not obtaining those good things through zeal, he adds the prophecy saying: I have set you to be a light of the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the uttermost part of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard. This also made them more eager, that what those ought to have enjoyed upon hearing, they themselves enjoy, and it stung those all the more. And when the Gentiles heard, it says, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed; that is, set apart for God. See how it shows the speed of the benefit. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region; that is, it was carried through. As if it said: They did not stop at zeal, but also added works. See again how, being persecuted, they prepare other great things through their zeal; for they prepared to speak boldly, and to go to the Gentiles; and hear how. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said: To you, it says, it was necessary that the word should first 60.222 be spoken; but seeing you put it from you, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. Therefore, they were about to go out to the Gentiles. But see also their boldness being tempered with measure; and reasonably so. For if Peter made a defense, much more did these need to make a defense, since no one had called them there. And by saying, First, he showed that it was necessary for them also; and by saying, Necessary, he showed that for them also it was necessary. But seeing you turn away; he did not say, Woe to you, and that You are punished; but that We turn to the Gentiles. Do you see how the boldness is full of much gentleness? But the Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. Do you see how much those who opposed the preaching accomplished? into how much disgrace they led them? But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came to Iconium. Here they then did the fearsome thing that Christ commanded, saying: And if anyone will not receive you, when you depart, shake off the dust from your feet. And they did not do this simply, but because they were driven away by them. Nevertheless, this did not harm the disciples, but rather they continued in the word. Wherefore, showing this, he adds: And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Spirit. For the suffering of a teacher does not hinder boldness, but makes the disciple more eager. And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. Again they enter the synagogues. See how they did not become more timid, after saying that We turn to the Gentiles. Nevertheless, out of great abundance they take away their excuse. So that, it says, a great multitude both of Jews and Greeks believed. For it is likely that they reasoned with the Greeks as well. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. Accordingly, they then stirred up the Gentiles also, as not being sufficient themselves. Why then did they not depart from there? For they were not being persecuted, but only warred against. Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony to the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. This made for boldness; or rather, their eagerness made for boldness. For this reason, for a long time they performed no signs at all; but for the hearers to believe, was of the signs. At any rate, their boldness also contributed something. But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. Not a small thing for accusation was the division itself. This was what Christ said: I came not to send peace, but a sword. And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, they were aware of it, and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, 60.223 Lystra and Derbe, and to the region that lies round about, and there they preached the gospel. 2. Ἱκανὸν μὲν οὖν χρόνον διέτριψαν παῤῥησιαζόμενοι ἐπὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ, τῷ μαρτυροῦντι τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ, διδόντι σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα γίνεσθαι διὰ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτῶν. Τοῦτο ἐποίει τὴν παῤῥησίαν· μᾶλλον δὲ τὴν μὲν παῤῥησίαν ἐποίει ἡ αὐτῶν προθυμία. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τοῦτο μέχρι πολλοῦ οὐδαμῶς σημεῖα οὐ ποιοῦσι· τὸ δὲ πιστεῦσαι τοὺς ἀκούοντας, τῶν σημείων ἦν. Συνετέλει γοῦν τι καὶ ἡ παῤῥησία. Ἐσχίσθη δὲ τὸ πλῆθος τῆς πόλεως· καὶ οἱ μὲν ἦσαν σὺν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις, οἱ δὲ σὺν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις. Οὐ μικρὸν εἰς κατηγορίαν καὶ αὐτὸ τὸ σχισθῆναι.
