being adorned by that, with everyone leading the way, including those entrusted with the great offices. And there was strife and contention around the bier, with everyone hurrying to carry it and desiring the blessing from it. Being carried thus, he is laid to rest in the shrine of the holy martyrs, having become both a fellow-dweller and one who shares the same roof with Julian, the victorious champion of piety. And a tomb received him which also received that divine and blessed Aphraates. 10.9 The admirable Helladius succeeded to the leadership of the flock; he spent sixty years in those places, and then from God received the see of the Cilicians, neither abandoning his former philosophy, but adding daily to those labors the toils of the high priesthood. The blessed Romulus, having become a disciple of this man, was also shown to be the leader of a very great flock. And indeed his community has remained to this day, holding to the same way of life. And next to the monastery lies a village called Marato in Syriac. And I, having made this the end of this narrative, pray to obtain the blessing from it also. 11.t ROMANUS 11.1 The great Theodosius, then, having set out from Antioch and practiced asceticism in the Rhosian mountains, returned to the city of Antioch and thus met the end of his life. But the divine Romanus, born and first raised in Rhosus, undertook the contests of virtue in Antioch, living outside the city walls at the foot of the mountain, and passing his whole life in another's small dwelling. And he continued until old age using neither fire nor receiving lamplight. For his food was bread and salt, and his drink spring water; his hair was similar to that of the great Theodosius, and his clothing and iron likewise. 11.2 And this man excelled in simplicity of character, gentleness of ways, and modesty of mind. And because of these things he sent forth the radiance of divine grace. "For on whom," he says, "shall I look, but on him who is meek and quiet and trembles at my words?" And again he said to his own disciples: "Learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." And again: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." And of Moses the lawgiver this was the mark of his achievements: "For Moses," it says, "was very meek, above all the men who were on the face of the earth." This also the all-holy Spirit testified to the prophet David: "Remember, O Lord," it says, "David and all his meekness." And concerning the patriarch Jacob we have learned that he was a guileless man, dwelling in a house. 11.3 Having gathered these virtues from those divine meadows like a bee, he prepared the honey of true philosophy. But he did not enjoy his labors alone; but from him the sweetest streams flowed forth even to those outside. And to those who came to him, using a gentle and sweet voice, he offered many exhortations concerning brotherly love, and many concerning concord and peace; and by merely being seen he made many lovers of divine things. For who would not have been struck with admiration, seeing an old man with a worn out body, letting his hair grow long, choosing to bear as much iron as possible, using a garment of hair, and partaking of food only sufficient to prevent death from starvation? 