of this, but not to bring up children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord? 62.151 For this very reason we are the first to reap the fruits, bringing up our children to be insolent, intemperate, disobedient, and boorish. Let us not, then, do this, but let us obey this blessed one who exhorts us; let us bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord; let us give them an example, causing them from their earliest age to be occupied with the reading of the Scriptures. Alas! because I am constantly saying these things, I am thought to be talking nonsense; but nevertheless I will not cease doing my part. For what reason, tell me, do you not imitate the ancients? Especially you women, emulate those admirable women. Was the child born? Imitate Hannah; learn what she did; she brought him up at once to the temple. Who of you would not wish her own son to be a Samuel once, rather than king of the whole world ten thousand times? And how is it possible, you say, for him to become such? Why is it not possible? Because you do not want it, nor do you hand him over to those who are able to make him such. And who is such a one, you say? God; since she too entrusted him to Him. For not even Eli was one of those most capable of shaping him; for how could he, who was not even able to manage his own sons? but the faith of the woman and her zeal accomplished the same. She bore a first, and only, and did not even know if she would bear others. And she did not say: I will wait for the child to grow up, so that he may deal with the affairs of life; I will allow him to linger a little in his childhood; but the woman, thrusting all these things aside, had one purpose only, how from the very beginning she might dedicate the spiritual image to God. Let us be ashamed, O men, of the woman’s philosophy; she brought him up to God, and left him there. For this reason her marriage also became more glorious, because she first sought the spiritual things, because she dedicated the first-fruits; for this reason her womb became fruitful, and she acquired other children; for this reason she also saw him well-reputed in the world. For if men, when honored, honor in return, will not God much more, who does this even without being honored? How long are we flesh? How long do we stoop to the earth? Let all things be secondary for us to the care of our children, and to bringing them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. If he learns to be a philosopher from the beginning, he has acquired a wealth greater than all wealth, and a more powerful glory. You will not accomplish so much by teaching him a trade and a secular education, through which he will acquire possessions, as you will if you teach him a trade through which he will despise possessions. If you wish to make him rich, do so in this way. For a rich person is not one who needs many possessions and is clothed in much, but one who has need of nothing. Discipline your son in this, teach him this; this is the greatest wealth. Do not seek how you may make him well-reputed in secular learning, and how you will make him famous, but take care how you will teach him to despise the glory that is in this life; from that he would become more brilliant and more glorious. These things are possible for both the poor and the rich to do; these things one learns not