reaping the fruit of their hands." Saying these and similar things, he urged them to work, performing the customary divine liturgies everywhere at the proper time, and dedicating the time in between to labor. 10.4 And not least did he care for the service of strangers, entrusting this providence to men adorned with gentleness and moderation of spirit and possessing love for their neighbor. He himself supervised all things, investigating whether each was being carried out according to the established rules. From this he became so renowned that sailors, even when more than a thousand stades distant, would call upon the God of Theodosius in times of danger and by the name of Theodosius would calm the surging of the sea. 10.5 Even bold and savage enemies revered him, those who had plundered and enslaved most of the east. For who of those living in our inhabited world has not heard of the evils that occurred at that time at the hands of those formerly called Solymi, but now Isaurians? But nevertheless, though they spared neither city nor village, but plundered and gave to the fire all that they were able to capture, they revered that philosophy and, asking only for bread and promising prayers, they left that ascetic dwelling unharmed; and this they did not once, but twice. 10.6 Nevertheless, the leaders of the churches, fearing lest the devil, by instilling in those barbarians a love of money, might arrange for that great luminary to be captured by the spear—for it was likely that a very large ransom would be sent to them for him from all sides by all who honored divine things—having urged him, they persuade him to go to Antioch. For they had already taken two leaders of the churches captive and had deemed them worthy of every care; but after receiving fourteen thousand gold pieces for both of them, they thus permitted them to return wherever they wished. When he arrived at Antioch, he dwelt in a lodging situated by the river, and he drew to himself all who knew how to harvest such things. 10.7 But carried away by the flow of my narrative, I have omitted to relate a miracle performed by this divine man, which will perhaps seem incredible to many, yet it remains to this day, bearing witness to the account and showing what grace and boldness this wonderful man obtained from God. A precipitous rock overhangs the place of contemplation which he himself had built; previously it was waterless and completely dry. On this he made an aqueduct leading from the summit to the monastery, as if having the flow of the waters under his control. But filled with confidence in God and being bold, as was natural, having the Master as benevolent and possessing unwavering faith, having risen at night, he went up to the top of the aqueduct before his companions arose for the customary prayers, and having supplicated God through prayer, trusting in him who does the will of those who fear him, with the staff on which he happened to be leaning, he struck the rock; and it, being broken, gushed forth water like a river; and coming into the monastery through the aqueduct and richly supplying every need, it flows out into the adjacent sea and shows, even to this day, the Mosaic grace of the great Theodosius at work. And this alone is sufficient to show the man's boldness before God. 10.8 And having lived on for a short time, he passed over to the angelic choir. And the holy body was carried through the middle of the city as if with certain golden crowns on the iron

