the roof fell upon his children, and thus they were slain; what was it, to see not one house, not two children, but a nation of twelve myriads being buried under the roofs? You know how great the terror is. For this threat has lately come to us also, not a prophet uttering a voice (for we are not worthy to hear such a voice), but the threat from above crying out more clearly than any trumpet. But, as I was saying, Yet three days, it says, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. The threat is truly dreadful. But there is nothing of the sort now. For it is not, Yet three days, 62.80 nor, Nineveh shall be overthrown, but for many days the Church of the world has been overthrown, and lies on the ground, all being equally held in evil, but rather those in authority being liable for the same things; whence also the evil is worse, inasmuch as their compulsion is greater. Therefore do not wonder why I have exhorted you to do greater things than the Ninevites; or rather, I am not now proclaiming a fast only, but I am pointing out that medicine which raised up that falling city. What is that? The Lord saw, it says, that everyone turned from his evil ways, and He repented of the evil that He had said He would do to them. Let us do this, both we and you; let us turn from the love of money, from the love of glory, beseeching God to stretch out His hand, and to raise up the fallen members. For the fear is not for the same things. For then stones and wood were about to fall, and bodies to be destroyed; but now none of these things, but souls are about to be delivered to the fire of Gehenna. Let us beseech, let us confess, let us give thanks to Him for things past, let us ask for things to come that we may be deemed worthy, being delivered from this fierce and most terrible beast, to send up thanks to the man-loving God and Father, with whom to the Son together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

HOMILY 11.

One body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 1. Paul seeks from us not a casual love, but one that glues us together and makes us to be inseparably joined to one another, and provides such a great and so precise a union, as of members to members. For this is what works great good. For this reason he says: One body, both in sympathy, and in not being cast down by the good things of others, and in rejoicing together. And having shown all things together through this, he said well, And one Spirit, showing that from the one body there will be one spirit, or that it is possible to be one body, but not one spirit; as if one were a friend even of heretics; or from this he shames them into concord, saying something like this: You who have received one Spirit, and have been given to drink from one fountain, ought not to be of a divided mind; or by spirit here he means zeal. Then adding, Just as you were called, he says, In one hope of your calling. That is, God has called you to the same things; He has assigned nothing more to one than to another; to all immortality, to all eternal life, to all undying glory, to all brotherhood, to all an inheritance 62.80.30 He has granted. A common head of all He became, 62.80 He raised all together and made them sit together. You, therefore, who have such equality of honor in spiritual things, from where do you have such high thoughts? that such a one is rich, and such a one is powerful? and how would this not be a laugh? For tell me, if a king once took ten men, clothed them all in purple, and set them on the royal throne, and gave all the same honor, would any of these have dared to reproach another, as being richer, or as being more splendid? By no means. And

Μὴ τοίνυν θαυμάσητε διὰ τί μείζονα παρῄνεσα ποιεῖν τῶν Νινευϊτῶν· μᾶλλον δὲ οὐ νηστείαν κηρύττω νῦν μόνον, ἀλλὰ τὸ φάρμακον ἐκεῖνο ὑποδείκνυμι, ὃ καὶ τὴν πόλιν ἐκείνην πίπτουσαν ἀνέστησε. Ποῖον δὴ τοῦτο; Εἶδε Κύριος, φησὶν, ὅτι ἀπέστη ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τῶν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ τῶν πονηρῶν, καὶ μετενόησεν ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ, ᾗ ἐλάλησε ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς. Τοῦτο πράττωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς καὶ ὑμεῖς· ἀποστῶμεν τοῦ τῶν χρημάτων ἔρωτος, τοῦ τῆς δόξης, παρακαλοῦντες τὸν Θεὸν χεῖρα ὀρέξαι, καὶ διαναστῆσαι τὰ πεπτωκότα μέλη. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ὑπὲρ τῶν αὐτῶν ὁ φόβος. Τότε μὲν γὰρ λίθοι καὶ ξύλα καταπίπτειν ἔμελλον, καὶ σώματα ἀναιρεῖσθαι· νῦν δὲ τούτων οὐδὲν, ἀλλὰ ψυχαὶ τῷ τῆς γεέννης μέλλουσι παραδίδοσθαι πυρί. Παρακαλέσωμεν, ἐξομολογησώμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῶν προτέρων αὐτῷ χάριν ὁμολογήσωμεν, ὑπὲρ τῶν μελλόντων αἰτῶμεν ἵνα καταξιωθῶμεν, τοῦ θηρίου τούτου τοῦ χαλεποῦ καὶ δεινοτάτου ἀπαλλαγέντες, χάριν ἀναπέμψαι τῷ φιλανθρώπῳ Θεῷ καὶ Πατρὶ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Υἱῷ ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ΟΜΙΛΙΑ ΙΑʹ.

Ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν πνεῦμα, καθὼς καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως

ὑμῶν· εἷς Κύριος, μία πίστις, ἓν βάπτισμα· εἷς Θεὸς Πατὴρ πάντων, ὁ ἐπὶ πάντων, καὶ διὰ πάντων, καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν. Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ. αʹ. Ἀγάπην ζητεῖ παρ' ἡμῶν ὁ Παῦλος οὐ τὴν τυχοῦσαν, ἀλλὰ τὴν συγκολλῶσαν ἡμᾶς καὶ ἀδιασπάστως ἔχειν πρὸς ἀλλήλους ποιοῦσαν, καὶ τοσαύτην ἕνωσιν καὶ οὕτως ἀκριβῆ παρεχομένην, ὡσανεὶ μέλη πρὸς μέλη. Αὕτη γάρ ἐστιν ἡ τὰ μεγάλα ἐργαζομένη καλά. ∆ιὰ τοῦτό φησιν· Ἓν σῶμα, καὶ τῇ συμπαθείᾳ, καὶ τῷ μὴ βάλλεσθαι τοῖς ἑτέρων ἀγαθοῖς, καὶ τῷ συγχαίρειν. Καὶ πάντα ὁμοῦ διὰ τούτου δείξας, Καὶ ἓν πνεῦμα, καλῶς εἶπε, δεικνὺς ὅτι ἀπὸ τοῦ ἑνὸς σώματος ἓν πνεῦμα ἔσται, ἢ ὅτι ἔστι μὲν σῶμα εἶναι ἓν, οὐχ ἓν δὲ πνεῦμα· ὡς ἂν εἴ τις καὶ αἱρετικῶν φίλος εἴη· ἢ ἀπὸ τούτου πρὸς ὁμόνοιαν δυσωπεῖ, τοιοῦτό τι λέγων· Οἱ ἓν πνεῦμα λαβόντες, καὶ ἐκ μιᾶς ποτισθέντες πηγῆς, οὐκ ὀφείλετε διχονοεῖν· ἢ πνεῦμα ἐνταῦθα τὴν προθυμίαν φησίν. Εἶτα ἐπάγων, Καθὼς ἐκλήθητε, φησὶν, Ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως ὑμῶν. Τουτέστιν, Ὁ Θεὸς ὑμᾶς ἐπὶ τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἐκάλεσεν· οὐδὲν ἑτέρῳ πλέον ἀπένειμε τοῦ ἑτέρου· πᾶσιν ἀθανασίαν, πᾶσι ζωὴν αἰώνιον, πᾶσι δόξαν ἀθάνατον, πᾶσιν ἀδελφότητα, πᾶσι κληρονο 62.80.30 μίαν ἐχαρίσατο. Κοινὴ πάντων ἐγένετο κεφαλὴ, 62.80 πάντας συνήγειρε καὶ συνεκάθισεν. Οἱ τοίνυν ἐν τοῖς πνευματικοῖς τοσαύτην ἔχοντες ἰσοτιμίαν, πόθεν μέγα φρονεῖτε; ὅτι ὁ δεῖνα πλούσιος, καὶ ὁ δεῖνα ἰσχυρός; καὶ πῶς οὐκ ἂν εἴη τοῦτο γέλως; Εἰπὲ γάρ μοι, εἰ ὁ βασιλεύς ποτε λαβὼν ὀνόματα δέκα, πάντας ἁλουργίδα ἐνέδυσε, καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ θρόνου ἐκάθισε τοῦ βασιλικοῦ, καὶ πᾶσιν ἔδωκε τὴν αὐτὴν τιμὴν, ἆρα ἂν τούτων ἐτόλμησέ τις ὀνειδίσαι τὸν ἕτερον, ὡς πλουσιώτερος ὢν, ἢ ὡς λαμπρότερος; Οὐδαμῶς. Καὶ
