All these things are proper to God, when we make them beneficent, when philanthropic, when we have taught them to esteem the present things as nothing. Let this therefore be our work, both to mould and to discipline ourselves and them as is needful; for with what confidence shall we stand before the judgment-seat of Christ? For if he who has unruly children is unworthy of the episcopate, much more of the kingdom of heaven. What are you saying? Even if we have a disorderly wife, or children, shall we be held accountable? Yes, if we do not contribute our part with all exactness; for our own virtue is not sufficient for salvation. For if he who did not invest the one talent gained nothing, but was punished even so, it is clear that our own virtue is not sufficient for salvation, but there is need of another’s also. Let us therefore take much care for our wives, much forethought for our children and our servants, and much for ourselves, and in disciplining our 62.155 selves, and in regulating them, let us beseech God to assist us in the work. If He sees us anxious for this, caring for this, He will assist us; but if we take no account of it, He will not give a hand. For God does not supply his aid to us when we are sleeping, but when we are also laboring ourselves. For a helper is not a helper of one who is idle, but of one who is 62.156 also working himself. But the good God is able through Himself to bring the work to completion, so that we may all be deemed worthy to attain the promised good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and for ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

HOMILY XXII. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in

singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man does, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. 1. So that not only a husband, nor a wife, nor children, but also the virtue of servants contributes to the establishment and protection of a household. For this reason the blessed Paul did not neglect this part either; but he comes to it last, since it is also last in rank. And he says many things to them, not as to children, but much more perfectly; for he does not give them the promise here, but in the future. Knowing, he says, that whatsoever good thing or evil each man does, this he shall receive from the Lord. And he already teaches them to philosophize. For even if they are inferior to children in rank, yet they are greater in spirit. Servants, he says, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh. Immediately he has raised up the grieving soul, immediately he has consoled it. Do not be distressed, he says, that you have less than the wife, and the children; it is only the name of servitude; the mastery is according to the flesh, temporary and brief; for whatever is carnal, is perishable. With fear, he says, and trembling. Do you see that he does not demand the same fear from a wife and from slaves? For there he simply said, But the wife, that she fear her husband; but here with emphasis, With fear, he says, and trembling. In singleness of your heart, as unto Christ. He says this continually. What are you saying, O blessed Paul? He is a brother, he has enjoyed the same things, he belongs to the same body; nay rather, he has become a brother not of his own master, but also of the Son of God, he enjoys all the same things, and you say, Be obedient to masters according to the flesh with fear and trembling? For this reason, he says, I say it. For if I command free men to be subject to one another for the fear of God, just as he said above, Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God; for if the wife

Ὁ γὰρ βοηθὸς οὐ τοῦ ἀργοῦντός ἐστι βοηθὸς, ἀλλὰ τοῦ 62.156 καὶ αὐτοῦ ἐργαζομένου. ∆υνατὸς δὲ ὁ ἀγαθὸς Θεὸς δι' ἑαυτοῦ τὸ ἔργον εἰς τέλος ἀγαγεῖν, ἵνα ἀξιωθῶμεν πάντες ἐπιτυχεῖν τῶν ἐπηγγελμένων ἀγαθῶν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ἁπλότητι καρδίας ὑμῶν, ὡς τῷ Χριστῷ· μὴ κατ' ὀφθαλμοδου λείαν ὡς ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι, ἀλλ' ὡς δοῦλοι τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ποιοῦντες τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκ ψυχῆς, μετ' εὐνοίας δουλεύοντες ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις· εἰδότες ὅτι ἐάν τις ἄνθρω πος ποιήσῃ ἀγαθὸν, τοῦτο κομιεῖται παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου, εἴτε δοῦλος, εἴτε ἐλεύθερος. αʹ. Ὥστε οὐκ ἀνὴρ μόνον, οὔτε γυνὴ, οὔτε παιδία, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἰκετῶν ἀρετὴ συντελεῖ εἰς σύστασιν καὶ πρόστασιν οἰκίας. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ὁ μακάριος Παῦλος οὐδὲ τούτου τοῦ μέρους ἠμέλησεν· ἀλλ' ἔρχεται μὲν ἔσχατον ἐπ' αὐτὸ, ἐπειδὴ καὶ ἔσχατον κεῖται τῷ ἀξιώματι. Πολλὰ δὲ καὶ πρὸς αὐτοὺς διαλέγεται, οὐκέτι ὡς τοῖς παισὶν, ἀλλὰ πολλῷ τελειότερον· οὐ γὰρ ἐνταῦθα δίδωσιν αὐτοῖς τὴν ὑπόσχεσιν, ἀλλ' ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι. Εἰδότες, φησὶν, ὅτι ὃ ἐάν τι ἕκαστος ποιήσῃ ἀγαθὸν ἢ κακὸν, τοῦτο κομιεῖται παρὰ τοῦ Κυρίου. Καὶ φιλοσοφεῖν ἤδη διδάσκει. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ τῷ ἀξιώματι τῶν παίδων εἰσὶν ἐλάττους, ἀλλὰ τῷ φρονήματι μείζους. Οἱ δοῦλοι, φησὶν, ὑπακούετε τοῖς κυρίοις κατὰ σάρκα. Εὐθέως τὴν λελυπημένην ἀνέστησε ψυχὴν, εὐθέως παρεμυθήσατο. Μὴ ἄλγει, φησὶν, ὅτι ἔλαττον ἔχεις καὶ τῆς γυναικὸς, καὶ τῶν παίδων· ὄνομα δουλείας ἐστὶ μόνον· κατὰ σάρκα ἐστὶν ἡ δεσποτεία, πρόσκαιρος καὶ βραχεῖα· ὅπερ γὰρ ἂν ἦ σαρκικὸν, ἐπίκηρόν ἐστι. Μετὰ φόβου, φησὶ, καὶ τρόμου. Ὁρᾷς ὅτι οὐ τὸν αὐτὸν ἀπαιτεῖ παρὰ γυναικὸς καὶ δούλων φόβον; Ἐκεῖ μὲν γὰρ ἁπλῶς εἶπεν· Ἡ δὲ γυνὴ, ἵνα φοβῆται τὸν ἄνδρα· ἐνταῦθα δὲ μετ' ἐπιτάσεως, Μετὰ φόβου, φησὶ, καὶ τρόμου.
