rulers, and having brought them to the magistrates, they said: These men are greatly disturbing our city, being Jews, and they proclaim customs, which it is not lawful for us to accept or to practice, being Romans. