Section XLIV.

[11] 2959    John xiii. 1.And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knew that the hour was arrived for his departure from this world unto his Father; and he loved his own in this world, [12] and to the last he loved them.  2960    John xiii. 2.And at the time of the feast, Satan put into the [13] heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to deliver him up.  2961    John xiii. 3.And Jesus, because he knew that the Father had delivered into his hands everything, and that he came [14] forth from the Father, and goeth unto God, 2962    John xiii. 4.rose from supper, and laid aside his [15] garments; 2963    John xiii. 5.and took a towel, and girded his waist, and poured water into a bason, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith [16] his waist was girded.  2964    John xiii. 6.And when he came to Simon Cephas, Simon said unto [17] him, Dost thou, my Lord, wash for me my feet?  2965    John xiii. 7.Jesus answered and said unto [18] him, What I do, now thou knowest not; but afterwards thou shalt learn.  2966    John xiii. 8.Simon said unto him, Thou shalt never wash for me my feet.  Jesus said unto him, If I [19] wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.  2967    John xiii. 9.Simon Cephas said unto him, Then, my [20] Lord, wash not for me my feet alone, but my hands also and my head.  2968    John xiii. 10.Jesus said unto him, He that batheth2969    The Arabic word means swimmeth.  The Syriac versions have is bathed, which Borg. ms. misreads bathed, and Vat. ms. (followed by Ciasca) corrupts into batheth, rendering it swimmeth. needeth not to wash save his feet, whereas his whole [21] body is clean:  and ye also are clean, but not all of you.  2970    John xiii. 11.For Jesus knew him that should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

6. Et cum venisset ad Simonem Cepham, dixit ei Simon: Tu, Domine, lavas mihi pedes ?

7. Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Quod ego facio modo, tu nescis: scies autem postea.

8. Dixit ei Simon: Non lavabis mihi pedes in aeternum. Ait illi Iesus: Si non lavero te, non habebis partem mecum.

9. Dixit ei Simon Cephas: Ergo, Domine, non tantum lava pedes meos, sed et manus, et caput.

10. Dixit ei Iesus: Qui lotus est, non indiget nisi ut pedes lavet, cum sit mundus totus. Et vos mundi estis, sed non omnes.

11. Sciebat enim Iesus, quisnam esset traditor eius; propterea dixit: Non estis mundi omnes.

12. Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum, accepit vestimenta sua, et sedens dixit eis: Scitis, quid fecerim vobis?

13. Vos vocatis me Magistrum et Dominum ; et bene dicitis: ita sum.

14. Si ergo ego lavi pedes vestros, Dominus et Magister vester, quanto magis aequum est, ut alter vestrum alterius lavet pedes?

15. Hoc enim exemplum dedi vobis, ut, quemadmodum feci vobis, ita et vos faciatis.

16. Amen, amen dico vobis. Non est servus maior domino suo, neque apostolus maior est eo, qui misit illum.

17. Si haec scitis, beati eritis, si feceritis ea.

18. Non omnibus vobis est hic sermo meus*, ego enim scio, quos elegerim, sed ut adimpleatur Scriptura: Qui manducat mecum panem, levabit contra me calcaneum suum,

19. Amodo dico vobis, priusquam fiat, ut, cum factum fuerit, credatis, quia ego sum.

20. Amen, amen dico vobis: Qui accipit quem misero, me accipit: qui autem me accipit, accipit eum, qui me misit.

Luc. XXII, 27. Quis maior est, qui recumbit, an qui ministrat? nonne, qui recumbit? Ego in medio vestrum sum, sicut qui ministrat.

28. Vos autem estis, qui permansistis mecum in tentationibus meis:
