Section XXXV.

[1] 2315    John vii. 37.And on the great day, which is the last of the feast, Jesus stood, crying out and [2] saying, If any man is thirsty, let him come unto me, and drink.  2316    John vii. 38.Every one that believeth in me, as the scriptures said, there shall flow from his belly rivers of pure [3] water.  2317    John vii. 39.He said that referring to the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive:  for the Spirit was not yet granted; and because Jesus had not yet been [4] [Arabic, p. 133] glorified.  2318    John vii. 40.And many of the multitude that heard his words said, This is [5] in truth the prophet.  2319    John vii. 41.And others said, This is the Messiah.  But others [6] said, Can it be that the Messiah will come from Galilee?  2320    John vii. 42.Hath not the scripture said that from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village of David, the [7] Messiah cometh?  2321    John vii. 43.And there occurred a dissension in the multitude because of him.  [8] 2322    John vii. 44.And some of them were wishing to seize him; but no man laid a hand upon him.

[9] 2323    John vii. 45.And those officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees:  and the priests said [10] unto them, Why did ye not bring him?  2324    John vii. 46.The officers said, Never spake man thus [11] as speaketh this man.  2325    John vii. 47.The Pharisees said unto them, Perhaps ye also have gone [12, 13] astray?  2326    John vii. 48.Hath any of the rulers or the Pharisees haply believed in him? 2327    John vii. 49.except [14] this people which knows not the law; they are accursed.  2328    John vii. 50.Nicodemus, one of them, [15] he that had come to Jesus by night, 2329    John vii. 51.said unto them, Doth our law haply condemn [16] a man, except it hear him first and know what he hath done?  2330    John vii. 52.They answered and said unto him, Art thou also haply from Galilee?  Search, and see that a prophet riseth not from Galilee.

[17, 18] 2331    Matt. xxii. 41.And when the Pharisees assembled, Jesus asked them, and said, 2332    Matt. xxii. 42.What say ye of [19] the Messiah? whose son is he?  They said unto him, The son of David.  2333    Matt. xxii. 43.He said unto them, And how doth David in the Holy Spirit call him Lord? for he said,

[20] 2334    Matt. xxii. 44.The Lord said unto my Lord,

Sit on my right hand,

That I may put thine enemies under thy feet.

[21, 22] 2335    Matt. xxii. 45.If then David calleth him Lord, how is he his son?  2336    Matt. xxii. 46.And no one was able to answer him; and no man dared from that day again to ask him of anything.

[23] 2337    John viii. 12.And Jesus addressed them again, and said, I am the light of the world; and he that [24] followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall find the light of life.  2338    John viii. 13.The Pharisees [Arabic, p. 134] said unto him, Thou bearest witness to thyself; thy witness is not true.  2339    John viii. 14.Jesus [25] answered and said unto them, If I bear witness to myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I came, or [26, 27] whither I go.  2340    John viii. 15.And ye judge after the flesh; and I judge no man.  2341    John viii. 16.And even if I judge, my judgement is true; because I am not alone, but I and my Father which [28, 29] sent me.  2342    John viii. 17.And in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.  2343    John viii. 18.I am he that beareth witness to myself, and my Father which sent me beareth witness to [30] me.  2344    John viii. 19.They said unto him, Where is thy Father?  Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye know not me, nor my Father:  for did ye know me, ye would know my [31] Father.  2345    John viii. 20.He said these sayings in the treasury, where he was teaching in the [32] temple:  2346    John viii. 21.and no man seized him; because his hour had not yet come.  Jesus said unto them again, I go truly, and ye shall seek me and not find me, and ye shall die [33] in your sins:  and where I go, ye cannot come.  2347    John viii. 22.The Jews said, Will he haply kill [34] himself, that he saith, Where I go, ye cannot come?  2348    John viii. 23.He said unto them, Ye are from below; and I am from above:  ye are of this world; and I am not of this [35] world.  2349    John viii. 24.I said unto you, that ye shall die in your sins:  if ye believe not that I am [36] he, ye shall die in your sins.  2350    John viii. 25.The Jews said, And thou, who art thou?  Jesus said [37] unto them, If I should begin to speak unto you, 2351    John viii. 26.I have concerning you many words and judgement:  but he that sent me is true; and I, what I heard from him is what [38, 39] I say in the world.  2352    John viii. 27.And they knew not that he meant by that the Father.  2353    John viii. 28.Jesus [Arabic, p. 135] said unto them again, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am he:  and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father [40] taught me, so I speak.  2354    John viii. 29.And he that sent me is with me; and my Father hath not [41] left me alone; because I do what is pleasing to him at all times.  2355    John viii. 30.And while he was saying that, many believed in him.