11.4 In addition to the magnitude and multitude of his labors, the grace that blossomed upon him also persuaded all to admire and honor him. Ἐγὼ δὲ τοῦδε τοῦ διηγήματος τοῦτο ποιησάμενος πέρας, ἱκετεύω καὶ τῆς ἐντεῦθεν τυχεῖν εὐλογίας. 11.t ΡΩΜΑΝΟΣ 11.1 Ὁ μὲν οὖν μέγας Θεοδόσιος, ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀντιοχέων ὁρμώμενος καὶ ἐν τοῖς ῥωσικοῖς ἀγωνισάμενος ὄρεσιν, εἰς τὴν Ἀντιόχου πόλιν ἐπανελθών, οὕτω τοῦ βίου τὸ τέλος ἐδέξατο. Ῥωμανὸς δὲ ὁ θεῖος, ἐν τῇ Ῥώσῳ καὶ τεχθεὶς καὶ τὰ πρῶτα τραφεὶς, ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ τοὺς τῆς ἀρετῆς ὑπεδέξατο ἄθλους, ἔξω μὲν τῶν τοῦ ἄστεως περιβόλων παρὰ τὴν ὑπώρειαν ἐσκηνωμένος, ἐν ἀλλοτρίῳ δὲ οἰκιδίῳ καὶ τούτῳ σμικρῷ πάντα τὸν χρόνον διαβιώσας. ∆ιετέλεσε δὲ μέχρι γήρως μήτε πυρὶ χρησάμενος, μήτε λυχνιαῖον δεξάμενος φῶς. Τροφὴ γὰρ ἦν αὐτῷ ἄρτος καὶ ἅλες, πόμα δὲ τὸ κρηναῖον νᾶμα, κόμη δὲ τῷ μεγάλῳ Θεοδοσίῳ παραπλησία καὶ ἐσθὴς δὲ καὶ σίδηρος ὡσαύτως. 11.2 Ἐπλεονέκτει δὲ οὗτος ἤθους ἁπλότητι καὶ πρᾳότητι τρόπων καὶ φρονήματος μετριότητι. Καὶ τούτων εἵνεκα τῆς θείας χάριτος ἠφίει τὴν αἴγλην. "Ἐπὶ τίνα γάρ, φησίν, ἐπιβλέψω, ἀλλ' ἢ ἐπὶ τὸν πρᾷον καὶ ἡσύχιον καὶ τρέμοντά μου τοὺς λόγους;" Καὶ τοῖς ἰδίοις δὲ πάλιν ἔλεγε μαθηταῖς· "Μάθετε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, ὅτι πρᾷός εἰμι καὶ ταπεινὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ εὑρήσετε ἀνάπαυσιν ταῖς ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν." Καὶ πάλιν· "Μακάριοι οἱ πραεῖς ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσι τὴν γῆν." Καὶ Μωϋσέως δὲ τοῦ νομοθέτου τοῦτο ἦν τὸ τῶν κατορ θωμάτων ἐπίσημον· "Ἦν γάρ, φησί, Μωϋσῆς πρᾳότατος παρὰ πάντας ἀνθρώπους τοὺς ὄντας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς". Τοῦτο καὶ τῷ προφήτῃ ∆αβὶδ τὸ πανάγιον ἐμαρτύρησε πνεῦμα· "Μνήσθητι γάρ, φησιν, κύριε, τοῦ ∆αβὶδ καὶ πάσης τῆς πρᾳότητος αὐτοῦ". Καὶ περὶ τοῦ πατριάρχου Ἰακὼβ μεμαθήκαμεν ὅτι ἄπλαστος ἦν, οἰκῶν οἰκίαν. 11.3 Ταύτας δίκην μελίττης ἐκ τῶν θείων ἐκείνων λειμώνων τὰς ἀρετὰς συναθροίσας τὸ τῆς ἀληθοῦς φιλοσοφίας κατε σκεύασε μέλι. Ἀλλ' οὐ μόνος τῶν πόνων ἀπέλαυσε· προ εχεῖτο δὲ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἔξω τὰ ἥδιστα νάματα. Καὶ τοῖς πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀφικνουμένοις τῇ πραείᾳ καὶ γλυκείᾳ κεχρημένος φωνῇ, πολλὰς μὲν περὶ φιλαδελφίας, πολλὰς δὲ περὶ ὁμονοίας τε καὶ εἰρήνης προσέφερε παραινέσεις· πολλοὺς δὲ τῶν θείων καὶ μόνον ὁρώμενος ἀπέφηνεν ἐραστάς. Τίς γὰρ οὐκ ἂν ὑπερηγάσθη πρεσβύτην θεώμενος τὸ σῶμα τετρυχωμένον καὶ κόμης πολλῆς ἀνεχόμενον καὶ σίδηρον ὅτι πλεῖστον φέρειν αἱρούμενον καὶ τῷ ἐκ τριχῶν ἐσθήματι κεχρημένον καὶ τροφῆς ἀπολαύοντα κωλῦσαι μόνον ἀπο χρώσης τὸν ἐκ λιμοῦ θάνατον; 11.4 Πρὸς δὲ τῷ μεγέθει καὶ τῷ πλήθει τῶν πόνων καὶ ἡ ἐπανθοῦσα χάρις θαυμάζειν αὐτὸν ἅπαντας καὶ γεραίρειν ἀνέπειθε.
