they were 62.98 able; for many much weaker than you and richer and more delicate have undertaken that hard and rough life. And why do I speak of men? Maidens not yet twenty years old, who have spent all their time in bedrooms and in sheltered nurture, [in] chambers full of perfumes and incense, lying on a soft couch, they themselves also delicate by nature, and becoming softer by much attendance, having no other work throughout the whole day than to adorn themselves and wear gold and enjoy much luxury, not even serving themselves, but having many maidservants standing by, having soft garments softer than their bodies, fine and delicate linens, constantly occupied with roses and such fragrances; these, indeed, suddenly seized by the fire of Christ, stripping off all that indolence and pride, and forgetting luxury and age, just like some noble athletes stripping off those soft things, entered into the midst of the contests. And perhaps I will seem to say unbelievable things, but nevertheless they are true. For I have heard of these maidens, so delicate, that they brought themselves to such a hard life as to put the roughest of hair-shirts on their naked bodies, and for those delicate heels to be unshod, and to lie upon a bed of straw; or rather to stay awake for most of the night, and to take no thought for perfume or any other of their old things, but even to have their so-cared-for head unkempt, having their hair bound up simply and at random, so as not to fall into indecency. And their table is only an evening one, a table not even of vegetables or bread, but of fine flour and beans and chickpeas, and olives and figs; and constant wool-working and tasks much harder than those of the household maids. For what? They undertook to care for those who were sick in body, carrying their beds, washing their feet; and many of them also cook. So powerful is the fire of Christ; so is zeal superior even to nature. But I ask nothing of the sort from you, since you are willing to be outdone by women. 4. At least do those things that are not burdensome, restrain your hand and your licentious eyes. What is difficult, tell me, what is hard? Do just things, wrong no one, neither the poor man, nor the rich, nor the man of the marketplace, nor the hired laborer; for injustice can extend even to the poor. Or do you not see how many quarrels these men cause, and overturn everything? Make use of marriage, have children; even Paul commanded such people, he wrote to such people. Is that contest great, and the cliff high, and the peak near heaven, and you cannot reach what is great? Therefore at least hold to the lesser things, and strive for the lower things. You cannot empty out your possessions? At least do not seize the things of others, nor do wrong. You cannot fast? At least do not lead yourself into luxury. You cannot lie down on a bed of straw? Do not make for me silver-inlaid couches, but use a couch and bedding not made for show, but for rest, nor ivory couches; restrain yourself. Why do you fill your ship with ten