[42] 2356    John viii. 31.And Jesus said to those Jews that believed in him, If ye abide in my words, truly [43] ye are my disciples; 2357    John viii. 32.and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.  [44] 2358    John viii. 33.They said unto him, We are the seed of Abraham, and have never served any man [45] in the way of slavery:  how then sayest thou, Ye shall be free children?  2359    John viii. 34.Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that doeth a sin is a slave of [46] sin.  2360    John viii. 35.And the slave doth not remain for ever in the house; but the son remaineth [47, 48] for ever.  2361    John viii. 37.And if the Son set you free, truly ye shall be free children.  I know that ye are the seed of Abraham; but ye seek to slay me, because ye are unable for my [49] word.  2362    John viii. 38.And what I saw with my Father, I say:  and what ye saw with your father, [50] ye do.  2363    John viii. 39.They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham.  Jesus said unto them, If ye were the children of Abraham, ye would do the deeds of Abraham.  [51] 2364    John viii. 40.Now, behold, ye seek to kill me, a man that speak2365    Lit. speaketh, according to Arabic idiom. with you2366    Borg. ms. omits with you. the truth, that I [52] heard from God:  this did Abraham not do.  2367    John viii. 41.And ye do the deeds of your father.  They said unto him, We were not born of fornication;2368    Borg. ms. has an adulteress, mistaking the less common Arabic word for a clerical error. we have one Father, who is [53] God.  2369    John viii. 42.Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me:  I proceeded and came2370    Different words are used in the Arabic; so in the Greek, but not in the Peshitta.  Sin. and Cur. are wanting. from God; and it was not of my own self that I came,2371    Different words are used in the Arabic; so in the Greek, but not in the Peshitta.  Sin. and Cur. are wanting. but he sent [54] [Arabic, p. 136] me.  2372    John viii. 43.Why then do ye not know my word?  Because ye cannot hear my word.  [55] 2373    John viii. 44.Ye are from the father, the devil,2374    Lit. backbiter. and the lust of your father do ye desire to do, who from the beginning is a slayer of men, and in the truth standeth not, because the truth is not in him.  And when he speaketh untruth, he speaketh from [56] himself:  for he is a liar, and the father of untruth.  2375    John viii. 45.And I who speak the truth, ye [57] believe me not.  2376    John viii. 46.Who of you rebuketh me for a sin?  And if I speak the truth, ye [58] do not believe me.2377    This is probably simply a clerical error for the ordinary reading, why have ye not believed me?  The Arabic words why and not having the same consonants, one of them was purposely or accidentally omitted by a copyist.  2378    John viii. 47.Whosoever is of God heareth the words of God:  therefore do [59] ye not hear, because ye are not of God.  2379    John viii. 48.The Jews answered and said unto him, [60] Did we not say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast demons?  2380    John viii. 49.Jesus said unto them, As for me, I have not a devil; but my Father do I honour, and ye dishonour [61] me.  2381    John viii. 50.I seek not my glory:  here is one who seeketh and judgeth.

37. In novissimo autem die magno festivitatis stabat Iesus, clamans et dicens: Si quis sitit, veniat ad me, et bibat.

38. Omnis, qui credit in me, sicut dicunt Scripturae, flumina de ventre eius fluent aquae suavis.

39. Hoc dixit, innuens ad spiritum, quem accepturi erant credentes in eum, nondum enim erat Spiritus datus, quia Iesus nondum erat glorificatus.

40. Et ex turba multi, qui audierunt sermones eius, dixerunt: Hic est vere Propheta.

41. Et alii dicebant: Hic est Messias. Alii autem dicebant: Numquid a Galilaea veniet Messias?

42. Nonne Scriptura dicit: Quia ex progenie David, et de Bethlehem, castello David, veniet Messias?

43. Dissensio itaque facta est in turba propter eum.

44. Quidam autem ex ipsis volebant apprehendere eum, et nemo misit super eum manum.

45. Et venerunt milites ad principes Sacerdotum et Pharisaeos; et dixerunt illis Sacerdotes: Quare non adduxistis eum?

46. Dixerunt milites: Numquam sic locutus est homo, sicut loquitur hic homo.

47. Dixerunt eis Pharisaei: Numquid et vos seducti estis?

48. Numquid ex principibus aliquis, aut ex Pharisaeis, credidit in eum ?

49. praeter hanc turbam, quae ignorat legem, qui maledicti sunt?

50. Dixit eis Nicodemus, unus ex ipsis, qui venit ad Iesum nocte:

51. Numquid lex nostra iudicat hominem, nisi prius audierit ab ipso, et cognoverit, quid faciat?

52. Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Numquid et tu ex Galilaea? Scrutare, et vide, quia a Galilaea propheta non surgit.

Matth. XXII, 41. Congregatis autem Pharisaeis, interrogavit eos Iesus,

42. dicens: Quid dicitis de Messia? cuius filius est ? Dixerunt ei: filius David.

43. Ait illis: Quomodo ergo David in Spiritu sancto vocat eum Dominum ? Ait enim:

44. Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, ut ponam inimicos tuos sub pedibus tuis.

45. Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius eius est?

