Section XXXVIII.

[3] 2525    John xi. 19.and many of the Jews came unto Mary and Martha, to comfort their heart [4] because of their brother.  2526    John xi. 20.And Martha, when she heard that Jesus had come, went [5] out to meet him:  but Mary was sitting in the house.  2527    John xi. 21.Martha then said unto Jesus, [6] My Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.  2528    John xi. 22.But I know now that, [7] whatever thou shalt ask of God, he will give thee.  2529    John xi. 23.Jesus said unto her, Thy brother shall [8] rise.  2530    John xi. 24.Martha said unto him, I know that he shall rise in the resurrection at the last day.  [9] 2531    John xi. 25.Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life:  whosoever believeth in [10] [Arabic, p. 144] me, even though he die, he shall live:  2532    John xi. 26.and every living one that believeth [11] in me shall never die.  Believest thou this?  2533    John xi. 27.She said unto him, Yea, my Lord:  I believe that thou art the Messiah, the Son of God, that cometh into the [12] world.  2534    John xi. 28.And when she had said that, she went and called Mary her sister secretly, [13] and said unto her, Our Master hath come, and summoneth thee.  2535    John xi. 29.And Mary, when [14] she heard, rose in haste, and came unto him.  2536    John xi. 30.(And Jesus then had not come into [15] the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.)  2537    John xi. 31.And the Jews also that were with her in the house, to comfort her, when they saw that Mary rose up and went out in haste, went after her, because they supposed that she was going to the [16] tomb to weep.  2538    John xi. 32.And Mary, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell at his feet, and said unto him, If thou hadst been here, my Lord, my brother had [17] not died.  2539    John xi. 33.And Jesus came; and when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were [18] with her weeping, he was troubled2540    This is the Syriac word (cf. the versions, and below, § 44, 44; see also Ibn-at-Tayyib’s Commentary, ad loc). in himself, and sighed; and he said, 2541    John xi. 34.In what [19] place have ye laid him?  And they said unto him, Our Lord, come and see.  2542    John xi. 35.And [20] the tears of Jesus came.2543    So in Syriac versions.  2544    John xi. 36.The Jews therefore said, See the greatness of his love for [21] him!  2545    John xi. 37.But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that [22] blind man, have caused that this man also should not die?  2546    John xi. 38.And Jesus came to the place of burial, being troubled within himself.  And the place of burial was a cave, [23] and a stone was placed at its door.  2547    John xi. 39.Jesus therefore said, Take these stones away.  Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said unto him, My Lord, he hath come to [24] stink for some time:  he hath been2548    Borg. ms. omits some time:  he hath been. four days dead.  2549    John xi. 40.Jesus said unto her, Did not I say [25] [Arabic, p. 145] unto thee, If thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?  2550    John xi. 41.And they removed those stones.  And Jesus lifted his eyes on high, and said, My Father, [26] I thank thee since thou didst hear me.  2551    John xi. 42.And I know that thou at all times hearest me:  but I say this unto thee because of this multitude that is standing, that they [27] may believe that thou didst send me.  2552    John xi. 43.And when he had said that, he cried with a [28] loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.  2553    John xi. 44.And that dead man came out, having his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped in a scarf.  Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

[29] 2554    John xi. 45.And many of the Jews which came unto Mary, when they saw the deed of Jesus, [30] believed in him.  2555    John xi. 46.But some of them went to the Pharisees, and informed them of all that Jesus did.

[31] 2556    John xi. 47.And the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered, and said, What shall we do? [32] for lo, this man doeth many signs.  2557    John xi. 48.And if we leave him thus, all men will believe [33] in him:  and the Romans will come and take our country and people.  2558    John xi. 49.And one of them, who was called Caiaphas, the chief priest he was in that year, said unto them, [34] 2559    John xi. 50.Ye know not anything, nor consider that it is more advantageous for us that one [35] man should die instead of the people, and not that the whole people perish.  2560    John xi. 51.And this he said not of himself:  but because he was the chief priest of2561    So both mss.; but the Vat. ms. had originally a reading equivalent to the text above with of omitted. that year, he [36] prophesied that Jesus was to die instead of the people; 2562    John xi. 52.and not instead of the people alone, but that he might gather the scattered children of God together.  [37] 2563    John xi. 53.And from that day they considered how to kill him.

[38] [Arabic, p. 146] 2564    John xi. 54.And Jesus did not walk openly amongst the Jews, but departed thence to a place near the wilderness, to a town2565    The Arabic word as printed (following Vat. ms.) means a place for monks to live in, but we should certainly restore a diacritical point over the last letter, and thus obtain another Syriac loan-word (that used here in the Peshitta), meaning town.  See also Ibn-at-Tayyib’s Commentary, ad loc. called Ephraim; and he was there, going [39] about with his disciples.  2566    John xi. 55.And the passover of the Jews was near:  and many went [40] up from the villages unto Jerusalem before the feast, to purify themselves.  2567    John xi. 56.And they sought for Jesus, and said one to another in the temple, What think ye of his [41] holding back from the feast?  2568    John xi. 57.And the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew in what place he was, he should reveal it to them, that they might take him.

