[17] 3733    John xx. 24.But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Thama, was not there with the disciples [18] when Jesus came.  3734    John xx. 25.The disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen our Lord.  But he said unto them, If I do not see in his hands the places of the nails, and put on them my fingers, and pass my hand over his side, I will not believe.

[19] 3735    John xx. 26.And after eight days, on the next First-day, the disciples were assembled again within, and Thomas with them.  And Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood [20] [Arabic, p. 206] in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be with you.  3736    John xx. 27.And he said to Thomas, Bring hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and bring hither [21] thy hand, and spread it on my side:  and be not unbelieving, but believing.  3737    John xx. 28.Thomas [22] answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.  3738    John xx. 29.Jesus said unto him, Now since thou hast seen me, thou hast believed:  blessed are they that have not seen me, and have believed.

[23] 3739    John xx. 30.And many other signs did Jesus before his disciples, and they are they which [24] are not written in this book:  3740    John xx. 31.but these that3741    cf. Peshitta. are written also are that ye may believe in Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God; and that when ye have believed, ye may have in his name eternal life.

[25] 3742    John xxi. 1.And after that, Jesus shewed himself again to his disciples at the sea of Tiberias; [26] and he shewed himself unto them thus.  3743    John xxi. 2.And there were together Simon Cephas, and Thomas which was called Twin,3744    Apparently the Vat. ms. means to translate the word.  The Borg. ms. retains Tama, as both mss. did in § 37, 61. and Nathanael who was of Cana of Galilee, [27] and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of the disciples.  3745    John xxi. 3.Simon Cephas said unto them, I go to catch fish.  They said unto him, And we also come with thee.  And they went forth, and went up into the boat; and in that night they caught nothing.  [28] 3746    John xxi. 4.And when the morning arrived, Jesus stood on the shore of the sea:  but the disciples [29] knew not that it was Jesus.  3747    John xxi. 5.And Jesus said unto them, Children, have ye anything [30] to eat?  They said unto him, No.  3748    John xxi. 6.He said unto them, Cast your net from the right side of the boat, and ye shall find.3749    So Peshitta.  Vat. ms. has a form that might possibly be a corruption of take.  And they threw, and they were not able [31] to draw the net for the abundance of the fish that were come3750    Or, were taken. into it.  3751    John xxi. 7.And that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Cephas, This is our Lord.  And Simon, when he heard that it was our Lord, took his tunic, and girded it on his waist (for he was [32] naked), and cast himself into the sea to come to Jesus.  3752    John xxi. 8.But some others of the disciples came in the boat3753    Vat. ms. adds unto Jesus. (and they were not far from the land, but about two [33] [Arabic, p. 207] hundred cubits), and drew that net of fish.  3754    John xxi. 9.And when they went up on the [34] land, they saw live coals laid, and fish laid thereon, and bread.  3755    John xxi. 10.And Jesus [35] said unto them, Bring of this fish which ye have now caught.  3756    John xxi. 11.Simon Cephas therefore went up, and dragged the net to the land, full of great fish, a hundred and fifty-three [36] fishes:  and with all this weight that net was not rent.  3757    John xxi. 12.And Jesus said unto them, Come and sit down.  And no man of the disciples dared to ask him who he was, for they knew that it was our Lord.  But he did not appear to them in his own [37, 38] form.  3758    John xxi. 13.And Jesus came, and took bread and fish, and gave unto them.  3759    John xxi. 14.This is the third time that Jesus appeared to his disciples, when he had risen from among the dead.

[39] 3760    John xxi. 15.And when they had breakfasted, Jesus said to Simon Cephas, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me more than these?  He said unto him, Yea, my Lord; thou [40] knowest that I love thee.  3761    John xxi. 16.Jesus said unto him, Feed for me my lambs.  He said unto him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me?  He said unto him, Yea, my Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.  He said unto him, Feed for [41] me my sheep.3762    Lit. rams.  3763    John xxi. 17.He said unto him again the third time, Simon, son of Jonah, lovest thou me?  And it grieved Cephas that he said unto him three times, Lovest thou me?  He said unto him, My Lord, thou knowest everything; thou knowest that I [42] love thee.  3764    John xxi. 18.Jesus said unto him, Feed for me my sheep.3765    Lit. ewes.  For the three words cf. Peshitta and Sinaitic.  Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast a child, thou didst gird thy waist for thyself, and go whither [Arabic, p. 208] thou wouldest:  but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch out thy hands, and another shall gird thy waist, and take thee whither thou wouldest not.  [43] 3766    John xxi. 19.He said that to him to explain by what death he was to glorify God.  And when he [44] had said that, he said unto him, Come after me.  3767    John xxi. 20.And Simon Cephas turned, and saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following him; he which at the supper leaned3768    cf. § 45, 3, note. on [45] Jesus’ breast, and said, My Lord, who is it that betrayeth thee?  3769    John xxi. 21.When therefore Cephas saw him, he said to Jesus, My Lord, and this man, what shall be in his [46] case?3770    Lit. of him.  3771    John xxi. 22.Jesus said unto him, If I will that this man remain until I come, what is [47] that to thee? follow thou me.  3772    John xxi. 23.And this word spread among the brethren, that that disciple should not die:  but Jesus said not that he should not die; but, If I will that this man remain until I come, what is that to thee?

