάλην ἄρα πεισθεὶς τῇ θείᾳ Γραφῇ λεγούσῃ· «Ἀλλ' ἀποκρύβηθι μικρὸν ὅσον ὅσον, ἕως

 35 Οὐκοῦν βέλτιον γέγονε τὸ κρυβῆναι, καὶ τοῦτον ἐκδέξασθαι τὸν καιρόν. Ναὶ οἶδα ὅτι καὶ σύ, γινώσκων τὰς θείας Γραφάς, ἐπινεύεις καὶ ἀποδέχῃ με τοῦτο

32. He defends his Flight.

Hearing, nay almost seeing, these things, through the mournful representations of the messengers, I confess I turned back again into the desert, justly concluding, as your Piety will perceive, that if I was sought after, that I might be sent as soon as I was discovered to the Prefects94    Supr. §29., I should be prevented from ever coming to your Grace; and that if those who would not subscribe against me, suffered so severely as they did, and the laity who refused to communicate with the Arians were ordered for death, there was no doubt at all but that ten thousand new modes of destruction would be devised by the calumniators against me; and that after my death, they would employ against whomsoever they wished to injure, whatever means they chose, venting their lies against us the more boldly, for that then there would no longer be any one left who could expose them. I fled, not because I feared your Piety (for I know your long-suffering and goodness), but because from what had taken place, I perceived the spirit of my enemies, and considered that they would make use of all possible means to accomplish my destruction, from fear that they would be brought to answer for what they had done contrary to the intentions of your Excellency. For observe, your Grace commanded that the Bishops should be expelled only out of the cities and the province. But these worthy persons presumed to exceed your commands, and banished aged men and Bishops venerable for their years into desert and unfrequented and frightful places, beyond the boundaries of three provinces95    Egypt was divided into three Provinces till Hadrian’s time, Egypt, Libya, and Pentapolis; Hadrian made them four; Epiphanius speaks of them as seven. Some of them were sent off from Libya to the great Oasis; others from the Thebais to Ammoniaca in Libya96    Hist. Ar. 72.. Neither was it from fear of death that I fled; let none of them condemn me as guilty of cowardice; but because it is the injunction of our Saviour97    Vid. Apol. de Fug. init.; Matt. x. 23. that we should flee when we are persecuted, and hide ourselves when we are sought after, and not expose ourselves to certain dangers, nor by appearing before our persecutors inflame still more their rage against us. For to give one’s self up to one’s enemies to be murdered, is the same thing as to murder one’s self; but to flee, as our Saviour has enjoined, is to know our time, and to manifest a real concern for our persecutors, lest if they proceed to the shedding of blood, they become guilty of the transgression of the law, ‘Thou shalt not kill98    Exod. xx. 13..’ And yet these men by their calumnies against me, earnestly wish that I should suffer death. What they have again lately done proves that this is their desire and murderous intention. You will be astonished, I am sure, Augustus, most beloved of God, when you hear it; it is indeed an outrage worthy of amazement. What it is, I pray you briefly to hear.

32 Ταῦτα ἀκούων ἐγὼ καὶ σχεδὸν βλέπων ἀφ' ὧν οἱ ἀπαγγέλλοντες ὠδύροντο, ὁμολογῶ, πάλιν εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ὑπέστρεψα, τοῦτο λογισάμενος ὅπερ καὶ ἡ σὴ θεοσέβεια συνορᾷ· ὅτι, εἰ ζητούμεθα, ἵνα εὑρεθέντες παραπεμφθῶμεν πρὸς τοὺς ἐπάρχους, κώλυσίς ἐστι τοῦ μὴ παρὰ τὴν σὴν φιλανθρωπίαν ἐλθεῖν. Καὶ εἰ οἱ μὴ θελήσαντες ὑπογράψαι καθ' ἡμῶν, τοιαῦτα καὶ τοσαῦτα πεπόνθασιν, οἵ τε μὴ θέλοντες τῶν λαϊκῶν κοινωνεῖν τοῖς Ἀρειανοῖς ἐκελεύσθησαν ἀποθνῄσκειν· οὐκ ἀμφίβολον, ὅτι πάντως ἐπινοηθήσονται παρὰ τῶν συκοφαντῶν καινότεροι καὶ μυρίοι θάνατοι κατ' ἐμοῦ· καὶ μετὰ θάνατον κινήσουσι λοιπὸν οἷς βούλονται καὶ ἃ βούλονται πράγματα οἱ ἐχθροί, ψευδόμενοι καθ' ἡμῶν μειζόνως, ὡς μηκέτι ἔχοντες τοὺς ἐλέγχοντας αὐτούς. Οὐ γὰρ τὴν σὴν εὐσέβειαν δεδιὼς ἔφευγον (οἶδα γάρ σου τὴν ἀνεξικακίαν καὶ τὴν φιλανθρωπίαν), ἀλλ' ὁρῶν ἐκ τῶν γινομένων τὸν θυμὸν τῶν ἐχθρῶν, καὶ λογιζόμενος ὅτι φοβούμενοι μήποτε ἐλεγχθῶσιν ἐφ' οἷς ἔπραξαν παρὰ γνώμην τῆς σῆς καλοκἀγαθίας, πάντα πράξουσιν ὥστε καὶ ἀποκτεῖναι. Ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἡ μὲν σὴ φιλανθρωπία μόνον ἔξω τῶν πόλεων καὶ τῆς ἐπαρχίας προσέταξεν ἐκβάλλεσθαι τοὺς ἐπισκόπους· οἱ δὲ θαυμαστοὶ πλέον τι τῆς σῆς προστάξεως τολμῶντες, ὑπὲρ τρεῖς ἐπαρχίας εἰς ἐρήμους καὶ ἀήθεις καὶ φοβεροὺς τόπους ἐξώρισαν γέροντας ἀνθρώπους καὶ πολυετεῖς ἐπισκόπους. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἀπὸ τῆς Λιβύης εἰς τὴν μεγάλην Ὄασιν, οἱ δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς Θηβαΐδος εἰς τὴν Ἀμμωνιακὴν τῆς Λιβύης ἀπεστάλησαν. Καὶ οὐ δεδιὼς πάλιν ἀποθανεῖν, ἔφυγον· μὴ δειλίας μου τίς αὐτῶν καταγινωσκέτω· ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ τοῦ Σωτῆρός ἐστι παράγγελμα, διωκομένους μὲν ἡμᾶς φεύγειν, ζητουμένους δὲ κρύπτεσθαι, καὶ μὴ εἰς προὖπτον κίνδυνον ἑαυτοὺς ἐκδιδόναι, μηδὲ φαινομένους πλέον ἐκκαίειν τὸν θυμὸν τῶν διωκόντων. Ἴσον γάρ ἐστι τὸ φονεύειν ἑαυτὸν καὶ διδόναι πάλιν ἑαυτὸν τοῖς ἐχθροῖς εἰς τὸ φονεύειν. Τὸ δὲ φεύγειν, ὡς παρήγγειλεν ὁ Σωτήρ, γινώσκειν ἐστὶ τὸν καιρὸν καὶ ἀληθῶς κήδεσθαι τῶν διωκόντων, ἵνα μὴ καὶ μέχρις αἵματος φθάσαντες ὑπεύθυνοι γένωνται τῷ «Μὴ φονεύσῃς»· καὶ τὰ μάλιστα καὶ τὸ παθεῖν οἱ ἡμᾶς διαβάλλοντες βούλονται. Ἃ γὰρ καὶ νῦν πάλιν πεποιήκασι, δείκνυσιν αὐτῶν ταύτην εἶναι τὴν σπουδὴν καὶ μιαιφόνον τὴν προαίρεσιν. Ἀκούσας δέ, εὖ οἶδ' ὅτι, θεοφιλέστατε Αὔγουστε, θαυμάσεις· καὶ γὰρ ἄξιον ἀληθῶς ἐκπλήξεως τὸ τόλμημα. Ἡλίκον δ' ἐστὶ τοῦτο, ἄκουσον ἐν βραχεῖ λόγῳ.
