to grant her prayer? For did He not know the woman's desire even before her request? But if He had granted it before her request, the woman's eagerness would not have been shown, her virtue would not have become manifest, she would not have obtained so great a reward. So that the delay is not of envy nor of malice, but of provident care. 4. When, then, you hear the Scripture saying, "That He had shut up her womb," and "that her rival provoked her," consider that it wishes to show the woman's philosophy. For observe: she had her husband devoted to her; for he said to her, "Am I not better to you than ten sons?" And her rival, it says, provoked her; that is, she reproached her, she triumphed over her; and she never retaliated against her, nor prayed against her, nor said, "Since my rival reproaches me, avenge me." The other had children, but this one had the love of her husband as a counterbalance. With this, indeed, he also comforted her, saying, "Am I not better to you than ten sons?" But let us again see the woman's philosophy. And Eli, it says, took her for a drunken woman. But see what she says to him: "Count not your handmaid for a daughter of ruin, for out of the abundance of my complaint have I been poured out until now." This is truly of a contrite heart, when we are not angry with those who insult us, when we are not vexed, when we make our defense. Nothing so makes the heart philosophical as affliction; nothing is so sweet a thing as mourning according to God. "Out of the abundance," she says, "of my complaint have I been poured out until now." Let us all imitate her. Hear, all you who are barren, hear, all you who desire children, hear, both men and women; for men too often contributed. For hear the Scripture saying, "And Isaac entreated for Rebecca his wife, because she was barren." For prayer is very powerful. With all, he says, perseverance and supplication for all the saints, and for me, putting himself last. What are you doing, O blessed Paul, putting yourself last? Yes, he says, "That utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in a chain." Where are you an ambassador? To men, he says. Alas for the philanthropy of God! He sent ambassadors from the heavens on behalf of 62.174 Himself, for peace, and men took them and bound them, and did not even respect the common law, that an ambassador never suffers any evil. But nevertheless, I am an ambassador in a chain. The chain is upon me, silencing my boldness, but your prayer opens my mouth, that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak; that is, that I may say all the things I was sent to say. But that you also may know my affairs, how I do, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make all things known to you. If he is faithful, he will lie about nothing, but will tell the truth about everything. Whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you may know our affairs, and that he may comfort your hearts. Alas, how great is the love! That it may not be possible, he says, for those who wish to terrify you; for it is likely that they are in dire straits; for the phrase, "He will comfort your hearts," hints at this. That he may not let them, he says, fall away. Peace to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. He prays for them peace and love with faith. He spoke well; for he wishes them not simply to have the name of love, and to mix themselves with those of a different faith. Or this, or that he says, so that they may also have faith, so as to be confident also concerning the things to come. The peace is towards God, and the love. For if there is peace, there will also be love; if love, there will also be peace. With faith. For there is no benefit of love without faith; or rather, love could not exist otherwise. And grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in incorruption. Amen. Here he made a distinction, putting peace by itself, and grace. In incorruption, he says, Amen. What is, "In incorruption"? Either in propriety, or for the sake of incorruptible things; for example, not in wealth, nor in glory, but in those incorruptible things. The "in" is "through." Through incorruption, he says; that is, through virtue. For all sin is corruption; and

Ὥστε ἡ ἀναβολὴ, οὐχὶ φθόνου ἐστὶν οὐδὲ βασκανίας, ἀλλὰ κηδεμονίας. δʹ. Ὅταν οὖν ἀκούσῃς τῆς Γραφῆς λεγούσης, Ὅτι ἀπέκλεισε τὰ περὶ τὴν μήτραν αὐτῆς, καὶ ὅτι παρώργιζεν αὐτὴν ἡ ἀντίζηλος αὐτῆς, ἐννόησον ὅτι τὴν φιλοσοφίαν δεῖξαι βούλεται τῆς γυναικός. Τί ποιεῖς, ὦ μακάριε Παῦλε, ἑαυτὸν ἔσχατον τιθείς; Ναὶ, φησὶν, Ἵνα μοι δοθῇ λόγος ἐν ἀνοίξει τοῦ στόματός μου, ἐν παῤῥησίᾳ γνωρίσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου, ὑπὲρ οὗ πρεσβεύω ἐν ἁλύσει. Ποῦ πρεσβεύεις; Πρὸς ἀνθρώπους, φησί. Βαβαὶ τῆς φιλανθρωπίας τοῦ Θεοῦ! Ἔπεμψε πρεσβεύοντας ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν ὑπὲρ 62.174 αὐτοῦ, ὑπὲρ εἰρήνης, καὶ λαβόντες ἔδησαν αὐτοὺς οἱ ἄνθρωποι, καὶ οὐδὲ τὸν κοινὸν νόμον ᾐδέσθησαν, ὅτι ὁ πρεσβεύων οὐδέποτε πάσχει τι κακόν. Ἀλλ' ὅμως ἐγὼ πρεσβεύω ἐν ἁλύσει. Ἡ ἅλυσις ἐπίκειται τὴν παῤῥησίαν ἐπιστομίζουσα, ἀλλ' ἡ εὐχὴ ἡ ὑμετέρα ἀνοίγει μου τὸ στόμα, ἵνα ἐν αὐτῷ παῤῥησιάσωμαι, ὡς δεῖ με λαλῆσαι· τουτέστιν, Ἵνα πάντα ἃ ἐπέμφθην εἰπεῖν, εἴπω. Ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε καὶ ὑμεῖς τὰ κατ' ἐμὲ, τί πράσσω, πάντα ὑμῖν γνωρίσει Τυχικὸς ὁ ἀγαπητὸς ἀδελφὸς καὶ πιστὸς διάκονος ἐν Κυρίῳ. Εἰ πιστὸς, οὐδὲν ψεύσεται, ἀλλὰ πάντα ἀληθεύσει. Καλῶς εἶπε· βούλεται γὰρ μὴ ἁπλῶς ἔχειν τὸν τῆς ἀγάπης λόγον, καὶ τοῖς ἑτεροπίστοις ἑαυτοὺς ἀναμιγνύναι. Ἢ τοῦτο, ἢ ἐκεῖνό φησιν, ὥστε καὶ πίστιν αὐτοὺς ἔχειν, ὥστε θαῤῥεῖν καὶ περὶ τῶν μελλόντων. Ἡ εἰρήνη πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη. Ἐὰν γὰρ εἰρήνη ᾖ, καὶ ἀγάπη ἔσται· ἂν ἀγάπη, καὶ εἰρήνη ἔσται. Μετὰ πίστεως. Οὐδὲν γὰρ ὄφελος ἀγάπης, πίστεως χωρίς· μᾶλλον δὲ οὐδ' ἂν γένοιτο ἀγάπη ἑτέρως. Καὶ χάρις μετὰ πάντων τῶν ἀγαπώντων τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ. Ἀμήν. Ἐνταῦθα διεῖλε, τὴν εἰρήνην κατ' ἰδίαν θεὶς, καὶ τὴν χάριν. Ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ, φησὶν, Ἀμήν.