[48] 3773    John xxi. 24.This is the disciple which bare witness of that, and wrote it:  and we know that his witness is true.

27. Et dixit Thaumae: Infer digitum tuum huc, et vide manus meas, et extende manum tuam, et admove ad latus meum, et noli esse incredulus, sed fidelis.

28. Respondit Thauma, et dixit ei: Dominus meus et Deus meus.

29. Dixit ei Iesus: Nunc quia vidisti me, credidisti: beati, qui non viderunt et crediderunt.

30. Et multa alia signa fecit Iesus in conspectu discipulorum suorum, quae non sunt scripta in libro hoc.

31. Haec autem et scripta sunt, ut credatis in Iesum Messiam Filium Dei, et ut,

credentes, vitam aeternam habeatis in nomine eius.

XXI, 1. Et post haec manifestavit se iterum Iesus discipulis suis ad mare Tiberiadis. Manifestavit autem se illis sic:

2. Erant simul Simon Cephas, et Thauma, qui dicitur Thoma, et Nathanael, qui erat a Qatna Galilaeae, et filii Zebedaei, et alii ex discipulis duo.

3. Dixit eis Simon Cephas: Vado piscari pisces. Dixerunt ei: Venimus et nos tecum. Et exierunt et ascenderunt in navim ; et illa nocte nihil prendiderunt.

4. Mane autem facto, stetit Iesus in littore maris; discipuli autem nesciebant, quia Iesus esset.

5. Dixit ergo eis Iesus: Pueri, habetis aliquid, quod manducetur? Dixerunt ei: Non.

6. Dixit eis: Mittite in dexteram navigii rete vestrum, et invenietis. Miserunt ergo; et non valebant trahere rete prae multitudine piscium, qui venerant in eam.

7. Dixit autem discipulus ille, quem diligebat Iesus, Cephae : Dominus noster est iste. Et Simon cum audisset, quia Dominus noster esset, sumsit tunicam, et praecinxit eam ad lumbos, erat enim nudus, et misit se in mare, ut veniret ad Iesum.

8. Alii autem discipuli navigio venerunt, non enim longe erant a terra, nisi circiter cubitis ducentis, trahentes rete piscium.

9. Ut autem ascenderunt in terram, viderunt prunas positas, et piscem superpositum, et panem.

10. Dixit eis Iesus: Afferte de istis piscibus, quos prendidistis nunc.

11. Ascendit ergo Simon Cephas, et traxit rete in terram, plenum magnis piscibus centum quinquaginta tribus. Et tanto pondere, non est scissum rete.

12. Dixit eis Iesus: Venite, discumbite. Et nemo audebat ex discipulis interrogare, quis esset: scientes, quia Dominus noster esset. Sed non apparuit eis in sua specie.

13. Et accessit Iesus, et accepit panem et piscem, et dedit eis.

14. Hoc iam tertio manifestatus est Iesus discipulis suis, cum resurrexisset a mortuis.

15. Cura ergo prandissent, dixit Iesus Simoni Cephae: Simon, fili Iona, diligis me plus his? Dixit ei: Etiam, Domine: tu scis, quia amo te. Dixit ei Iesus: Pasce mihi agnos meos.

16. Dixit ei et iterum: Simon, fili Iona, diligis me? Ait illi: Etiam, Domine: tu scis, quia amo te. Dixit ei : Pasce mihi hircos meos.

17. Dixit ei et tertio: Simon, fili Iona, amas me? Et aegre ferens Cephas, quia dixit tertio: Amas me? ait illi: Domine, tu omnia cognoscis: tu scis, quia ego amo te. Dixit ei Iesus : Pasce mihi oves meas.

18. Amen, amen dico tibi: Cum esses iuvenis, cingebas te, et ambulabas, ubi volebas: cum autem senueris, extendes manus tuas, et alius te cinget, et ducet, quo tu non vis.

19. Hoc dixit ei, ut significaret, qua

morte clarificaturus esset Deum. Et cum hoc dixisset, ait illi: Veni post me.

20. Conversus autem Simon Cephas, vidit illum discipulum, quem diligebat Iesus, sequentem se, illum, qui recubuit in coena super pectus Iesu, et dixit: Domine, quis est, qui tradet te?

21. Hunc ergo cum vidisset Cephas, dixit Iesu: Domine, hic autem, quid erit

de eo ?

22. Dixit ei Iesus: Si eum volo manere, donec veniam: quid ad te? tu me sequere.

23. Divulgatus est autem sermo iste inter fratres, quia discipulus ille non moritur. Et non dixit Iesus: Non moritur; sed: Si eum volo manere, donec veniam: quid ad te?

24. Hic est discipulus ille, qui testimonium perhibet de his, et scripsit ea; et scimus, quia verum est testimonium eius.