thousand tons of cargo? If you are moderate, you will fear nothing, not envy, not robbers, not plotters. For you are not so 62.99 rich in possessions as you are in cares; you are not so wealthy in what you own as in anxieties and dangers. Those who wish to be rich, he says, bring upon themselves temptations and harmful desires. Those who want to possess much endure these things. I do not say: Serve the sick person; at least command your servant to do this. Do you see how it is not burdensome? For how could it be, when delicate maidens outstrip us by a great distance? Let us be ashamed, I beseech you, that in worldly matters we in no way yield to them, not in wars, not in contests; but in the spiritual contests they achieve more than we, and are the first to seize the prize, and fly higher, like certain eagles; while we, like jackdaws, below around the smell of burnt offering

Τί γάρ; τὰς καμνούσας τὸ σῶμα θεραπεύειν ἀνεδέξαντο, τὰς κλίνας βαστάζουσαι, τοὺς πόδας νίπτουσαι· πολλαὶ δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ μαγειρεύουσι. Τοσαῦτα δύναται τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸ πῦρ· οὕτω καὶ φύσεως ἀνώτερον ἡ προθυμία. Πλὴν ἀλλ' οὐδὲν τοιοῦτον ἐγὼ ὑμᾶς ἀπαιτῶ, ἐπειδὴ βούλεσθε παρελαύνεσθαι παρὰ γυναικῶν. δʹ. Κἂν γοῦν ὅσα μὴ φορτικὰ, ταῦτα πράττετε, χειρὸς κρατεῖτε καὶ ἀκολάστων ὀφθαλμῶν. Τί δύσκολον, εἰπέ μοι, τί δυσχερές; ∆ίκαια πράττετε, μηδένα ἀδικεῖτε, μήτε ὁ πένης, μήτε ὁ πλούσιος, μήτε ὁ ἀγοραῖος, μήτε ὁ μισθωτός· ἔστι γὰρ καὶ μέχρι πενήτων ἀδικίαν διελθεῖν. Ἢ οὐχ ὁρᾶτε πόσας οὗτοι μάχας ποιοῦσι, καὶ πάντα ἀνατρέπουσι; Κέχρησο γάμῳ, ἔχε παῖδας· καὶ Παῦλος τοιούτοις ἐπέταττε, τοιούτοις ἔγραφε. Μέγας ἐκεῖνος ὁ ἀγὼν, καὶ ὑψηλὸς ὁ σκόπελος, καὶ ἐγγὺς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἡ κορυφὴ, καὶ οὐ δύνασαι φθάσαι πρὸς τὸ μέγα; Οὐκοῦν κἂν τῶν ἐλαττόνων ἔχου, καὶ τῶν κατωτέρων ἐφίεσο. Οὐ δύνασαι κενῶσαι τὰ χρήματα; κἂν τὰ τῶν ἄλλων μὴ ἅρπαζε, μηδὲ ἀδίκει. Οὐ δύνασαι νηστεῦσαι; κἂν μὴ εἰς τρυφὴν σεαυτὸν ἐξαγάγῃς. Οὐ δύνασαι ἐπὶ στιβάδος κατακλιθῆναι; μή μοι κλίνας ἀργυρενδέτους κατασκεύαζε, ἀλλὰ κέχρησο κλίνῃ καὶ στρώμασι μὴ πρὸς ἐπίδειξιν πεποιημένοις, ἀλλὰ πρὸς ἀνάπαυσιν, μηδὲ ἐλεφαντίνας κλίνας· σύστειλον σαυτόν. Τί μυρίων ἀγωγίμων πληροῖς τὴν ὁλκάδα; Ἂν ᾖς εὐσταλὴς, οὐδὲν δείσεις, οὐ φθόνον, οὐ λῃστὰς, οὐκ ἐπιβούλους. Οὐδὲ γὰρ οὕτω 62.99 τοῖς χρήμασιν, ὡς ταῖς φροντίσι πλουτεῖς· οὐχ οὕτως εὐπορεῖς ἐν τοῖς κτήμασιν, ὡς ταῖς ἀγωνίαις καὶ τοῖς κινδύνοις. Οἵτινες βούλονται πλουτεῖν, φησὶ, πειρασμοὺς καὶ ἐπιθυμίας βλαβερὰς ἑαυτοῖς ἐπεισάγουσι. Ταῦτα ὑπομένουσιν οἱ πολλὰ κεκτῆσθαι βουλόμενοι. Οὐ λέγω· ∆ιακόνησον τῷ κάμνοντι· κἂν τῷ παιδὶ κέλευσον τοῦτο ποιεῖν. Ὁρᾷς πῶς φορτικὸν οὐκ ἔστι; πῶς γὰρ, ἔνθα κόραι ἁπαλαὶ ἐκ πολλοῦ τοῦ διαστήματος ἡμᾶς παρελαύνουσιν; Αἰσχυνθῶμεν, παρακαλῶ, ὅτι ἐν μὲν τοῖς κοσμικοῖς οὐδαμοῦ παραχωροῦμεν αὐταῖς, οὐκ ἐν πολέμοις, οὐκ ἐν ἄθλοις· ἐν δὲ τοῖς πνευματικοῖς ἀγῶσι πλέον ἡμῶν φέρονται, καὶ πρῶται τὸ βραβεῖον ἁρπάζουσι, καὶ ὑψηλότερα πέτανται, καθάπερ ἀετοί τινες· ἡμεῖς δὲ, καθάπερ κολοιοὶ, κάτω περὶ τὴν κνίσσαν
