by helping and winning so many souls, both those who are and those who will be until the coming of Christ, what great favor will he not enjoy from God! Build a fortress against the devil; for this is the church. From there let their hands rush to labor; first let them raise them 60.149 in prayers, and then let them go to their work. Thus there will be for them strength of body, thus the harvest will be great, thus all evils will be outside. It is not possible to describe in words the pleasure from this, until it comes to pass in deed. Do not look at this, that it has no income; if you act thus, do not act at all, unless you think you are receiving an income greater than that of the whole estate; if you are not so disposed, do not even work at it; unless you consider this work to preside over all your affairs. What is greater than this income, than to bring souls into the threshing-floor in heaven? Alas! for you do not know how great a thing it is to gain souls. Hear what Christ says to Peter: If you love me, feed my sheep. If, having seen the royal sheep or a herd of horses exposed to attack for want of a fold, you yourself had taken them and built a fold and a stable, or even appointed a shepherd, with what would the king not have rewarded you? Now you gather the flock of Christ 60.150 and appoint a shepherd, and do you not think you are doing something great? What am I saying? If he who scandalizes even one, is threatened with undergoing so great a punishment; will he who saves so many, tell me, not be saved? It is clear that he will. For what sin will he have hereafter, or even if he should have one, will he not wipe it away? From the punishment of the one who scandalizes, learn the prize of the one who saves. If the salvation of even one soul were not a matter of great concern to God, its loss would not have caused Him so much wrath. Knowing these things, therefore, let us now take hold of this spiritual work, and let each one call me, and we will help as much as we can. And if there are three owners, let them do it by contribution; but if one, he will persuade the others, his neighbors. Only be eager to accomplish this, I beseech you, so that, being well-pleasing to God in all things, we may obtain the eternal good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
60.149 HOMILY XIX. And an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying,
Arise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza; this is a desert. And
he arose and went. 1. It seems to me that these things were commanded to him while he was in Samaria, because from Jerusalem one does not go south, but north; but from Samaria, one goes south. This is a desert. He says this, so that he might not fear the supervision of the Jews. And he did not ask, Why? but arose and went. And behold, it says, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch, a man of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship. And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Great are the praises spoken concerning him; if indeed while dwelling in Ethiopia, and being surrounded by so many affairs, and when there was no festival, and being in the superstitious city, he came to worship in Jerusalem. And his diligence was great, because even while sitting in his vehicle he was reading. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and join this chariot. And Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, Do you understand what you are reading? And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? See again another instance of piety. What is this?

οὐ πρὸς μεσημβρίαν τις ἄπεισιν, ἀλλὰ πρὸς ἄρκτον· ἀπὸ δὲ Σαμαρείας πρὸς μεσημβρίαν. Αὕτη ἐστὶν ἔρημος. Τοῦτο λέγει, ὥστε μὴ φοβηθῆναι τῶν Ἰουδαίων τὴν ἐπιστασίαν. Καὶ οὐκ ἠρώτησε, διὰ τί; ἀλλ' ἀναστὰς ἐπορεύθη. Καὶ ἰδοὺ, φησὶν, ἀνὴρ Αἰθίοψ εὐνοῦχος, δυνάστης Κανδάκης τῆς βασιλίσσης Αἰθιόπων, ὃς ἦν ἐπὶ πάσης τῆς γάζης αὐτῆς, ὃς ἐληλύθει προσκυνήσων εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ. Ἦν δὲ ὑποστρέφων καὶ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ ἅρματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀνεγίνωσκε τὸν προφήτην Ἡσαΐαν. Μεγάλα ἐγκώμια τὰ περὶ τούτου εἰρημένα· εἴ γε καὶ ἐν Αἰθιοπίᾳ μένων, καὶ τοσούτοις κυκλούμενος πράγμασι, καὶ ἑορτῆς οὐκ οὔσης, καὶ ἐν τῇ δεισιδαίμονι πόλει ὢν, ἤρχετο προσκυνήσων εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ. Πολλή τε ἡ σπουδὴ, ὅτι καὶ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τοῦ ὀχήματος ἀνεγίνωσκεν. Εἶπε δὲ τὸ Πνεῦμα τῷ Φιλίππῳ· Πρόσελθε καὶ κολλήθητι τῷ ἅρματι τούτῳ. Προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος, ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος Ἡσαΐαν τὸν προφήτην, καὶ εἶπεν· Ἆρά γε γινώσκεις, ἃ ἀναγινώσκεις; Ὁ δὲ εἶπε· Πῶς γὰρ ἂν δυναίμην, ἐὰν μήτις ὁδηγήσῃ με. Ὅρα πάλιν ἄλλην εὐλάβειαν. Τίνα ταύτην;
