sent her away pregnant. Who would not have pitied her, pregnant with his child? But the just man was not swayed; for he put his love for his wife before all things. 7. Let us also imitate him. Let no one reproach his neighbor for poverty, let no one love money, and all is resolved. And let not a wife say to her husband: “Unmanly and cowardly, full of sloth and sluggishness and much sleep, so-and-so, a humble man and from humble origins, by undertaking risks and setting out on journeys, has made a great fortune, and his wife wears gold, and goes forth on a pair of white mules, is carried about everywhere, has herds of servants and a swarm of eunuchs; but you have cowered down, and you live in vain.” Let a wife not say these things, and things like them; for she is the body, not to give orders to the head, but to be persuaded and to obey. How then, she says, will she bear poverty? From where will she find comfort? Let her consider those who are poorer than herself, let her reflect on how many noble maidens from noble families have not only received nothing from their husbands, but have even given their own possessions, and have spent all of their own things; let her think of the dangers from such riches, and she will embrace a quiet life. And in general, if she is lovingly disposed toward her husband, she will say nothing of the sort, but she will prefer to have him near her providing nothing, than ten thousand talents of gold with the worry and anxiety that always comes to wives from their husbands' journeys abroad. But let not the husband, hearing these things, as one having authority, turn to insults and blows, but let him advise, let him admonish, as she is less perfect, let him persuade her with reasoning, let him never raise his hands; these things are far from a free soul. But neither insults, nor reproaches, nor revilings; but let him correct her as one who is more foolishly disposed. From where 62.145 will this be? If she learns true wealth, if she learns the philosophy from above, she will make no such accusations. Let him teach her that poverty is no evil; let him teach, not only by what he says, but also by what he does; let him teach her to despise glory, and his wife will neither say nor desire any such thing. As one receiving a statue, so from that evening, when he receives her into the bridal chamber, let him teach her moderation, gentleness, so that she may live virtuously, from the very beginning and from the very threshold casting down the love of money; and let him instruct her in philosophy, and advise her not to have gold hanging on her ears and around her cheeks and placed about her neck, nor lying about the chamber, nor golden and costly garments stored away; but let her adornment be bright, yet let her brightness not fall into insolence; but leaving these things to those on the stage, let him himself with much decorum beautify the house, so that it breathes moderation rather than any other fragrance. For two, and even three good things will come from this: first, the bride will not be grieved, when the bridal chambers are dismantled, and the garments and gold and silver vessels are sent back to each person; second, the bridegroom will not be anxious about the loss and the safekeeping of what has been provided. Third again, in addition to these, the chief of all good things, he will show his own mind from these very things, that he delights in none of these things, and that he will also put an end to all the rest, and will never allow either dancing or immodest songs to take place. And I know that I seem perhaps ridiculous to some for legislating such things; but if you are persuaded by me, as time goes on, and you enjoy the benefit from the matter, then you will know the gain; and the laughter will cease, and you will laugh at the present custom, and you will see that what happens now is truly the work of foolish children and drunken men; but the things which I advise belong to moderation and philosophy, and the highest way of life. What then do I say is necessary? Remove from the marriage all shameful songs, satanic songs, immodest melodies, the gatherings of licentious youths, and these things will be able to make the bride temperate. For she will at once reason with herself, “Amazing! What sort of man is this? He is a philosopher, he considers the present life as nothing, for childbearing and
