saying: Rebuke them that sin in the presence of all); for the rulers to be sick; for if the head is not healthy, how could the rest of the body remain strong? See, then, how great the anomaly is now. For those who live rightly, and have any boldness, have taken to the mountain tops, and have departed from our midst, 62.48 as if torn away from an enemy and foreign body, and not their own; but destroyers and men full of countless evils have leapt into the Churches; the offices have become purchasable. From this, countless evils are born, and there is no one to correct, no one to rebuke; but this disorder has taken on a certain method and sequence. Has someone sinned, and been accused? He does not hasten to show himself innocent, but to be able to find partners in his crimes. What am I to do, since Gehenna has been threatened? Believe me, that if God had not stored up our punishment there, you would see tragedies greater than the Jewish calamities every day. For what? But let no one be angry; for I will not speak by name; if someone came into the church, and setting you who are now here before him, those who are with us, were to conduct an examination; or rather, not now, but if someone on the day of Pascha were to examine with exactness all those who approach and are washed, after they have approached the mysteries, receiving such a spirit as to know with accuracy the things they have done, many things would be found heavier than the evils of the Jews. For he would have found men who practice augury, and use sorceries and omens and incantations, and fornicators, and adulterers, and drunkards, and revilers. But I do not wish to speak of the covetous, lest I should touch upon some of those standing here. What then, if someone were to investigate all those in the world who approach, what transgression would he not find? and what of the rulers? Are they not desirous of money, buying offices, envious, malicious, vainglorious, gluttonous, and slaves to money? With so much impiety occurring, what dreadful thing ought we not to expect? And that you may learn to how great a punishment those are liable who are caught in these sins, consider the things of old: one man, a soldier, stole sacred things, and all perished. Do you know the story? I speak of Carmi, who stole the devoted thing. And then the prophet said, that Their land was filled with omens, like that of the foreigners. But now countless evils abound everywhere, and no one is afraid. Let us fear, therefore; for God knows how to punish the righteous with the ungodly, as happened in the case of Daniel, in the case of the three young men, as in the case of countless others, as in the wars that are still happening even now. For these, by this means, put off even the great weight of sins they have, but those do not. For all these reasons, let us take heed to ourselves. Do you not see the wars? Do you not hear of the calamities? Are you not taught by these things? Whole nations and cities have been swallowed up and have perished, so many myriads are slaves among the barbarians; if we are not brought to our senses by Gehenna, let us be so at least by these things. Are these things also threats, and not accomplished facts? They paid a great penalty, but we shall pay a greater, who are not even brought to our senses by their calamities. The word is burdensome, I know it too, but if we pay heed to it, it has profit. For he does not have to speak to please, or rather never, 62.49 but always the things that can restrain and chasten the soul. For these things become the causes of the good things to 62.50 come; which may it be granted to us all to attain, by grace and loving-kindness.

HOMILY VII.

To me, the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, among the Gentiles

to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created

Ἥμαρτέ τις, καὶ ἐνεκλήθη; Οὐ πρὸς τὸ δεῖξαι ἑαυτὸν ἀθῷον σπεύδει, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὸ δυνηθῆναι κοινωνοὺς τῶν ἐγκλημάτων εὑρεῖν. Τί πάθω, ὅτι γέεννα ἠπείληται; Πιστεύσατέ μοι, ὡς εἰ μὴ ἐκεῖ τεταμίευτο τὴν κόλασιν ἡμῖν ὁ Θεὸς, τῶν Ἰουδαϊκῶν συμφορῶν μείζους ἂν εἴδετε καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν τραγῳδίας. Τί γάρ; ἀλλὰ μὴ ὀργισθήτω μηδείς· οὐ γὰρ ὀνομαστὶ ἐρῶ· εἴ τις παραγενόμενος εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, ὑμᾶς τοὺς νῦν ὄντας ἐνθάδε παραστήσας, τοὺς μεθ' ἡμῶν ὄντας, ἐξέτασιν ἐποιεῖτο· μᾶλλον δὲ οὐ νῦν, ἀλλ' εἴ τις κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πάσχα πάντας τοὺς προσιόντας καὶ λουομένους, μετὰ τὸ προσελθεῖν τοῖς μυστηρίοις ἐξήτασε σὺν ἀκριβείᾳ, πνεῦμα τοιοῦτον λαβὼν, ὥστε εἰδέναι τὰ πεπραγμένα αὐτοῖς μετὰ ἀκριβείας, πολλὰ ἂν εὑρέθη βαρύτερα τῶν Ἰουδαϊκῶν κακῶν. Τί δὲ, εἴ τις τοὺς ἐν τῇ οἰκουμένῃ προσιόντας ἅπαντας ἠρεύνησε, ποῖον οὐκ ἂν εὗρε πλημμέλημα; τί δὲ τοὺς ἄρχοντας; οὐχὶ χρημάτων ἐφιεμένους, οὐχὶ ἀρχὰς ὠνουμένους, οὐχὶ φθονεροὺς, οὐχὶ βασκάνους, οὐχὶ κενοδόξους, οὐχὶ λαιμάργους, καὶ χρημάτων δούλους; Τοσαύτης οὖν ἀσεβείας γινομένης, τί οὐχὶ προσδοκῆσαι χρὴ δεινόν; Καὶ ἵνα μάθητε ὅσῃ τιμωρίᾳ ὑπεύθυνοί εἰσιν οἱ τούτοις ἁλισκόμενοι τοῖς ἁμαρτήμασιν, ἐννοεῖτε τὰ παλαιά· εἷς ἔκλεψεν ἱερὰ χρήματα στρατιώτης ἄνθρωπος, καὶ πάντες ἀπώλοντο. Ἆρα ἴστε τὴν ἱστορίαν; Περὶ τοῦ Χαρμὶ λέγω τοῦ τὸ ἀνάθημα κλέψαντος. Καὶ τότε μὲν ὁ προφήτης ἔλεγεν, ὅτι Ἐνεπλήσθη ἡ χώρα αὐτῶν κλῃδονισμῶν, ὡς ἡ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων. Νῦν δὲ μυρία γέμει πανταχοῦ κακὰ, καὶ οὐδεὶς δέδοικε. Φοβηθῶμεν λοιπόν· οἶδεν ὁ Θεὸς καὶ δικαίους μετὰ ἀσεβῶν τιμωρεῖσθαι, οἷον γέγονεν ἐπὶ τοῦ ∆ανιὴλ, ἐπὶ τῶν τριῶν παίδων, οἷον ἐπὶ μυρίων ἑτέρων, οἷον ἐπὶ τῶν πολέμων τῶν ἔτι καὶ νῦν συμβαινόντων. Οὗτοι μὲν γὰρ καὶ αὐτὸ ὅσον ἔχουσιν ἁμαρτημάτων βάρος, διὰ τούτου ἀποτίθενται, ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οὔ. ∆ιὰ ταῦτα πάντα προσέχωμεν ἑαυτοῖς. Οὐχ ὁρᾶτε τοὺς πολέμους; οὐκ ἀκούετε τὰς συμφοράς; οὐ παιδεύεσθε τούτοις; Ἔθνη καὶ πόλεις ὁλόκληροι κατεποντίσθησαν καὶ ἀπώλοντο, μυριάδες τοσαῦται παρὰ τοῖς βαρβάροις δουλεύουσιν· ἂν μὴ τῇ γεέννῃ σωφρονιζώμεθα, κἂν τούτοις. Μὴ καὶ ταῦτα ἀπειλαί εἰσι, καὶ οὐχὶ πράγματα ἐκβεβηκότα; Μεγάλην ἐκεῖνοι τὴν δίκην ἔδωκαν, ἀλλὰ μείζονα δώσομεν ἡμεῖς, οἱ μηδὲ ταῖς ἐκείνων σωφρονιζόμενοι συμφοραῖς. Φορτικὸς ὁ λόγος, οἶδα κἀγὼ, ἀλλ' ἐὰν αὐτῷ προσέχωμεν, κέρδος ἔχων. Οὐ γὰρ ἔχει πρὸς χάριν ὁμιλεῖν, μᾶλλον δὲ οὐδέποτε, 62.49 ἀλλ' ἀεὶ τὰ δυνάμενα συστεῖλαι καὶ σωφρονίσαι τὴν ψυχήν. Ταῦτα γὰρ αἴτια γίνεται τῶν μελλόντων ἀγα 62.50 θῶν· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ.
