here? And now, he says, I am going to Jerusalem, bound in the spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. Why then are you going, if bonds and afflictions await you? For this very reason, he says, that I may be bound for Christ, that I may die for him. For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing is more blessed than that soul. In what does he boast? In bonds, in afflictions, in a chain, in marks. I bear on my body, he says, the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ, like some great trophy; and again, For the sake of Israel, he says, I am bound with this chain; and again, For which I am an ambassador in a chain. What is this? Are you not ashamed? Do you not fear going about the world as a prisoner? Are you not afraid that someone might condemn the weakness of your God? that someone for this reason might not come to the faith? My bonds, he says, are not of such a kind; they know how to shine even in palaces. So that my bonds, he says, became known throughout the whole praetorium, and that most of the brethren in the Lord, trusting in my bonds, dare to speak the word more abundantly without fear. Do you see the strength of bonds rather than of the resurrection of the dead? They saw me bound, and are more courageous. For where there are bonds, it is necessary that something great also happen there; where there is affliction, there is certainly also salvation, there is certainly rest, there are certainly great achievements. For when the devil kicks, then he is struck; when he binds the servants of God, then the word especially increases. And see this happening everywhere. He was bound, and in prison he accomplished these things. For in my very bonds, he says. He was bound in Rome, and brought over more people; for not only he himself was courageous, but also many others through him. He was bound in Jerusalem, and while bound and speaking publicly he astounded the king, and brought the governor to fear; for having become afraid, he says, he released him, and he who had bound him was not ashamed to learn from the one who was bound about the things to come. Bound he sailed, and he undid a shipwreck, and bound up the storm. While he was in bonds that beast fastened on him, and doing no harm, fell off. He was bound in Rome, and while bound and speaking publicly he drew countless people, putting this very thing forward in place of all else, I mean the chain. But it is not possible to be bound with a chain now. But there is another chain, if we are willing. What chain is this? To restrain the 62.66 hand, not to be ready for avarice. Let us bind ourselves with this chain; instead of iron, let the fear of God be for us. Let us release those bound by poverty, by affliction. It is not the same to open the doors of a prison, and to set free a soul that is shut up; it is not the same to loose the bonds of prisoners who are bound, and to set the broken at liberty. This is greater than that; for that has no reward laid up, but this has countless rewards. The chain of Paul has become long, and has held us for a long time; for it is truly long, and more honorable than any golden chain. This chain, as if by some device, draws those who are bound to heaven, and like a golden chain let down, it draws them up to heaven itself; and the wondrous thing is that, though fastened below, it draws those who are bound upward. And yet this is not the nature of things; but when God arranges things, do not seek the nature or sequence of things, but things that are beyond nature and sequence. Let us learn not to be downcast in afflictions, nor to be disheartened. For see this blessed man; he had been scourged, and he had been scourged severely; For having inflicted many blows on them, it says; and he had been bound, and this again severely; for he cast him into the inner prison, and with greater security. And being in such circumstances around midnight, when even the most wakeful are sleeping, when another, more grievous bond, that of sleep, was pressing upon them, they sang and hymned the Lord. What could be more steadfast than these souls? They considered that the children also sang in the fire and in the furnace; perhaps they reasoned that We

Ταύτῃ τῇ ἁλύσει δήσωμεν ἑαυτούς· ἀντὶ σιδηρίου γενέσθω ἡμῖν ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ φόβος. Λύσωμεν τοὺς δεδεμένους ὑπὸ πενίας, ὑπὸ θλίψεως. Οὐκ ἔστιν ἴσον δεσμωτηρίου θύρας ἀνοῖξαι, καὶ ψυχὴν συγκεκλεισμένην ἀφεῖναι· οὐκ ἔστιν ἴσον λῦσαι δεσμὰ δεσμωτῶν δεδεμένων, καὶ τεθραυσμένους ἀπολῦσαι ἐν ἀφέσει. Τοῦτο ἐκείνου μεῖζόν ἐστιν· ἐκείνου μὲν γὰρ οὐδεὶς κεῖται μισθὸς, τούτου δὲ μυρίοι. Μακρὰ ἡ τοῦ Παύλου γέγονεν ἅλυσις, καὶ ἐπὶ πολὺ κατέσχεν ἡμᾶς· καὶ γάρ ἐστιν ὄντως μακρὰ, καὶ πάσης σειρᾶς χρυσῆς κοσμιωτέρα. Αὕτη τοὺς δεδεμένους καθάπερ διά τινος μηχανῆς ἕλκει πρὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ ὥσπερ χρυσῆ σειρὰ ἐξαρτηθεῖσα, ἀνέλκει πρὸς αὐτὸν τὸν οὐρανόν· καὶ τὸ δὴ θαυμαστὸν, κάτω δεθεῖσα, τοὺς δεδεμένους ἄνω ἕλκει. Καίτοι οὐχ αὕτη τῶν πραγμάτων ἡ φύσις· ἀλλ' ὅταν Θεὸς οἰκονομῇ, μὴ ζήτει πραγμάτων φύσιν μηδὲ ἀκολουθίαν, ἀλλὰ τὰ ὑπὲρ φύσιν καὶ ἀκολουθίαν. Μάθωμεν μηδὲ ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσι καταπίπτειν, μηδὲ δυσχεραίνειν. Ὅρα γὰρ τὸν μακάριον τοῦτον· μεμαστίγωτο, καὶ μεμαστίγωτο ἰσχυρῶς· Πολλὰς γὰρ αὑτοῖς, φησὶν, ἐπιθέντες πληγάς· καὶ ἐδέδετο, καὶ τοῦτο πάλιν ἰσχυρῶς· εἰς γὰρ τὴν ἐσωτέραν φυλακὴν ἐνέβαλεν αὐτὸν, καὶ μετὰ πλείονος ἀσφαλείας.
