to suffer for my name's sake. These things are said both prophetically and rebukingly, if he, who was so furious, will suffer all things, but he himself is not even willing to baptize him, so that he may receive his sight. It is well, he says; let him be blinded; for this reason he is now tame, because he is blind; why do you command me to open his eyes? so that he may bind again? But do not fear what is to come; for he will use the opening of his eyes not against us, but for us; to the phrase, "So that he may receive his sight," let these things also be added. Do not be afraid; he will do you no harm, but will also suffer many things. And the wonderful thing is that he will suffer first, and then he will enter into dangers. Brother Saul, Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me. He did not say, "The one who blinded you," but, "The one who appeared to you"; thus he knew how to be moderate, and utters nothing arrogant. Just as Peter therefore said concerning the lame man; Why do you look on us, as though by our own power or piety we had made this man walk? so also this man, "Jesus, who appeared to you." As he laid his hands on him he uttered these things, and a double blindness was loosed. And by saying, "When he had received food, he was strengthened," he showed that he had been weakened both from despondency over his blindness, and from fear, and from hunger. For he did not endure to partake of food before, until having been baptized he immediately received great gifts. And he does not say, "Jesus the crucified, the Son of God, the one who works signs;" but what? "The one who appeared to you," from things familiar to him; since Christ also added nothing more, nor did He say; "I am the one who was crucified, who was raised;" but "Whom you persecute." He did not say, "The one who has been persecuted," lest He seem to be exulting and gloating. "The one who appeared to you," he says, "on the road." And yet he was not seen, but was seen through deeds. And wishing to veil the harshness of the word, he immediately added; "So that you may receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit." He did not come to condemn what had happened, but to give the gift, he says. It seems to me that both this man and Cornelius, as soon as these words were spoken, partook of the Spirit; and yet the one giving was not one of the twelve. Thus nothing human in all that concerned him, nor was it done through a man, but God was present doing these things. At the same time He also instructs him to be moderate, not leading him to the chief apostles, and shows that there is nothing human here. But he was not yet counted worthy of the Spirit that works signs, so that in this way also his faith might be shown; for he did not work miracles. And immediately, he says, in the synagogues he preached Christ, that This is the Son of God. He did not preach that He was risen, nor that He is alive; but what? He set forth the doctrine with great precision; That this is the Son of God. But they then come to unbelief on hearing these things, when they ought not only to believe, but also to be astonished. And why indeed do they not simply say that he was a persecutor, but that he was ravaging those who call upon this name 60.161? Showing through this his extreme madness. And they did not say "Jesus," from their malice not even enduring to hear the name; so savage were they. And he has come here for this purpose. We cannot say, he says, that he had previously associated with the apostles. 3. See by how many Paul is acknowledged, though being one of the enemies. But he was not only not ashamed of these things, but he even gloried in them. But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews; that is, he silenced them, did not permit them to say anything; proving that this is the Christ. Teaching, he says; for he was immediately a teacher. But when many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him. The Jews again resort to the strong argument. For they no longer seek slanderers, and accusers, and false witnesses; for they no longer endure these things; but what? Henceforth they do this themselves by themselves. For when they saw the matter intensifying, they do not even set up a court. But their plot became known to Saul; and they were watching the gates day and night, so that they might kill him. Why? Because more unbearable to them than all the signs that had already happened, than the five thousand, than the