Οὕτω δὲ πολυθρύλητος ἐντεῦθεν ἐγένετο ὡς τοὺς ναυτιλ λομένους καὶ πλείονας ἢ χιλίους ἀφεστῶτας σταδίους, τὸν Θεοδοσίου καλεῖν ἐν τοῖς κινδύνοις θεὸν καὶ τῇ Θεοδοσίου προσηγορίᾳ κατακοιμίζειν τῆς θαλάττης τὴν ζάλην. 10.5 Τοῦτον ᾐδέσθησαν καὶ πολέμιοι θρασεῖς καὶ ἀνήμεροι οἱ τῆς ἕω τὸ πλεῖστον ληϊσάμενοί τε καὶ ἐξανδραποδισάμενοι. Τίς γὰρ τῶν τὴν καθ' ἡμᾶς οἰκουμένην οἰκούντων ἀνήκοος τῶν κατ' ἐκεῖνον τὸν καιρὸν συμβεβηκότων κακῶν ὑπὸ τῶν πάλαι μὲν Σολύμων, νῦν δὲ Ἰσαύρων ὀνομαζομένων; Ἀλλ' ὅμως μὴ πόλεως, μὴ κώμης ἐκεῖνοι φεισάμενοι, ἀλλὰ πάσας ὅσας ἑλεῖν ἠδυνήθησαν ληϊσάμενοι καὶ πυρὶ παραδόντες, ἐκείνην τὴν φιλοσοφίαν ᾐδέσθησαν καὶ ἄρτους μόνους αἰτήσαντες καὶ εὐχὰς ἐπαγγείλαντες, ἀλώβητον τὸ ἀσκητικὸν ἐκεῖνο κατέλιπον καταγώγιον καὶ τοῦτο οὐχ ἅπαξ, ἀλλὰ καὶ δὶς πεποιήκασιν. 10.6 ∆είσαντες δ' ὅμως τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν οἱ προέδροι μὴ χρημάτων ἔρωτα τοῖς βαρβάροις ἐκείνοις ἐμβαλὼν ὁ διά βολος δοριάλωτον γενέσθαι παρασκευάσῃ τὸν μέγαν ἐκεῖνον φωστῆρα-καὶ γὰρ ἦν εἰκὸς λύτρα πάμπολλα πανταχόθεν ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ παρὰ πάντων τῶν τὰ θεῖα τιμώντων πεμφθή σεσθαι αὐτοῖς-, παρακαλέσαντες πείθουσι τὴν Ἀντιόχου καταλαβεῖν. Ἤδη γὰρ δύο τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν προέδρους αἰχμαλώτους εἰλήφασι καὶ θεραπείας μὲν ἁπάσης ἠξίωσαν· τετρακισχιλίους δὲ καὶ μυρίους ὑπὲρ ἀμφοτέρων δεξάμενοι χρυσοῦς, οὕτως ἐπέτρεψαν ἐπανελθεῖν ὅποι βούλοιντο. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ εἰς τὴν Ἀντιόχου ἀφίκετο, ᾤκησε μὲν καταγώγιον τῷ ποταμῷ παρακείμενον, πάντας δὲ πρὸς ἑαυτὸν εἵλκυσε τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα τρυγᾶν ἐπισταμένους. 10.7 Ὑπὸ δὲ τῆς τοῦ λόγου ῥύμης ἑλκόμενος, παρῆκα διηγήσασθαι θαῦμα ὑπὸ τοῦ θεσπεσίου τούτου γενόμενον, ὃ τάχα τοῖς πολλοῖς καὶ ἄπιστον εἶναι δόξει, διαμένει μέντοι μέχρι καὶ νῦν μαρτυροῦν τῷ λόγῳ καὶ δεικνῦον οἵας ἔτυχεν ὁ θαυμάσιος οὗτος ἀνὴρ παρὰ τῷ θεῷ χάριτός τε καὶ παρρησίας. Κρημνώδης τις πέτρα ὑπέρκειται τοῦ φροντιστηρίου οὗπερ αὐτὸς ἐδείματο· ἄνικμος δὲ καὶ ξηρὰ παντελῶς ὑπῆρχε τὸ πρότερον. Ἐν ταύτῃ ὑδραγώγιον ἐποίησεν ἀπὸ τῆς κορυφῆς ἐπὶ τὸ μοναστήριον φερόμενον ὥσπερ ὑπὸ χεῖρα ἔχων τῶν ὑδάτων τὴν φοράν. Πεποιθήσεως δὲ γέμων εἰς θεὸν καὶ θαρρῶν, ὡς εἰκός, εὐμενῆ τὸν δεσπότην κεκτη μένος καὶ πίστιν ἔχων ἀδίστακτον, νυκτὸς διεγερθεὶς ἄνεισιν ἐπὶ τὴν ἄκραν τοῦ ὑδραγωγοῦ πρὶν τοὺς θιασώτας ἐπὶ τὰς συνήθεις εὐχὰς διαναστῆναι καὶ διὰ προσευχῆς τὸν θεὸν ἱκετεύσας, θαρρῶν τῷ ποιοῦντι τὸ θέλημα τῶν φοβουμένων αὐτὸν τῇ ῥάβδῳ ἐν ᾗ σκηρι πτόμενος ἐτύγχανεν, ἔτυψε τὴν πέτραν· ἡ δὲ ῥαγεῖσα ὕδωρ ποτα μηδὸν ἀνέβλυσε· καὶ εἴσω τοῦ μοναστηρίου διὰ τοῦ ὑδραγωγοῦ γενόμενον καὶ εἰς πᾶσαν χρείαν πλουσίως χορηγοῦν, εἰς τὴν παρα κειμένην θάλατταν ἐκκρίνεται καὶ δείκνυται μέχρι δεῦρο τοῦ μεγάλου Θεοδοσίου ἡ μωσαϊκὴ χάρις ἐνεργοῦσα. Ἀπόχρη δὲ καὶ τοῦτο μόνον δεῖξαι τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τὴν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν παρρησίαν. 10.8 Ὀλίγον δὲ ἐπιβιώσας χρόνον πρὸς τὴν ἀγγελικὴν μετέστη χορείαν. ∆ιὰ δὲ μέσου τοῦ ἄστεως τὸ σῶμα τὸ ἱερὸν ἐφέρετο οἷόν τισι στεφάνοις χρυσοῖς τῷ σιδήρῳ
