They bring you fruits; you lead them up to heaven. He who gave the beginning is the cause of all other things. Therefore you too will be the cause of the catechumens there, of those in the nearby fields. And yet the baths make the farmers softer, the taverns more luxurious; but still you do these things for the sake of reputation. The markets and festivals again make them bold; but the things here, quite the contrary. For how great it is to see an elder walking in the image of Abraham, grey-haired, girded up and digging and working with his own hands! What is more desirable than that field? Here virtue is greater. There is no licentiousness there, but it has been driven away; there is no drunkenness and luxury, but it has been banished; there is no vainglory, but it has been extinguished; the abundance of goodwill shines forth there because of the simplicity. What it is to depart and enter into the house of God, and to know that he himself built it, and to throw oneself prostrate, and after the bodily labor to be present for the lamplighting and morning hymns, to have the priest at the same table, to enjoy blessings 60.148 while conversing with him, to see others coming there? This is a wall, this is the security of a field. This is the field about which he says, The smell of a full field, which the Lord has blessed. Even if without this the field is beautiful because of the tranquility, because it is full of freedom from worldly cares; when it has this also, to what will it not be equal? For a field that has a church is like the paradise of God. There is no shouting there, no disturbance, no different enemies, no heresies; it is possible to see all as friends, sharing in the same doctrines. The tranquility leads you to philosophy; taking you from this philosophy, the elder will easily care for you. For here, whatever we may say, the marketplace drives out; but there, whatever you may hear, you will hold fixed in your mind; you will be a different person in the field through him. And he will preside over them, and will be a guardian both by being present and by directing them. And how great is the expense, tell me? For the time being make a small house in the manner of a church; the one after you will make a portico, the one after him will add other things, and so the whole will be credited to you. You give a little, and you receive the reward for the whole. Therefore make a beginning, lay a foundation; or rather, exhort one another; make a contest of the matter. But now, where they must store chaff and wheat and all such things, they build easily; but where the offspring of souls must be gathered, they take no thought at all, but are forced to walk countless stadia, and to set out on long journeys, in order to go to church. And how great a good it is for the priest to be present in the church with great tranquility, so that he may approach God and speak on behalf of the village each day, on behalf of the owner! Is it a small thing, tell me, for your name to always be included in the holy offerings, and for prayers to be made to God for the village each day? how much this profits you in other matters as well! It happens that some neighbors live and have stewards; to you, then, the poor man, none of them will deign even to come; but the elder perhaps he will even invite, and will make a sharer of his table. Do you see how many good things will come from this? For the time being the village will be free of all evil suspicion; no one will bring an accusation for murder, no one for theft, no one will suspect any such thing. They have also another comfort, if sickness should ensue, if death. Not simply nor by chance are friendships formed by those who visit one another there; and the gatherings will be much more pleasant than those at the festivals. Not only the gatherings, but also the leaders themselves will be more respected on account of the elder. You surely hear that Jerusalem was more honored than other cities among the ancients; but not simply, but because of the piety that then prevailed. For this reason, where God is honored, there is nothing wicked; just as again where he is not honored, there is nothing good. There will be great security both from God and from men. Yes, I beseech you, do not take up the matter as a side-task, but eagerly. For if he who brings forth the precious from the worthless shall be as the mouth of God; he who
