Jesus, he says, who appeared 60.159 to you on the road. And yet Christ did not say this to him; but he learned it from the Spirit. And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight at once, and rising up was baptized. And having taken food, he was strengthened. He only laid his hands on him, and immediately the scales fell from his eyes. Some say these were the causes of his blindness. And why did it not blind his eyes? This was more wonderful; for though they were open, he did not see; which is what happened under the law, until the name of Jesus was laid upon him. And immediately, it says, he was baptized. And having taken food, he was strengthened. So then he had been weakened both by the journey, and by fear, and by hunger and despondency. Wishing therefore to intensify his despondency, he allowed him to remain blind, until Ananias came. And lest anyone should think the blindness was a phantom, for this reason there were the scales. Therefore he needed no other teaching, but what happened became his teaching. And he was with the disciples who were in Damascus for some days. And immediately in the synagogues he proclaimed Christ, that he is the Son of God. See, immediately he was a teacher in the synagogues. He was not ashamed of the change, he was not afraid, destroying those things in which he had formerly been distinguished. He was not simply a teacher, but also in the synagogues. Thus from the outset the man was murderous, and prepared for slaughter. Do you see what a clear sign has occurred in him? By this very thing he amazed everyone. Therefore, making this clear, he adds, saying: And all who heard him were amazed, and said, ‘Is not this the one who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name, and has he not come here for this very purpose, to bring them bound to the chief priests?’ But Saul increased all the more in strength and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus, proving that this is the Christ. Since he was an expert in the law, he silenced them, and did not allow them to speak. They thought they had been delivered from such disputations when they got rid of Stephen, but they found another more forceful than Stephen. B. But let us look from the beginning at the things concerning Ananias. He did not say to him, ‘Converse with and catechize him.’ For if, when he said, ‘He is praying,’ and, ‘he has seen a man laying his hands on him,’ he did not persuade him; much more if he had said this. ‘He has seen,’ it says, ‘in a vision’; so he will not disbelieve you; do not be afraid, therefore, but go. Thus not even Philip at that time heard everything immediately. For this man is a chosen instrument of mine. This is from one who abundantly relieves fear and persuades one to be confident; if indeed he was to think so highly of him as even to suffer many things. And having said, ‘Instrument,’ so as to show that his wickedness is not by nature, he added, ‘of choice,’ to declare that he is also approved; for we choose that which is approved. Let no one hearing these things think that Ananias says this disbelieving what was said, or thinking that Christ was deceived; God forbid; but being afraid and trembling, he did not even pay attention to what was said, having heard the name of Paul; so did fear from his name seize his soul; and yet, having heard that he had blinded him, he should have been confident. And he has come here for this very purpose, he says, to bind all who call upon your name. As if to say, ‘I am afraid, lest he might take me to Jerusalem.’ Why are you casting me into the lion's mouth? Why are you betraying me to this man? He is afraid, and says these things, so that we may learn from all sides the virtue of the man. For it is not at all surprising for these things to be said by the Jews; but for them to be said by 60.160 this man, and one so afraid, this is shown to be the greatest proof of the power of God. Brother Saul. Here both the fear becomes great, and the obedience greater after the fear. Then, since he said, ‘a chosen instrument,’ lest you should say that everything is of God, leading you away from this, he adds what follows, saying: ‘To carry my name before Gentiles and kings, and the sons of Israel.’ Ananias heard what he strongly desired, that he would also stand against the Jews; wherefore he is filled not only with joy, but also with courage. Μὴ δὴ νομίσῃ τις ταῦτα ἀκούων, ὅτι ἀπιστῶν τοῖς λεγομένοις ταῦτά φησιν Ἀνανίας, ἢ ἠπατῆσθαι νομίζων τὸν Χριστόν· μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλὰ φοβούμενος καὶ τρέμων, οὐδὲ προσεῖχε τοῖς εἰρημένοις, ἀκούσας τὸ ὄνομα Παύλου· οὕτω προκατέλαβεν ὁ φόβος ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ τὴν ψυχήν· καίτοι ἀκούσας, ὅτι ἐτύφλωσεν αὐτὸν, ἔδει θαῤῥεῖν. Τί με εἰς τὸ στόμα ἐμβάλλεις τοῦ λέοντος; τί με τούτῳ προδίδως; Φοβεῖται, καὶ ταῦτα λέγει, ἵνα μάθωμεν πάντοθεν τὴν ἀρετὴν τοῦ ἀνδρός. Τὸ μὲν γὰρ παρὰ Ἰουδαίων ταῦτα λέγεσθαι, οὐδὲν θαυμαστόν· τὸ δὲ παρὰ 60.160 τούτου, καὶ οὕτω φοβηθέντος, μέγιστον τεκμήριον τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ δυνάμεως δείκνυται τοῦτο. Σαοὺλ ἀδελφέ. Εἶτα ἐπειδὴ Σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς εἶπεν, ἵνα μὴ εἴπῃς, τὸ πᾶν εἶναι Θεοῦ, ἀπάγων σε τούτου, προστίθησι τὸ ἑξῆς, λέγων· Τοῦ βαστάσαι τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐνώπιον ἐθνῶν καὶ βασιλέων, υἱῶν τε Ἰσραήλ.
