I have a judgment, by this he is most especially punished. For if there was no one teaching, it was possible to take refuge in these things; but if there is, no longer. See, then, how he deprives the Jews of an excuse, saying: If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin. And again Paul: But I say, have they not heard? Yes, indeed, their sound went out into all the earth. For then there is an excuse, when there is no one speaking; but when the watchman sits and has this work, there is no longer an excuse. Rather, Christ did not wish us to look only at those pillars, but to be pillars ourselves. But since we have made ourselves unworthy of these writings, let us at least look to those. For just as pillars threaten others, but are not themselves liable, just as the laws are not; so also the blessed apostles. And see; this pillar does not stand in one place, but the writings are carried about everywhere. Even if you go to the Indians, you will hear of these things; even if to Spain, even to the very ends of the earth, no one happens to be unheard, unless it be through their own indifference. Do not be annoyed, then, but pay attention to what is said; so that you may be able to take hold of the works of virtue, and to obtain the eternal good things, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. 60.55 HOMILY 6. Men of Israel, hear my words
these. 1. The saying is not flattery; but since he had assailed them vehemently, he now relaxes his hold on them, and seasonably reminds them of David. And again he begins from a prelude; so that they might not be disturbed, since he was about to remind them of Jesus. For above they would not have been disturbed hearing the prophet, but the name of Jesus would immediately have startled them. And he did not say, Be persuaded, but, Hear, which was inoffensive. And see how he says nothing of the lofty things, but begins from the very humble. Jesus, he says, the Nazarene. Immediately he states his country, which seemed to be lowly. And for the time being he says nothing great about him, nor such as one would have said about a prophet. Jesus, he says, the Nazarene, a man approved of God among you. See how great a thing this was, to say that he was sent from God. For he himself, and John, and the apostles, took pains to show this above and below. For hear John saying: He told me, upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him 60.56, this is he. But Christ himself does this even with hyperbole, saying: I have not come of myself, he sent me. And everywhere in the Scriptures this is what is especially striven for. For this reason also this saint, the leader of the blessed choir, the lover of Christ, the vehement disciple, he who was entrusted with the keys of the heavens, he who received the spiritual revelation, having calmed them with fear, and shown them to have been deemed worthy of great things, and having made them trustworthy, then he also discourses concerning him. Oh! what a thing he dared to say among those who had murdered him, that he was risen. And he does not say that he rose immediately, but that he has come to you from God. And this is clear from what he did. He no longer says, that he himself, but that God through him, so that by moderation he might the more draw them to him, and he calls them witnesses, and says: A man approved of God among you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know. Then, falling upon that accursed audacity of theirs, see how he tries to absolve them of the charge; for even if it was determined, nevertheless they were murderers. Καὶ πάλιν ὁ Παῦλος· Ἀλλὰ λέγω, μὴ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; Μενοῦν γε εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν ὁ φθόγγος αὐτῶν. Τότε γὰρ συγγνώμη ἐστὶν, ὅταν μηδεὶς ᾖ ὁ λέγων· ὅταν δὲ ὁ σκοπὸς κάθηται καὶ τοῦτο ἔχῃ ἔργον, οὐκ ἔτι συγγνώμη. Μᾶλλον δὲ οὐκ ἐβούλετο ὁ Χριστὸς εἰς ἐκείνας τὰς στήλας ἐνορᾷν ἡμᾶς μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτοὺς εἶναι στήλας. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἀναξίους ἑαυτοὺς τῶν γραμμάτων τούτων κατεστήσαμεν, κἂν εἰς ἐκείνας ἴδωμεν. Καθάπερ γὰρ αἱ στῆλαι ἑτέροις ἀπειλοῦσιν, αὐταὶ δὲ οὐκ εἰσὶν ὑπεύθυνοι, ὥσπερ οὐδὲ οἱ νόμοι· οὕτω καὶ οἱ μακάριοι ἀπόστολοι. ἀνίησιν αὐτοὺς λοιπὸν, καὶ ἀναμιμνήσκει τοῦ ∆αυῒδ εὐκαίρως. Καὶ πάλιν ἀπὸ προοιμίου ἄρχεται· ἵνα μὴ θορυβηθῶσιν, ἐπειδὴ ἔμελλεν αὐτοὺς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἀναμιμνήσκειν. Καὶ πανταχοῦ τῶν Γραφῶν τοῦτο μάλιστά ἐστι τὸ σπουδαζόμενον. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἅγιος οὗτος ὁ κορυφαῖος τοῦ μακαρίου χοροῦ, ὁ ἐραστὴς τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ σφοδρὸς μαθητὴς, ὁ τὰς κλεῖς πιστευθεὶς τῶν οὐρανῶν, ὁ τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν δεξάμενος τὴν πνευματικὴν, καταστείλας αὐτοὺς τῷ φόβῳ, καὶ δείξας μεγάλων ἠξιωμένους, καὶ ποιήσας ἀξιοπίστους, τότε καὶ περὶ ἐκείνου διαλέγεται. Βαβαὶ, οἷον ἐτόλμησε μεταξὺ τῶν φονευσάντων εἰπεῖν, ὅτι ἀνέστη. Καὶ οὐ λέγει, ὅτι ἀνέστη εὐθέως, ἀλλ' ὅτι ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς ἥκει. Τοῦτο δὲ δῆλον οἷς ἐποίησεν. Οὐκέτι λέγει, ὅτι αὐτὸς, ἀλλ' ὅτι δι' αὐτοῦ ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα μᾶλλον τῷ μετριάζειν ἐφελκύσηται, ἐφ' ᾧ αὐτοὺς, καὶ καλεῖ μάρτυρας, καί φησιν· Ἄνδρα ἀποδεδειγμένον ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς δυνάμεσι καὶ τέρασι καὶ σημείοις οἷς ἐποίησε δι' αὐτοῦ ὁ Θεὸς ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν, καθὼς καὶ αὐτοὶ οἴδατε. Εἶτα ἐμπεσὼν εἰς τὸ τόλμημα αὐτῶν τὸ ἐναγὲς ἐκεῖνο, ὅρα πῶς πειρᾶται αὐτοὺς ἀπαλλάξαι τοῦ ἐγκλήματος· εἰ γὰρ καὶ ὡρισμένον ἦν, ὅμως ἀνδροφόνοι ἦσαν.