46. Et nemo potuit ei respondere; neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum de re aliqua interrogare.

Ioan. VIII, 12. Et iterum Iesus locutus est eis, dicens: Ego sum lux mundi: qui ergo sequitur me, non ambulat in tenebris, sed inveniet lumen vitae.

13. Dixerunt ei Pharisaei: Tu de te ipso testimonium perhibes: testimonium tuum non est authenticum.

14. Respondit Iesus, et dixit eis: Si ego testimonium perhibeo de meipso, authenticum est testimonium meum, quia scio, unde veni, et quo vado: vos autem nescitis, unde veni, neque quo vado.

15. Vos enim iudicium materiale iudicatis: ego autem non iudico quemquam:

16. et si iudico, iudicium meum authenticum est, quia solus non sum, sed ego et qui misit me, Pater meus.

17. Et in lege vestra scriptum est: Quia duorum hominum testimonium authenticum est.

18. Ego sum, qui testimonium perhibeo de meipso, et testimonium perhibet de me, qui misit me, Pater meus.

19. Dixerunt ei: Ubi est Pater tuus? Respondit Iesus, et ait illis: Me non cognoscitis, neque Patrem meum: etenim si me sciretis, Patrem meum sciretis.

20. Haec verba locutus est in gazophylacio, dum doceret in templo; et nemo apprehendit eum, quia necdum venerat hora cius.

21. Dixit iterum eis Iesus: Ego profecto vado, et quaeretis me, et non me invenietis, et in peccatis vestris moriemini. Et quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire.

22. Dixerunt Iudaei: Numquid interficiet semetipsum, ut dicat: Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire?

23. Ait illis: Vos de deorsum estis: ego vero de sursum sum. Vos de mundo hoc estis: ego autem non sum de hoc mundo.

24. Dixi vobis: Quia moriemini in peccatis vestris: si non credideritis, quia ego sum, moriemini in peccatis vestris.

25. Dixerunt Iudaei: Et tu quis es? Dixit eis Iesus: Incepi loqui vobis,

26. et multa habeo de vobis loqui, et iudicare, sed qui me misit, verax est; et ego, quae audivi ab eo, haec loquor in mundo.

27. Et non intellexerunt, quod in hoc significaret Patrem.

28. Dixit iterum eis Iesus: Cum exaltaveritis Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetis, quia ego sum, et a meipso facio nihil, sed sicut docuit me Pater, ita loquor:

29. et qui me misit, mecum est, Pater enim meus non reliquit me solum, quia ego, quae placita sunt ei, facio semper.

30. Haec illo loquente, multi crediderunt in eum.

31. Et dixit Iesus ad Iudaeos illos, qui crediderunt in eum: Si permanseritis in sermone meo, vere discipuli mei eritis,

32. et cognoscetis veritatem, et veritas liberabit vos.

33. Dixerunt ei: Progenies Abrahae sumus, et nemini servivimus unquam tanquam mancipia : quomodo ergo dicis: filii liberi eritis?

34. Dixit eis Iesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: Omnis, qui facit peccatum, servus est peccati:

35. servus autem non manet in domo in aeternum : filius vero manet in aeternum :

36. si ergo vos Filius liberaverit, vere filii liberi eritis.

37. Ego scio, quia progenies Abrahae estis, sed quaeritis me interficere, quia impares estis verbo meo.

38. Ego enim, quod vidi apud Patrem meum, loquor, et vos, quod vidistis apud patrem vestrum, facitis.

39. Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Pater noster Abraham est. Dixit ei Iesus: Si filii Abrahae essetis, opera Abrahae faceretis.

40. Nunc, ecce, quaeritis me interficere, hominem, qui veritatem vobiscum

locutus est, quam audivi a Deo : hoc Abraham non fecit.

41. Vos autem facitis opera patris vestri. Dixerunt ei: Nos ex fornicatione non sumus: unum patrem habemus, qui est Deus.

42. Dixit eis Iesus: Si Deus pater vester esset, diligeretis utique me. Ego ex Deo processi, et descendi, neque a meipso veni, sed ille me misit.

43. Quare enim verbum meum non cognoscitis ? quia non potestis audire sermonem meum.

44. Vos ex patre diabolo estis, et desiderium patris vestri vultis facere, qui homicida est ab initio, et in veritate non manet, quia non est veritas in eo : et cum loquitur mendacium, ex propriis loquitur, quia mendax est et pater mendacii.

45. Et ego, qui in veritate loquor, non creditis mihi.

46. Quis ex vobis arguet me de peccato ? Et si veritatem dico, vos non creditis mihi.

47. Qui ex Deo est, verba Dei audit. Propterea vos non auditis, quia ex Deo non estis.

48. Responderunt Iudaei, et dixerunt ei: Nonne bene diximus, quia Samaritanus es, et daemonium habes?

49. Ait illis Iesus: Ego profecto daemonium non habeo, sed honorifico Patrem meum, et vos inhonorastis me.

50. Ego non quaero gloriam meam*, est hic qui quaerat, et iudicet.
