(For what, he says, is it to us, if he was raised)? He showed therefore that it is also to us, if indeed He is united to us; yet he also speaks of our own things separately: For when we were dead in our trespasses, He raised us up together, and made us sit together. So that, as I was saying, do not disbelieve, having taken the proof both from the former things, and from the Head, and from His will to show forth His goodness. For how will He show it, if this does not happen? And He will show it in the ages to come. What? That the good things were both great, and more certain than all. For now what is said seems to be nonsense to the unbelievers, but then all will know. Do you wish to learn how He made us sit together? Hear Christ Himself saying to the disciples: You will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel; and again, But to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father. So it has been prepared. And he said well: In kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For to sit on the right hand is an honor above every honor, and after which there is no other. This then he says, that we too will be seated. Truly an exceeding riches, truly an exceeding greatness of His power, to sit with Christ. Even if you have ten thousand souls, do you not lose them for His sake? for if it were necessary to enter into fire, ought not this to be readily endured? And He Himself says again: I will that where I am, there my servants may be also. For if it were necessary to be cut to pieces every day, ought one not to accept it eagerly for these things? Consider where He sat down. Above all rule and authority. And with whom do you sit? With Him. Being what? Dead, by nature a child of wrath. And what have you achieved? Nothing. Truly now is a good time to cry out: O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! For by grace you have been saved, he says. For lest the greatness of the benefits should puff you up, see how he checks you: By grace you have been saved, he says. Through faith. Then, lest again free will should be harmed, he included our part also; and again he took it away, and says: And this is not of ourselves. Not even faith, he says, is of ourselves; for if He had not come, if He had not called, how could we have believed? For how, he says, will they believe, unless they hear? So that not even faith is our own. It is the gift of God, he says; not of works. For was faith not sufficient to save, he says? But that He might not save them empty and idle, God required this, he says. He said that faith saves, but through God; for since God willed it, faith saved. For how does faith save, tell me, without works? This itself is the gift of God, so that no one may boast, that he might make them grateful concerning grace. What then, he says, did He Himself prevent being justified by works? By no means; but, No one, 62.34 he says, was justified by works, so that the grace and loving-kindness of God might be shown. He did not cast off those who had works, but those who were forsaken by their works He saved by grace, so that no one should henceforth have cause to boast. 3. Then, lest hearing that not by works but by faith the whole was accomplished, you should remain idle, see what he added: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. See what he says; here he alludes to regeneration. Truly it is another creation; from non-being we were brought into being. What we were before, we died to, that is, the old man; what we were not before, we have become. Therefore the matter is a creation, and more honorable than the other; for from that one we have life, but from this one we have obtained living well. For good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them; not that we should begin, but, That we should walk; for we need a virtue that is sufficient and extends to our end. For neither, if we had to walk a road leading to a royal city, and then having completed the greater part of it, grew weary near the very end and sat down, would the walking have profited us; so neither would the hope of the calling profit in any way those who possess the matter, if we do not walk worthily of the one who called. Having been called, therefore, for good works, let us remain

