Section XXXII.

[27] 2143    Mark xi. 15a; John iii. 1.And they came to Jerusalem.  And there was there a man of the Pharisees, [28] named Nicodemus, ruler of the Jews.  2144    John iii. 2.This man came unto Jesus by night, and said unto him, My Master, we know that thou hast been sent from God as a teacher; and no man can do these signs that thou doest, except him whom God is [29] with.  2145    John iii. 3.Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, If a man [30] be not born a second time, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  2146    John iii. 4.Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man who is old be born? can he, think you, return again to [31] his mother’s womb a second time, to enter and be born?  2147    John iii. 5.Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, If a man be not born of water and the Spirit, [32] he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  2148    John iii. 6.For he that is born of flesh is flesh; and he that [33] is born of Spirit is spirit.  2149    John iii. 7.Wonder not that I said unto thee that ye must be born a [34] [Arabic, p. 124] second time.  2150    John iii. 8.The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest its voice, but thou knowest not from what place it cometh, nor whither it goeth:  so [35] is every man that is born of the Spirit.  2151    John iii. 9.Nicodemus answered and said unto him, [36] How can that be?  2152    John iii. 10.Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou teaching2153    Or the teacher of. Rec.  2164    John iii. 19.This is the judgement, that the light came into the world, and men loved the darkness more than the light; because their deeds [46] were evil.  2165    John iii. 20.Whosoever doeth evil deeds hateth the light, and cometh not to the [47] light, lest his deeds be reproved.  2166    John iii. 21.But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be known, that they have been done in God.

Ioan. III, 1. Erat autem ibi homo ex Pharisaeis, Nicodemus nomine, princeps Iudaeorum.

2. Hic venit ad Iesum nocte, et dixit ei: Praeceptor, nos scimus, quia a Deo missus es magister, nemo enim potest haec signa facere, quae facis, nisi is, cum quo sit Deus.

3. Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Amen, amen dico tibi: Nisi quis natus fuerit denuo, non potest videre regnum Dei.

4. Dixit ad eum Nicodemus: Quomodo potest nasci homo senex ? numquid potest

in ventrem matris suae iterato introire, et renasci ?

5. Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Amen, amen dico tibi: Nisi quis natus fuerit ex aqua et spiritu, non potest introire in regnum Dei.

6. Quod natum est ex carne, caro est, et quod natum est ex spiritu, spiritus est.

7. Non mireris, quia dixi tibi: Oportet vos nasci denuo.

8. Ventus, ubi vult, spirat, et vocem eius audis, sed nescis, unde veniat, et quo vadat: sic est omnis, qui natus est ex spiritu.

9. Respondit Nicodemus, et dixit ei: Quomodo possunt haec fieri?

10. Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Tues magister Israel, et haec ignoras?

11. Amen, amen dico tibi'. Quia, quod scimus, loquimur, et quod vidimus, testamur, et testimonium nostrum non accipitis.

12. Si terrena dixi vobis, et non creditis: quomodo, si dixero vobis caelestia, credetis ?

13. Et nemo ascendit in caelum, nisi qui descendit de caelo, Filius hominis, qui est in caelo.

14. Et sicut Moyses exaltavit serpentem in deserto, ita futurum est, ut exaltetur Filius hominis,

15. ut omnis, qui credit in ipsum, non pereat, sed habeat vitam aeternam.

16. Sic Deus dilexit mundum, ut Filium suum unigenitum daret, ut omnis, qui credit in eum, non pereat, sed habeat vitam aeternam.

17. Non misit Deus Filium suum in mundum, ut iudicet mundum, sed ut salvetur mundus per ipsum.

18. Qui credit in eum, non iudicatur, qui autem non credit, iam iudicatus est, quia non credit in nomine unigeniti Filii Dei.

19. Hoc est iudicium; Lux venit in mundum, et dilexerunt homines magis tenebras, quam lucem: quia mala erant eorum opera.

20. Omnis, qui turpitudines operatur, odit lucem, et non venit ad lucem, ut non arguantur opera eius:

21. qui autem operatur veritatem, venit ad lucem, ut cognoscantur opera eius, quia in Deo sunt facta.
