peace. Rightly so; for the external war had afflicted them greatly. And by the comfort of the Holy Spirit they were multiplied. The Spirit comforted them both through miracles and through works; and apart from these, also each one by himself. And it came to pass that Peter, as he passed through, came down to Lydda. And he found there a man lying down, and said to him: Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. The word was not for show, but one of confidence that it would happen. And it seems very clear to me, that the sick man believed this word, and became well. And that he was not arrogant is also clear from what follows. For he did not say: In the name of Jesus; but rather he relates it as a sign. And those dwelling in Lydda saw, and they turned to the Lord. Therefore they were not speaking in vain, that the miracles were performed for persuasion and comfort. Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple, he says, named Tabitha. And it came to pass in those days that she fell sick and died. Do you see the signs happening everywhere? Tabitha did not simply die, but having fallen into sickness. For which reason they do not call for Peter until she had died. But when the disciples heard, they sent, asking him not to delay to come to them. See, they send and call through others. And he obeys and comes, not considering it an insult, to be summoned; 60.168 so great a good is affliction; this holds our souls together. Nowhere there is wailing, nowhere lamentation. Having washed her, he says, They laid her in an upper room; that is, they did all the things for the dead. And Peter, rising up, went with them. And having gone up into the upper room, he knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body he said: Tabitha, arise. God does not allow all the signs to be worked with the same ease. But this benefited them. For indeed he was concerned not only for the salvation of others, but also for their own. He, therefore, who healed so many with his shadow, now does so many things in order to raise her up. And there are times when the faith of those approaching also cooperated. This dead woman, therefore, he raises first, calling her by name; and as if awakened from sleep, she first opened her eyes, then immediately seeing Peter she sat up, and finally she is strengthened by the touch of his hand. But you, consider for me the gain, how again also the fruit is not for display. For this reason, then, he also puts everyone outside, imitating the Teacher in this also. For where there are tears, such a mystery must not be performed; or rather, where there are miracles, tears must not be present. Hear, I beseech you, even if such a thing does not happen, yet even in the case of the dead now a great mystery is performed. Tell me, now, if while we were seated the king sent someone calling us to the palace, should we weep and lament? Angels are present, sent from the heavens and having come from there, sent by the King himself to call their fellow-servant; and you weep? Do you not know what kind of mystery is taking place? how awesome and fearful, and truly worthy of hymns and joy? 4. Do you wish to learn, so that you may know, that it is not a time for tears? This is a very great mystery of the wisdom of God. For just as leaving a certain house, the soul goes forth, hastening to its own Master; and you mourn? Therefore one ought to do this also when