24. Dixit ei Martha: Ego scio, quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.

25. Dixit ei Iesus: Ego sum resurrectio et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet;

26. et omnis vivens, credens in me, non morietur in aeternum. Credis hoc ?

27. Ait illi: Utique, Domine, ego credo, quia tu es Messias filius Dei, qui in mundum venisti.

28. Et cum haec dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam secreto, dixitque illi: Magister venit, et vocat te.

29. Maria autem, ut audivit, surrexit cito, et venit ad eum;

30. nondum enim venerat Iesus in castellum, sed erat illo in loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.

31. Iudaei etiam, qui erant cum ea in domo, ut consolarentur illam, cum vidissent Mariam cito surgentem, et egredientem, secuti sunt eam, putantes, ipsam ituram ad monumentum, ut ploraret.

32. Maria ergo, cum venisset, ubi erat Iesus, et vidisset eum, cecidit ad pedes eius, et dixit ci: Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.

33. Et venit Iesus, et ut vidit eam plorantem, et Iudaeos, qui erant cum ea,

plorantes, continuit semetipsum, et suspiravit,

34. et dixit: Ubi posuistis eum? Dixerunt ei: Domine, veni, et vide.

35. Et effusae sunt lacrymae Iesu.

36. Dixerunt ergo Iudaei: Videte quantum amabat eum.

37. Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt: Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos illius caeci, facere, ut et hic non moreretur?

38. Iesus ergo continens semetipsum, venit ad monumentum; monumentum autem erat spelunca, et lapis positus erat ad ostium illius.

39. Ait Iesus: Tollite hunc lapidem. Dixit ei Martha soror eius, qui mortuus fuerat: Domine, iam foetet, quatriduanus est enim.

40. Dixit ei Iesus: Nonne dixi tibi: Si credis, videbis gloriam Dei?

41. Removerunt ergo lapidem illum; et Iesus, elevatis sursum oculis, dixit: Pater mi, gratias ago tibi, quoniam audisti me.

42. Ego quidem scio, quia semper me audis, sed propter hanc turbam, quae adstat, hoc tibi dixi, ut credant, quia tu me misisti.

43. Haec cura dixisset, voce magna clamavit: Lazare, veni foras.

44. Et prodiit ille mortuus, ligatus pedes et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat involuta. Dixit ei Iesus: Solvite eum, et sinite abire.

45. Multi autem ex Iudaeis, qui venerant ad Mariam, ut viderunt factum a Iesu, crediderunt in eum.

46. Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad Pharisaeos, et narraverunt eis omnia, quae fecit Iesus.

47. Et congregati sunt principes Sacerdotum et Pharisaei, et dixerunt: Quid facimus, quia hic homo, ecce, multa signa facit ?

48. Si enim dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum, et venient Romani, et tollent regionem nostram et gentem.

49. Unus autem ex ipsis, Caiphas nomine, qui erat Pontifex anni illius, dixit eis: Vos nescitis quidquam,

50. neque cogitatis, quia expedit nobis, ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.

51. Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit; sed, cum esset Pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Iesus moriturus erat pro populo ',

52. et non tantum pro populo, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret simul.

53. Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt interficere eum.

54. Iesus itaque non palam ambulabat inter Iudaeos, sed abiit inde in regionem iuxta desertum, in cellulam, quae dicitur Ephraem; et ibi frequenter ibat cum discipulis suis.

55. Proximum autem erat pascha Iudaeorum; et ascenderunt multi Ierosolymam de castellis ante festum, ut purificarent se ipsos.

56. Et quaerebant Iesum, et colloquebantur ad invicem in templo: Quid putatis de tarditate eius ad festum? Praeceperant autem principes Sacerdotum et Pharisaei, ut, si quis cognoverit, ubi esset, revelaret eis, ut apprehenderent illum.

Luc. IX, 51. Et dum completi essent dies ascensionis eius, paravit semetipsum, ut iret in Ierusalem.

52. Et misit nuntios ante se; et euntes intraverunt in pagum Samariae, ut pararent illi.

53. Et non receperunt eum, quia ipse paratus erat ire in Ierusalem.

54. Et cum vidissent discipuli eius Iacobus et Ioannes, dixerunt ei: Domine, vis, dicimus, ut ignis descendat de caelo, et exterminet eos, sicut et Elias fecit?

55. Et conversus Iesus increpavit illos, dicens: Nescitis cuius spiritus estis.

56. Profecto Filius hominis non venit animas perdere, sed salvare. Et abierunt in aliud castellum.
