Lead is inferior to gold, but nevertheless it needs lead to solder it together; so the soul also needs the body; or just as a noble child needs a tutor, so also the soul needs the body. And do not be surprised, if I have introduced such examples. For just as we speak of childish things, not disparaging the age, but the things belonging to it; so also concerning the body. But it is possible not to be in the flesh, if we wish, just as not on the earth, but in heaven and in spirit. For to be somewhere is not said so much by position in a place, as by disposition. At least, we say that many who are somewhere, are not, saying, ‘You were not here.’ And why do I say these things? Often we say, ‘You are not in yourself,’ ‘I am not in myself;’ and yet what is more bodily than this, when one is near to oneself? but nevertheless we do not say he is in himself. Let us become, therefore, in ourselves, in heaven, in the spirit; let us remain in the peace and the grace of God, that having been delivered from all fleshly things, we may be able to attain the promised good things in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

HOMILY 6. And He came and preached peace to you who were far off, and to those who were near; for through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow-citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Himself being the cornerstone; in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God in the Spirit. Not through another, he says, did He send, nor through some other did He announce these things to us, but He Himself through Himself. He did not send an angel, nor an archangel, since to correct such great evils was the work of none other, but of His own presence, and to announce what had come to pass. The Master undertook the rank of a servant and almost of a deacon, and came, and preached peace. To you, he says, who were far off, and to those who were near. To the Jews, he says, near, as compared to us; but far off, hinting at those from the Gentiles, as being strangers to the covenants. For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. He means peace with God; for indeed He has reconciled us. And in another way He Himself says, 'Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you'; and again, 'Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world'; and, 'Whatever you ask in My name, you will receive'; and again, 'For the Father Himself loves you.' These are proofs of peace, both for these and for those. For these, how? Because through Him we both have had access in one Spirit, you not less, and they not more, but by one grace. For He loosed wrath by His death, and made us objects of love to the Father through the Spirit. Behold again, 'in' is 'through'; through Himself and the Spirit He brought us to Him. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow-citizens with the saints. Do you see that not simply of the Jews, but of those holy and great men around Abraham and Moses and Elijah we have been enrolled into the same city, to that one we are manifested? For those who say such things, he says, make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. No longer strangers to the saints, nor sojourners. For those who are not going to obtain heavenly things are sojourners. For the Son, he says, abides forever. And members of the household, he says, of God. That which they had from the beginning through so many labors, this has been accomplished for you through the grace of God. Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Behold the hope of the calling. See how he mixes all things, the Greeks, the Jews, the apostles, the prophets, Christ; and at one time from the body, at another from the
