that when we have departed thither, we may not be found betraying the authority which God has given us. For so shall we also obtain the things to come. But if we become evil in this matter, who will entrust to us the greater things? For if we were unable to trample on him who has offended, who is dishonored, who is despised, who lies under our feet, how will the Father give us our paternal inheritance? if we did not overcome one so subdued, what confidence shall we have to enter the paternal house? Tell me, for if you had a son, and he, leaving the well-disposed of the servants, should mingle with those who have grieved you, with those who have been cast out of the paternal house, with those engaged in gambling, and should do this to the end, will he not be disinherited? It is quite clear that he will. So also we, if leaving those who have been well-pleasing and the angels appointed over us, we consort with the devil, shall certainly be disinherited. But may this not happen to any of us, but having undertaken the war against him, and having conquered with the help from above, 62.163 may we become heirs of the kingdom of heaven. If anyone has an enemy, if anyone has been wronged by him, if anyone is enraged, let him gather all that anger, all that severity, and empty it out upon the head of the devil. Here anger is a good thing, here wrath is useful, here bearing a grudge is praiseworthy. For just as among outsiders bearing a grudge is an evil, so here bearing a grudge is a good thing. So if you have failings, unload them here; but if you cannot put them away yourself, do it even with your own members. Has someone struck you? Bear a grudge against the devil, and never break off your enmity toward him. But he has not struck you? Even so bear a grudge, because he has insulted your Master, because he has offended, because he corrupts and wars against the brethren. Be ever an enemy, ever bitter, ever savage; so will he be 62.164 humble, so contemptible, so easily subdued. If we are savage towards him, he will not be savage to us; if we are gentle, then he will be savage; not as it is with our brethren. He is an enemy and a foe both of our life and our salvation, and of his own. If he does not love himself, how will he be able to love us? Let us then draw ourselves up in battle array and strike him, having as a great ally the Lord Jesus Christ, who will be able to make us also unconquerable by his snares, and to deem us worthy of the good things to come; of which may we all be counted worthy to obtain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. HOMILY 23. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth. 1. Having drawn up the

this army, and having roused their eagerness (for both were needed, that they should be drawn up in order, and that their spirit should be roused), and having encouraged them (for this also was needed), he next arms them as well. For the arms are of no use, unless those things have first been set in order, nor unless the spirit of the soldier's soul has been roused. For one must first arm him from within, and then from without. And if this is so in the case of perceptible soldiers, much more in the case of spiritual soldiers; or rather in their case, it is not even possible to arm from without, but everything is from within. He roused and kindled their spirit, he added courage, he set them in good order; next he arms them. But see how he also puts on the arms. Stand therefore, he says. The first point of tactics is to know how to stand well, and much might depend on this. For this reason he discourses much about standing, saying also elsewhere; Stand fast, watch; and again, So stand fast in the Lord; and again, Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall; and

