of all. For this he makes plain by saying, As many as were ordained to eternal life. And this is a proof that they received them according to the mind of God. But he said, Ordained, to show that it was not by necessity. For whom He foreknew, he says, He also predestined. They were no longer scattered in the city, but also in the country. For when the Gentiles heard, they also came forward after a little while. But the Jews stirred up the devout women, and raised up a persecution. See, they themselves then become the cause of what was done by the women. And they cast them out, he says, from their borders; not of the city only, but of the whole country. Then what was more fearful; But the disciples, he says, were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. The teachers were being persecuted, and they themselves were rejoicing. Did you see the nature of the Gospel, having much power? They poisoned, he says, the minds of the Gentiles against the brethren. That is, they slandered the apostles, accused them of countless things, wickedly disposed them who were without guile. 3. And see how everywhere he ascribes the whole to God. A long time, he says, they spent there, speaking boldly in the Lord, who bore witness to the word of His grace. Do not think this is a sign of lessening. For when they were saying, of Him who witnessed, he says, before Pontius Pilate, then boldness was shown; but here he speaks about the people. They did not wait, therefore, but saw the attack. And fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region. Where there was nowhere to inflame their anger; so they went away into the country regions, not only in cities. See both the simplicity of the Gentiles and the wickedness of the Jews. By their works they were showing that they were worthy to hear; thus they honored them from the signs alone. Some honored them as gods, but others persecuted them as destroyers; and some not only did not stumble at the preaching, but even said: The gods, having been made like men, have come down to us. But the Jews were scandalized. And they called, he says, Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes. It seems to me that Barnabas was also of a dignified appearance. This too was no small temptation that arose from great immoderation; but from this also the virtue of the apostles is shown. And see how everywhere they ascribe all things to God. Let us also emulate these; let us consider nothing to be our own, since indeed faith itself is not our own. 60.225 And that it is not our own, but the greater part is of God, hear Paul saying: And this is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God. Let us not therefore be high-minded, nor be puffed up, men, being earth and ashes, smoke and shadow. For tell me, why are you high-minded? Have you given alms and emptied out your wealth? And what is that? Consider if God had not wished to make you rich; consider the poor, or rather consider how many have given their bodies, and after giving countless things, have called themselves wretched. You gave for your own sake, Christ for yours; you gave back what was owed, Christ owed you nothing. See the uncertainty of the future, and do not be high-minded, but fear; do not diminish your virtue with arrogance. Do you truly wish to accomplish something great? Never suppose that your achievements are great. But are you a virgin? But they too were virgins, yet they gained nothing from their virginity because of their cruelty and inhumanity. Nothing is equal to humility; this is the mother and root and nurse and foundation and bond of good things; without it we are abominable and defiled and unclean. For let there be someone, if you will, raising the dead, and healing the lame, and cleansing lepers with arrogance; nothing is more defiled, nothing more impious, nothing more unholy than this. Think nothing to be your own. Do you have the word and the grace of teaching? Do not for this reason think that you have something more than others. For this reason you ought especially to be humbled, because you have been counted worthy of more gifts. For he to whom more is forgiven, will love more. Therefore, one must also be humbled, because passing over others, God has condescended to you. Fear for this reason; for often this becomes a cause of destruction for you, if you are not sober. What great