a child is born; for this is a better birth than that one. For it goes forth to another light, it is released as if from some prison, it goes out as from a contest. Yes, he says; in the case of the reputable you say these things well. And what is that to you, O man? For you do not do this even for the reputable. Tell me, now, what could you condemn in the little child? For what reason do you mourn him? What of the newly-illumined? For he too has come to the same state. For what reason then do you mourn him? Do you not know that just as a pure sun rises, so also a soul leaving a body with a pure conscience, shines brightly? It is not possible to see a king entering a city with such great silence, as a soul leaving a body, and departing with angels. Consider what the soul is, in what astonishment it then finds itself, in what wonder, in what pleasure. Why do you mourn? Tell me; for not in the case of sinners this

Τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοὺς ὠφέλει. Οὐ γὰρ δὴ μόνον τῆς τῶν ἄλλων ἐφρόντιζε σωτηρίας, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῆς αὐτῶν. Ὁ γοῦν τῇ σκιᾷ τοσούτους θεραπεύων, νῦν τοσαῦτα πρὸς τὸ ἐξαναστῆσαι ποιεῖ. Ἔστι δὲ ὅπου καὶ ἡ πίστις τῶν προσιόντων συνήργει. Ταύτην οὖν πρώτην νεκρὰν ἀνίστησι, καλῶν ἐξ ὀνόματος· ἢ καὶ ὥσπερ ἐξ ὕπνου ἐγερθεῖσα, πρῶτον ἤνοιξε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, εἶτα εὐθὺς ἰδοῦσα τὸν Πέτρον ἀνεκάθισε, καὶ τελευταῖον ἀπὸ τῆς χειρὸς τῆς ἁφῆς στερεοῦται. Σὺ δέ μοι σκόπει, τὸ κέδρος πῶς πάλιν καὶ τὸν καρπὸν οὐ πρὸς ἐπίδειξιν ὄντα. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο γοῦν καὶ ἐκβάλλει πάντας ἔξω, τὸν ∆ιδάσκαλον κἀν τούτῳ μιμούμενος. Ἔνθα γὰρ δάκρυα, τοιοῦτον μυστήριον οὐ δεῖ τελεῖσθαι· μᾶλλον δὲ, ἔνθα θαύματα, οὐ δεῖ δάκρυα παρεῖναι. Ἀκούσατε, παρακαλῶ, εἰ καὶ μὴ τοιοῦτόν τι γίνεται, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν τοῖς νῦν νεκροῖς μέγα τελεῖται μυστήριον. Εἰπὲ δή μοι, εἰ καθημένων ἡμῶν ἔπεμψεν ὁ βασιλεύς τινα καλῶν εἰς τὰ βασίλεια, κλαίειν ἔδει καὶ θρηνεῖν; Ἄγγελοι πάρεισιν ἐξ οὐρανῶν ἀπεσταλμένοι κἀκεῖθεν ἥκοντες, παρ' αὐτοῦ πεμφθέντες τοῦ βασιλέως τὸν σύνδουλον καλέσαι τὸν αὐτῶν· καὶ σὺ κλαίεις; Οὐκ οἶδας οἷον μυστήριόν ἐστι τὸ γινόμενον; πῶς φρικτὸν καὶ φοβερὸν, καὶ ὕμνων ἄξιον ὄντως καὶ χαρᾶς; δʹ. Βούλει μαθεῖν, ἵνα εἰδῇς, ὅτι οὐχὶ δακρύων ὁ καιρός; Τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ σοφίας μέγιστόν ἐστι τοῦτο μυστήριον. Ὥσπερ γάρ τινα οἰκίαν ἀφιεῖσα, πρόεισιν ἡ ψυχὴ πρὸς τὸν ἑαυτῆς ἐπειγομένη ∆εσπότην· σὺ δὲ πενθεῖς; Οὐκοῦν καὶ τικτομένου τοῦ παιδίου τοῦτο ποιεῖν ἐχρῆν· καὶ γὰρ τοῦτο τόκος ἐστὶν ἐκείνου βελτίων. Πρόεισι γὰρ ἐφ' ἕτερον φῶς, ἀπολύεται ὥσπερ ἀπὸ δεσμωτηρίου τινὸς, ὡς ἀπὸ ἀγῶνος ἔξεισι. Ναὶ, φησίν· ἐπὶ μὲν τῶν εὐδοκίμων καλῶς ταῦτα λέγεις. Καὶ τί πρὸς σὲ, ἄνθρωπε; σὺ γὰρ οὐδὲ ἐπὶ εὐδοκίμων τοῦτο ποιεῖς. Εἰπὲ δή μοι, τί τοῦ παιδίου καταγνῶναι ἔχοις ἂν τοῦ μικροῦ; τίνος ἕνεκεν πενθεῖς αὐτό; τί τοῦ νεοφωτίστου; καὶ γὰρ καὶ ἐκεῖνος εἰς τὸ αὐτὸ περιέστη. Τίνος οὖν ἕνεκεν πενθεῖς αὐτόν; Οὐκ οἶδας, ὅτι καθάπερ ἥλιος καθαρὸς ἄνεισιν· οὕτω καὶ ψυχὴ σῶμα ἀπολείπουσα μετὰ καθαροῦ συνειδότος, λάμπει φαιδρόν; Οὐχ οὕτω βασιλέα ἐπιβαίνοντα πόλεως μετὰ τοσαύτης ἔστι σιγῆς ἰδεῖν, ὡς ψυχὴν ἀφεῖσαν σῶμα, καὶ μετὰ ἀγγέλων ἀπιοῦσαν. Ἐννόησον τίς ἐστιν ἡ ψυχὴ, ἐν οἵᾳ τότε ἐκπλήξει γίνεται, ἐν οἵῳ θαύματι, ἐν οἵᾳ ἡδονῇ. Τί πενθεῖς; εἰπέ μοι· μὴ γὰρ ἐπὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν τοῦτο