Εἰ δὲ περὶ τοῦτο γινόμεθα κακοὶ, τίς ἡμῖν ἐγχειρίσει τὰ μείζονα; Εἰ γὰρ τὸν προσκεκρουκότα, τὸν ἠτιμωμένον, τὸν καταπεφρονημένον, τὸν ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας κείμενον, πατῆσαι οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν, πῶς ἡμῖν δώσει τὰ πατρῷα ὁ Πατήρ; εἰ τοῦ οὕτως ὑποτεταγμένου οὐ περιεγενόμεθα, ποίαν ἕξομεν παῤῥησίαν εἰς τὴν πατρῴαν εἰσελθεῖν οἰκίαν; Εἰπὲ γάρ μοι· εἴ τινα υἱὸν ἔχοις, ἐκεῖνος δὲ ἀφεὶς τοὺς εὐγνωμονοῦντας τῶν οἰκετῶν, ἀναμιγνύηται τοῖς σε λελυπηκόσι, τοῖς ἐκπεπτωκόσι τῆς πατρῴας οἰκίας, τοῖς περὶ κυβείαν ἠσχολημένοις, καὶ μέχρι τέλους τοῦτο ποιῇ, οὐχὶ ἀποκληρονόμος ἔσται; Εὔδηλον ὅτι. Οὕτω καὶ ἡμεῖς, ἂν ἀφέντες τοὺς εὐηρεστηκότας καὶ τοὺς ἐπιτεταγμένους ἡμῖν ἀγγέλους, ἀναστρεφώμεθα μετὰ τοῦ διαβόλου, πάντως ἀποκληρονόμοι ἐσόμεθα. Ἀλλὰ μὴ γένοιτο τοῦτο μηδένα παθεῖν ἡμῶν, ἀλλὰ τὸν πόλεμον ἀναδεξαμένους τὸν πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ νικήσαντας μετὰ τῆς ἄνωθεν συμμαχίας, 62.163 κληρονόμους γενέσθαι τῆς βασιλείας τῶν οὐρανῶν. Εἴ τις ἐχθρὸν ἔχει, εἴ τις ὑπ' αὐτοῦ ἠδίκηται, εἴ τις ἀγριαίνει, πάντα τὸν θυμὸν ἐκεῖνον, πᾶσαν τὴν χαλεπότητα συναγαγὼν κενούτω κατὰ τῆς τοῦ διαβόλου κεφαλῆς. Ἐνταῦθα ὁ θυμὸς καλὸν, ἐνταῦθα ἡ ὀργὴ χρήσιμον, ἐνταῦθα ἡ μνησικακία ἐπαινετόν. Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐπὶ τῶν ἔξωθεν τοῦτο τὸ μνησικακεῖν κακὸν, οὕτως ἐνταῦθα τὸ μνησικακεῖν ἀγαθόν. Ὥστε εἰ ἐλαττώματα ἔχεις, ἐνταῦθα αὐτὰ ἀποσκεύαζε· εἰ δὲ μὴ δύνασαι αὐτὸς ἀποθέσθαι, κἂν μετὰ τῶν μελῶν τῶν σῶν. Ἔπληξέ σέ τις; Μνησικάκησον τῷ διαβόλῳ, καὶ μηδέποτε καταλύσῃς τὴν ἔχθραν τὴν πρὸς αὐτόν. Ἀλλ' οὐκ ἔπληξε; Καὶ οὕτω μνησικάκει, ὅτι τὸν ∆εσπότην ὕβρισε τὸν σὸν, ὅτι προσέκρουσεν, ὅτι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς λυμαίνεται καὶ πολεμεῖ. Ἀεὶ ἐχθρὸς ἔσο, ἀεὶ πικρὸς, ἀεὶ ἀνήμερος· οὕτω ταπεινὸς ἔσται ἐκεῖ 62.164 νος, οὕτως εὐκαταφρόνητος, οὕτως εὐχείρωτος. Ἂν ἡμεῖς ἀγριαίνωμεν πρὸς αὐτὸν, ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἔσται ἡμῖν ἄγριος· ἂν ἡμεῖς ὦμεν ἐπιεικεῖς, τότε ἐκεῖνος ἄγριος ἔσται· οὐχ ὡς ἐπὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἡμετέρων. Ἐχθρός ἐστι καὶ πολέμιος καὶ τῆς ζωῆς καὶ τῆς σωτηρίας τῆς ἡμετέρας καὶ τῆς αὐτοῦ. Εἰ ἑαυτὸν οὐ φιλεῖ, πῶς ἡμᾶς φιλῆσαι δυνήσεται; Παραταττώμεθα τοίνυν καὶ βάλλωμεν αὐτὸν, ἔχοντες σύμμαχον μέγαν τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν, ὃς δυνήσεται καὶ ἡμᾶς ἀχειρώτους ποιῆσαι ταῖς ἐκείνου πάγαις, καὶ τῶν μελλόντων ἀξιῶσαι ἀγαθῶν· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι δόξα, κράτος, τιμὴ, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. ΟΜΙΛΙΑ ΚΓʹ. Στῆτε οὖν περιζωσάμενοι τὴν ὀσφὺν ὑμῶν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ. αʹ. Συντάξας τὸ

στρατόπεδον τοῦτο, καὶ διεγείρας αὐτῶν τὴν προθυμίαν (ἀμφοτέρων γὰρ ἔδει, καὶ τοῦ συντεταγμένους εἶναι, καὶ τοῦ θυμὸν αὐτῶν διεγερθῆναι), καὶ παραθαρσύνας αὐτοὺς (καὶ γὰρ καὶ τούτου ἔδει), λοιπὸν αὐτοὺς καὶ καθοπλίζει. Οὐδὲν γὰρ τῶν ὅπλων ὄφελος, ἐκείνων πρότερον μὴ διατεταγμένων, μηδὲ τοῦ θυμοῦ διεγερθέντος τῆς τοῦ στρατιώτου ψυχῆς. ∆εῖ γὰρ πρότερον αὐτὸν ἔνδοθεν ὁπλίζειν, καὶ τότε ἔξωθεν. Εἰ δὲ ἐπὶ τῶν αἰσθητῶν τοῦτο, πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐπὶ τῶν νοητῶν στρατιωτῶν· μᾶλλον δὲ ἐπὶ τούτων οὐδὲ ἔστιν ἔξωθεν ὁπλίσασθαι, ἀλλὰ πάντα ἔνδοθεν. ∆ιήγειρε τὸν θυμὸν καὶ ἀνέκαυσε, προσέθηκε τὸ θάρσος, ἔστησεν αὐτοὺς εὐτάκτως· λοιπὸν καθοπλίζει. Ἀλλ' ὅρα πῶς καὶ περιτίθησι τὰ ὅπλα. Στῆτε οὖν, φησί. Πρῶτον τῶν τακτικῶν εἶδος, τὸ εἰδέναι ἑστάναι καλῶς, καὶ πολλὰ παρὰ τοῦτο γένοιτο ἄν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο πολλὰ περὶ τοῦ στῆναι διαλέγεται, καὶ ἑτέρωθι λέγων· Στῆτε, γρηγορεῖτε· καὶ πάλιν, Οὕτω στήκετε ἐν Κυρίῳ· καὶ πάλιν, Ὁ δοκῶν ἑστάναι, βλεπέτω μὴ πέσῃ· καὶ
