receive the helmet, he says, of salvation; that is, of your salvation.
For he fences them around, as one leading them out to war.
And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
He either means the Spirit, or by the spiritual sword.
For by this all things are cut, by this all things are hewn, and we cut off the head of the dragon by this.
With all prayer and supplication, he says, praying at all times in the Spirit, and in this very thing being watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth, with boldness to make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Just as the word of God has power over all things, so also does the one who has the spiritual gift.
For the word of God, he says, is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.
But see the understanding of this blessed man.
He has armed them with all security; then he teaches how one must call upon the King, so that he may stretch out his hand: With all prayer, he says, and supplication praying at all times in the Spirit.
For it is possible not to pray in the spirit, when one babbles.
And in this, he says, being watchful, that is, being sober.
For such must be the one who is armed, who stands beside the King, watchful and sober.
With all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth.
What do you say, O blessed Paul? Do you have need of the disciples?
And well did he say, In opening my mouth.
So he did not prepare what he was going to say, but as Christ said: When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how or what you are to speak; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to speak. Thus he did everything by faith, everything by grace.
With boldness, he says, to make known the mystery of the Gospel.
That is, that I may make my defense as I ought.
You are wearing a chain, and you need others? 62.170
Yes, he says; since Peter also wore a chain, but nevertheless earnest prayer was made for him.
For which I am an ambassador in chains, that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
That is, that I may answer with boldness, with courage, with much understanding.
But that you also may know my affairs, what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you.
2. Since he mentioned bonds, he leaves something for Tychicus to discuss on his own account.
For what concerned doctrines and exhortation, he made known through the Epistle; but what was a mere report, he entrusted to the one who brought the Epistle.
Therefore he added: That you may know our affairs, that is, that you may learn.
This showed both his love for them, and theirs for him.
Whom I have sent, he says, to you for this very purpose, that you may know our affairs, and that he may comfort your hearts.
He does not say this simply, but having previously said, "Having put on" and "Having girded yourselves," which is proof of always approaching and being unceasing.
For hear the Prophet saying: Let it be to him as a garment which he puts on, and as a belt with which he is girded continually.
And the Prophet says that God has put on the breastplate of righteousness, by this teaching us, that one must have these things always, and not for a short time; for there is always need of war.
And another elsewhere. For the righteous man, he says, is confident as a lion.
For it is not possible for one so armed to fear the battle-line, but to leap into the midst of the enemies.
And Isaiah, How beautiful, he says, are the feet of those who preach peace.
Who would not run, who would not minister in such a matter, so as to preach peace, and the peace of God to men, a peace for which men have labored nothing, but for which God has wrought everything?
But what is the preparation of the Gospel, let us hear John saying: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
But he said these things on account of baptism; but since there is need of another preparation after baptism, this man shows it, and says: In the preparation of the Gospel of peace;
