Amen. 60.203 HOMILY XXVII. And when day came, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what had become of Peter. And Herod, having sought for him and not found him, after examining the guards, commanded them to be led away to execution; and going down from Judea to Caesarea, he stayed there. 1. Many are perplexed how God then, on his account, allowed the children to be slain, and now again the soldiers on account of Peter, although it was possible for Him to deliver them also along with Peter. But if the angel had led out the soldiers also with Peter, the matter would have been thought to be an escape. Why then, he says, did He not arrange it differently? For what harm has been done now? If we see that those who have suffered anything unjustly and wrongly have not been harmed, we will not ask these questions. For why do you not also speak about James, why did He not deliver him? Besides, it was not 60.204 yet the time of judgment, so as to give to each according to his desert. But neither did Peter throw them into his hands. Therefore, he was more grieved at being mocked, just as his grandfather was deceived by the Magi, this made him more cut to the quick and to be a laughingstock. But it is good also to hear the words of the writer himself. When day came, he says, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what had become of Peter. And Herod, having sought for him and not found him, after examining the guards, commanded them to be led away to execution. And yet he heard from them (for he questioned them), both that the chains were loosed, and that he took his sandals, and that until that night he was with them. But what did they conceal? why then did they not also flee? And surely he ought to have marveled, he ought to have been astonished at this. Henceforth it becomes manifest to all through the death of these men, both the 60.205 miracle of God and his wickedness is quite manifest. But see how he does not hide these things, but even mentions the story so as to teach us. Then he says: And going down from Judea to Caesarea, he stayed there. Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country was nourished by the king’s country. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, and sitting on the throne, made an oration to them. And the people shouted, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God; and he was eaten by worms and gave up the ghost. But the word of God grew and multiplied. This too is no small thing. Immediately justice overtook him, even if not because of Peter, but because of his own boasting. And yet if they, he says, shouted, what is that to him? Because he accepted the cry, because he considered himself worthy of the flattery. By this, those who flatter rashly are especially instructed. See again how both were deserving of punishment, but he is punished. For now is not the time of judgment, but He punishes the one most responsible, letting the others profit from this. And the word of God grew, he says, and multiplied; that is, after this had happened. Have you seen God's economy? And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark. Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. He still mentions Barnabas first; for Paul was not yet illustrious, he had not yet worked any sign. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. What is, ministered? Preaching. Separate me, he says, Barnabas and Saul. What is, Separate me? For the work, for the apostleship. See again by whom he is ordained: by Lucius of Cyrene and

Ἀλλ' οὐδὲ ἐνέβαλλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ Πέτρος. Μᾶλλον οὖν αὐτὸν ἐλύπει τὸ ἐμπαιχθῆναι, ὥσπερ τὸν πάππον αὐτοῦ ὑπὸ τῶν μάγων ἀπατηθέντα, μᾶλλον ἐποίει διαπρίεσθαι καὶ καταγέλαστον εἶναι. Λοιπὸν φανερὸν γίνεται πᾶσι διὰ τοῦ θανάτου τούτων, καὶ τοῦ 60.205 Θεοῦ τὸ θαῦμα ἤ τε ἐκείνου κακία κατάδηλος. Ἀλλ' ὅρα. πῶς οὗτος ταῦτα οὐ κρύπτει, ἀλλὰ καὶ μέμνηται ἱστορίας ὥστε διδάξαι ἡμᾶς. Εἶτά φησι· Καὶ κατελθὼν ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας εἰς τὴν Καισάρειαν διέτριβεν. Παραχρῆμα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐπάταξεν ἄγγελος Κυρίου, ἀνθ' ὧν οὐκ ἔδωκε δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ· καὶ γενόμενος σκωληκόβρωτος ἐξέψυξεν. Ὁ δὲ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ηὔξανε καὶ ἐπληθύνετο. Οὐ μικρὸν οὐδὲ τοῦτό ἐστιν. Εὐθέως ἡ δίκη κατέλαβεν αὐτὸν, εἰ καὶ μὴ διὰ Πέτρον, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὴν αὐτοῦ μεγαληγορίαν. Καὶ μὴν εἰ ἐκεῖνοι, φησὶν, ἐβόησαν, τί πρὸς τοῦτον; Ὅτι κατεδέξατο τὴν φωνὴν, ὅτι ἄξιον ἑαυτὸν ἐνόμισεν εἶναι τῆς κολακείας. ∆ιὰ τούτου ἐκεῖνοι μάλιστα παιδεύονται οἱ κολακεύοντες εἰκῇ. Ὅρα πάλιν ἀμφοτέρους μὲν ὄντας ἀξίους τιμωρίας, τοῦτον δὲ κολαζόμενον. Οὐ γάρ ἐστι νῦν τῆς κρίσεως ὁ καιρὸς, ἀλλὰ τὸν μάλιστα ὑπεύθυνον, τοῦτον κολάζει, ἐκείνους ἀφιεὶς ἀπὸ τούτου κερδάναι. Καὶ ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ηὔξανε, φησὶ, καὶ ἐπληθύνετο· τουτέστι, τούτου γενομένου. Εἶδες Θεοῦ οἰκονομίαν; Βαρνάβας δὲ καὶ Σαῦλος ὑπέστρεψαν ἐξ Ἱερουσαλὴμ πληρώσαντες τὴν διακονίαν, συμπαραλαβόντες καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἐπικληθέντα Μάρκον. Ἦσαν δέ τινες ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ κατὰ τὴν οὖσαν Ἐκκλησίαν προφῆται καὶ διδάσκαλοι, ὅ τε Βαρνάβας καὶ Σιμεὼν ὁ καλούμενος Νίγερ, καὶ Λούκιος ὁ Κυρηναῖος, Μαναῆν τε Ἡρώδου τοῦ τετράρχου σύντροφος, καὶ Σαῦλος. Ἔτι Βαρνάβα πρῶτον μνημονεύει· οὔπω γὰρ Παῦλος ἦν λαμπρὸς, οὔπω σημεῖον οὐδὲν εἰργάσατο. Λειτουργούντων δὲ αὐτῶν τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ νηστευόντων, εἶπε τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον· Ἀφορίσατε δή μοι τὸν Βαρνάβαν καὶ Σαῦλον εἰς· τὸ ἔργον, ὃ προσκέκλημαι αὐτούς. Τότε νηστεύσαντες καὶ προσευξάμενοι καὶ ἐπιθέντες τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῖς, ἀπέλυσαν. Τί ἐστι, Λειτουργούντων; Κηρυττόντων. Ἀφορίσατέ μοι, φησὶ, τὸν Βαρνάβαν καὶ Σαῦλον.
