to him. Either they were not yet perfect, or because he was gracious and revered; for which reason they also mourn him. At the same time this shows that they were also human, not only the fear, but also the grief and the mourning. 2. For who would not have wept, seeing that gentle one, the lamb, stoned and lying dead? The evangelist has delivered a sufficient epitaph for him, saying, And kneeling down, and crying with a loud voice. And they made great lamentation over him. But let us look at what was said above: Being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened. And they stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord. And yet where are these things worthy of accusation? But nevertheless, having taken him who worked such signs by his word, who prevailed over all by his word, who discoursed on such things, just as they wanted, they thus fulfilled their own wrath. But the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. See how accurately he relates the things concerning Paul, that he might show you the work of God which was done upon him after these things. Meanwhile, not only does he not believe, but he also pelts him with the myriad hands of the murderers; for which reason, making this clear, he says, But Saul was consenting to his death 60.143. But this blessed one does not pray simply, but with attention. For, he says, kneeling down. Whence his death also became divine; for until this time souls were permitted to be in Hades. They were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria. Thenceforth, they who had heard, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, mingle fearlessly with Samaria. Except the apostles, he says; showing that, wishing also by this to win over the Jews, they did not leave the city, or also to become a cause of courage to others. But Saul was ravaging the Church, entering into houses, and dragging off men and women, he committed them to prison. Great was the madness, that he was also alone, that he also entered into houses; so he gave his soul for the law. Dragging, he says, men and women. See both the boldness, and the insolence, and the madness. All who fell into his hands he treated with countless evils, having become bolder from this slaughter. Therefore those who were scattered went about preaching the word. But Philip went down to a city of Samaria and proclaimed Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For from many of those who had unclean spirits, they came out, crying with a loud voice; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city. But there was a man named Simon, who had previously been in the city, practicing magic and amazing the nation of Samaria, saying that he himself was someone great; to whom they all paid attention, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. Behold for me also another temptation, that of Simon. But the crowds, he says, paid attention to him, because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. And Simon himself also believed, and after being baptized, he continued with Philip. And seeing great powers and signs being done, he was amazed. Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John; who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet fallen upon any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. But when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying; Give me also this authority, that on whomever I lay my hands, he may receive

Πολλῶν γὰρ ἐχόντων πνεύματα ἀκάθαρτα, βοῶντα φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐξήρχετο· πολλοὶ δὲ καὶ παραλελυμένοι καὶ χωλοὶ ἐθεραπεύθησαν. Καὶ ἐγένετο χαρὰ μεγάλη ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ. Ἀνὴρ δέ τις ὀνόματι Σίμων προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει, μαγεύων, καὶ ἐξιστῶν τὸ ἔθνος τῆς Σαμαρείας, λέγων εἶναί τινα ἑαυτὸν μέγαν· ᾧ προσεῖχον πάντες ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου, λέγοντες· Οὗτός ἐστιν ἡ δύναμις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ μεγάλη. Ἴδε μοι καὶ ἕτερον πειρασμὸν τὸν τοῦ Σίμωνος. Προσεῖχον δὲ αὐτῷ, φησὶ, οἱ ὄχλοι, διὰ τὸ ἱκανῷ χρόνῳ ταῖς μαγείαις ἐξεστηκέναι αὐτούς. Ὅτε δὲ ἐπίστευσαν τῷ Φιλίππῳ εὐαγγελιζομένῳ τὰ περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ὀνόματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐβαπτίζοντο ἄνδρες τε καὶ γυναῖκες. Ὁ δὲ Σίμων καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπίστευσε, καὶ βαπτισθεὶς, ἦν προσκαρτερῶν τῷ Φιλίππῳ. Θεωρῶν δὲ δυνάμεις μεγάλας καὶ σημεῖα γινόμενα, ἐξίστατο. Ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἀπόστολοι, ὅτι δέδεκται ἡ Σαμάρεια τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην· οἵτινες καταβάντες προσηύξαντο περὶ αὐτῶν, ὅπως λάβωσι Πνεῦμα ἅγιον. Οὐδέπω γὰρ ἦν ἐπ' οὐδενὶ αὐτῶν ἐπιπεπτωκὸς, μόνον δὲ βεβαπτισμένοι ὑπῆρχον εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ. Τότε ἐπετίθουν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ' αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐλάμβανον Πνεῦμα ἅγιον. Ἰδὼν δὲ Σίμων, ὅτι διὰ τῆς ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τῶν ἀποστόλων δίδοται τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον, προσήνεγκεν αὐτοῖς χρήματα, λέγων· ∆ότε κἀμοὶ τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην, ἵνα ᾧ ἂν ἐπιθῶ τὰς χεῖρας, λαμβάνῃ