from a teacher, nor through a trade, but through the divine oracles. Do not seek how he may live a long life here, but how he may live one there that is infinite and unending. Bestow on him the great things, not the small. Hear Paul saying: Bring them up in the 62.152 discipline and instruction of the Lord. Do not be eager to make him an orator, but train him to be a philosopher. For if the former is not, there will be no harm; but if the latter is absent, there will be no gain from countless rhetorical skills. There is need of character, not of words, of morals, not of cleverness, of deeds, not of speeches. These things procure the kingdom, these things also bestow the truly good things. Do not sharpen the tongue, but purify the soul. I say these things not to forbid education, but to forbid paying attention to those things alone. Do not suppose that only the monk needs these lessons from the Scriptures; for most of all, these are needed by the children who are about to enter this life. For just as of the construction of the ship and of the pilot and of the crew of sailors, not this one

Μὴ τοίνυν τοῦτο ποιῶμεν, ἀλλὰ πειθώμεθα τῷ μακαρίῳ τούτῳ παραινοῦντι· ἐκτρέφωμεν αὐτὰ ἐν παιδείᾳ καὶ νουθεσίᾳ Κυρίου· δῶμεν αὐτοῖς ὑπόδειγμα, ἐκ πρώτης ἡλικίας τῇ τῶν Γραφῶν ἀναγνώσει ποιοῦντες αὐτοὺς ἐνσχολάζειν. Εἰ γὰρ ἄνθρωποι τιμώμενοι ἀντιτιμῶσιν, οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὁ Θεὸς, ὁ καὶ χωρὶς τοῦ τιμηθῆναι τοῦτο ποιῶν; Μέχρι τίνος ἐσμὲν σάρκες; μέχρι τίνος ἐπὶ γῆς κύπτομεν; Πάντα ἡμῖν δεύτερα ἔστω τῆς προνοίας τῶν παίδων, καὶ τοῦ ἐν παιδείᾳ καὶ νουθεσίᾳ Κυρίου αὐτὰ ἐκτρέφεσθαι. Ἂν μάθῃ φιλόσοφος εἶναι ἐκ προοιμίων, πλοῦτον ἐκτήσατο παντὸς πλούτου μείζονα, καὶ δόξαν δυνατωτέραν. Οὐδὲν τοσοῦτον ἐργάσῃ τέχνην διδάσκων αὐτὸν καὶ παιδείαν τὴν ἔξωθεν, δι' ἧς χρήματα κτήσεται, ὅσον ἐὰν διδάξῃς αὐτὸν τέχνην, δι' ἧς χρημάτων καταφρονήσει. Εἰ βούλει ποιῆσαι αὐτὸν πλούσιον, οὕτω ποίησον. Πλούσιος γὰρ οὐχ ὁ πολλῶν χρημάτων δεόμενος, καὶ πολλὰ περιβεβλημένος, ἀλλ' ὁ μηδενὸς χρείαν ἔχων. Τοῦτο παίδευσον τὸν υἱὸν, τοῦτο δίδαξον· οὗτος μέγιστος πλοῦτος. Μὴ ζήτει πῶς εὐδόκιμον ἐργάσῃ ἐν διδάγμασι τοῖς ἔξωθεν, καὶ ἐπίδοξον ποιήσεις, ἀλλὰ φρόντισον πῶς αὐτὸν διδάξεις καταφρονεῖν τῆς δόξης τῆς ἐν τῷ βίῳ τούτῳ· ἐκεῖθεν λαμπρότερος καὶ ἐνδοξότερος γένοιτο ἄν. Ταῦτα καὶ τῷ πένητι καὶ τῷ πλουσίῳ δυνατὸν ποιεῖν· ταῦτα οὐκ ἐκ· διδασκάλου μανθάνει τις, οὐδὲ διὰ τέχνης, ἀλλὰ διὰ τῶν θείων λογίων. Μὴ ζήτει ὅπως μακρὸν ὧδε ζήσεται βίον, ἀλλ' ὅπως ἐκεῖ ἄπειρον καὶ ἀτελεύτητον. Τὰ μεγάλα αὐτῷ χαρίζου, μὴ τὰ μικρά. Ἄκουε Παύλου λέγοντος· Ἐκτρέφετε αὐτὰ ἐν παι 62.152 δεία καὶ νουθεσίᾳ Κυρίου. Μὴ ῥήτορα αὐτὸν σπούδαζε ποιῆσαι, ἀλλὰ φιλοσοφεῖν παίδευε. Ἐκείνου μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ὄντος, οὐδὲν ἔσται βλάβος· τούτου δὲ ἀπόντος, οὐδὲν ἔσται κέρδος μυρίας ῥητορείας. Τρόπων χρεία, οὐ λόγων, ἤθους, οὐ δεινότητος, ἔργων, οὐ ῥημάτων. Ταῦτα προξενεῖ τὴν βασιλείαν, ταῦτα χαρίζεται καὶ τὰ ὄντως ἀγαθά. Μὴ τὴν γλῶτταν ἀκονήσῃς, ἀλλὰ τὴν ψυχὴν ἐκκάθαιρε. Οὐ κωλύων παιδεύειν ταῦτα λέγω, ἀλλὰ κωλύων ἐκείνοις μόνοις προσέχειν. Μὴ νομίσῃς ὅτι τῷ μονάζοντι μόνῳ τούτων δεῖ τῶν παιδευμάτων τῶν ἀπὸ τῶν Γραφῶν· μάλιστα γὰρ τούτων δεῖ τοῖς παισὶ τοῖς μέλλουσιν εἰς τὸν βίον τοῦτον ἥκειν. Ὥσπερ γὰρ τῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου κατασκευῆς καὶ κυβερνήτου καὶ πληρώματος τῶν ναυτῶν οὐχ οὗτος