(Τί γὰρ, φησὶ, πρὸς ἡμᾶς, εἰ ἐκεῖνος ἀνέστη); ἔδειξε μὲν οὖν ὅτι καὶ πρὸς ἡμᾶς, εἴ γε οὗτος ἡμῖν ἥνωται· πλὴν ὅτι καὶ τὰ ἡμῶν κατ' ἰδίαν φησίν· Ὄντας γὰρ ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασι συνήγειρε καὶ συνεκάθισεν. Ὥστε, ὅπερ ἔφην, μὴ ἀπίστει, ἀπό τε τῶν προτέρων ἀπό τε τῆς κεφαλῆς ἀπό τε τοῦ βούλεσθαι ἐνδείκνυσθαι αὐτὸν τὴν ἀγαθότητα λαβὼν τὴν ἀπόδειξιν. Πῶς γὰρ ἐνδείξεται, ἂν τοῦτο μὴ γένηται; Καὶ ἐνδείξεται ἐν τοῖς αἰῶσι τοῖς ἐπερχομένοις. Τί; Ὅτι καὶ μεγάλα τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἦν, καὶ πάντων πιστότερα. Νῦν μὲν γὰρ λῆρος εἶναι δοκεῖ τοῖς ἀπίστοις τὰ λεγόμενα, τότε δὲ πάντες εἴσονται. Βούλει μαθεῖν καὶ πῶς συνεκάθισεν; Ἄκουε αὐτοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ λέγοντος τοῖς μαθηταῖς· Καθίσεσθε ἐπὶ δώδεκα θρόνους, κρίνοντες τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ πάλιν, Τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν δοῦναι, ἀλλ' οἷς ἡτοίμασται παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός. Ὥστε ἡτοίμασται. Καὶ καλῶς εἶπεν· Ἐνχρηστότητι ἐφ' ἡμᾶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ. Τὸ γὰρ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν τιμῆς ἐστι τῆς ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν τιμὴν, καὶ μεθ' ἣν ἑτέρα οὐκ ἔστι. Τοῦτο οὖν λέγει, ὅτι καὶ ἡμεῖς καθεδούμεθα. Ὄντως ὑπερβάλλων πλοῦτος, ὄντως ὑπερβάλλον τὸ μέγεθος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ, μετὰ Χριστοῦ καθίσαι. Κἂν μυρίας ψυχὰς ἔχῃς, οὐκ ἀπολλύεις αὐτὰς ἕνεκεν αὐτοῦ; εἰ γὰρ εἰς πῦρ ἐμβῆναι ἔδει, τοῦτο οὐκ ἐχρῆν ἑτοίμως ὑπομεῖναι; Καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ πάλιν φησί· Θέλω, ἵνα ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ, καὶ οἱ διάκονοι ὦσιν οἱ ἐμοί. Εἰ γὰρ κατακόπτεσθαι ἔδει καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, ὑπὲρ τούτων οὐκ ἐχρῆν προθύμως καταδέχεσθαι; Ἐννόησον ποῦ ἐκάθισεν ἐκεῖνος. Ἐπάνω πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας. Καὶ τίνι συγκάθησαι; Ἐκείνῳ. Τίς ὤν; Νεκρὸς, φύσει τέκνον ὀργῆς. Καὶ τί κατώρθωσας; Οὐδέν. Ὄντως νῦν εὔκαιρον ἀναβοῆσαι· Ὢ βάθος πλούτου καὶ σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως Θεοῦ! Τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι, φησίν. Ἵνα γὰρ μὴ τὸ μέγεθος τῶν εὐεργεσιῶν ἐπάρῃ σε, ὅρα πῶς σε καταστέλλει· Τῇ χάριτί ἐστε σεσωσμένοι, φησί. ∆ιὰ πίστεως. Εἶτα ἵνα μὴ πάλιν τὸ αὐτεξούσιον λυμήνηται, ἔθηκε καὶ τὰ ἡμῶν· καὶ πάλιν αὐτὸ ἀνεῖλε, καί φησι· Καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ἡμῶν. Οὐδὲ ἡ πίστις, φησὶν, ἐξ ἡμῶν· εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἦλθεν, εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἐκάλεσε, πῶς ἠδυνάμεθα πιστεῦσαι; Πῶς γὰρ, φησὶ, πιστεύσουσιν, ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσωσιν; Ὥστε οὐδὲ τὸ τῆς πίστεως ἡμέτερον. Θεοῦ, φησὶ, τὸ δῶρον· οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων. Μὴ γὰρ ἤρκει ἡ πίστις σῶσαι, φησίν; Ἀλλ' ἵνα μὴ κενοὺς μηδὲ ἀργοὺς σώσῃ, ταύτην ἐζήτησεν ὁ Θεὸς, φησίν· Εἶπεν, ὅτι ἡ πίστις σώζει, ἀλλὰ διὰ Θεοῦ· ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ὁ Θεὸς ἠθέλησεν, ἡ πίστις ἔσωσεν. Ἐπεὶ πῶς σώζει ἡ πίστις, εἰπέ μοι, ἄνευ ἔργων; Τοῦτο αὐτὸ Θεοῦ δῶρόν ἐστιν, Ἵνα μή τις καυχήσηται, ἵνα εὐγνώμονας περὶ τὴν χάριν ποιήσῃ. Τί οὖν, φησὶν, αὐτὸς ἐκώλυσεν ἐξ ἔργων δικαιωθῆναι; Οὐδαμῶς· ἀλλ', Οὐδεὶς, 62.34 φησὶν, ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη, ἵνα δειχθῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ φιλανθρωπία. Οὐχὶ ἔχοντας ἔργα ἀπώσατο, ἀλλὰ προδεδομένους ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων χάριτι ἔσωσεν, ὥστε μηδένα λοιπὸν ἔχειν καυχᾶσθαι. γʹ. Εἶτα ἵνα μὴ ἀκούσας, ὅτι οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἀλλὰ πίστει τὸ πᾶν κατωρθώθη, ἀργὸς μένῃ, ὅρα τί ἐπήγαγεν· Αὐτοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν ποίημα, κτισθέντες ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἐπὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς, οἷς προητοίμασεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα ἐν αὐτοῖς περιπατήσωμεν. Ὅρα αὐτὸν τί φησι· τὴν ἀναγέννησιν ἐνταῦθα αἰνίττεται. Ὄντως κτίσις ἑτέρα ἐστίν· ἐκ τοῦ μὴ ὄντος εἰς τὸ εἶναι παρήχθημεν. Ὅπερ ἦμεν πρότερον, ἀπεθάνομεν, τουτέστιν, ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος· ὅπερ οὐκ ἦμεν πρότερον, ἐγενόμεθα. Ἄρα κτίσις τὸ πρᾶγμά ἐστι, καὶ τῆς ἑτέρας τιμιωτέρα· ἐξ ἐκείνης μὲν γὰρ τὸ ζῇν, ἐκ δὲ ταύτης τὸ καλῶς ζῇν ἡμῖν περιγέγονεν. Ἐπὶ ἔργοις ἀγαθοῖς, οἷς προητοίμασεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα ἐν αὐτοῖς περιπατήσωμεν· οὐχ ἵνα ἀρξώμεθα, ἀλλ', Ἵνα περιπατήσωμεν· διαρκοῦς γὰρ ἡμῖν χρεία τῆς ἀρετῆς καὶ ἐκτεταμένης εἰς τὴν τελευτὴν τὴν ἡμετέραν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ, εἰ βαδίζειν ὁδὸν ἔδει εἰς πόλιν φέρουσαν βασιλικὴν, εἶτα τὸ πλέον αὐτῆς ἀνύσαντες, περὶ τὸ τέλος αὐτὸ μαλακισθέντες ἐκαθίσαμεν, ὤνησεν ἂν ἡμᾶς τὸ βαδίσαι· οὕτως οὐδὲ ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς κλήσεως ὠνήσειεν ἄν τι τοὺς κεκτημένους τὸ πρᾶγμα, ἂν μὴ ἀξίως περιπατήσωμεν τοῦ καλέσαντος.
