how often did they seek to emigrate? and after all these things he was inflamed and raged, and was ready to suffer for them. Thus must one love enemies, being beaten and distressed and doing all things and being separated, to long for their salvation. And what of Paul, tell me, did he not even ask for Gehenna in their stead? But it is necessary to bring the example from the Master. For so he himself does, saying, that He makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good; bringing the example from his Father, but we from Christ himself. He came to them, I speak according to the economy, he became a servant for them, he humbled himself, he emptied himself, he took the form of a servant; and having come, neither did he himself go into the way of the Gentiles, and he commanded this to his disciples; and not only this, but he also went about healing every disease and every infirmity. 62.55 What then? All the others were astonished and marveled, and said, Whence has this man these things? but these, being well-treated, said, He has a demon, and, He blasphemes, and, He is mad, and, He is a deceiver. Did he then reject them? Not at all, but he even benefited them more greatly hearing these things, and went to those who were about to crucify him, that he might only save them. And after being crucified, what does he say? Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And having suffered evil before this, and having suffered evil after this, until his last breath he did all things concerning them, he prayed for them. And after the cross what did he not do for them? did he not send apostles? did he not work signs? did he not set everything in motion? Thus must one love enemies, thus imitate Christ. Thus did Paul, being stoned, suffering countless things, do all things for them. Hear him saying: My good pleasure and my prayer for them 62.56 is unto salvation; and again, For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God; and again, If you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in, how much more shall these be grafted into their own olive tree? From how much affection do you think these words are said? from how much good will? It is not possible to say, it is not. Thus must one love enemies; this is to love God, the one who commanded, the one who gave the law; to imitate him is to love one's enemy. Consider that you are not benefiting your enemy, but yourself, you are not loving him, but you are obeying God. Knowing these things, therefore, let us confirm love for one another, so that having accomplished this with precision, we may obtain the promised good things in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, honor, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 62.55 HOMILY 8. I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all humility and meekness. It is the excellence of teachers not to seek honor, nor glory from those they rule, but their salvation, and to do all things for this; as one who seeks that would not be a teacher, but a tyrant. For God did not set you over them for this reason, that you might enjoy greater service, but that your own affairs might be neglected, and all of theirs might be built up. This is a teacher's part; such was the blessed Paul, who was free from all pride, and was so disposed, as one of the many, or rather, even the least of them. For this reason he also calls himself their servant, and utters most things in the manner of a supplication. See, at any rate, that even now he writes nothing imperatively, nothing authoritatively, but modestly, and with reservation. I therefore, he says, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. What do you beseech, tell me? that you yourself might obtain something? Not at all, he says, but that I might save others. And yet those who beseech, beseech for things that concern them, This also concerns me, he says, as he also said when writing elsewhere: Now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord. For he always vehemently desired the salvation of his disciples. I the prisoner in the Lord. A great and potent dignity, and greater than royalty and consulship and all things. Which therefore also to
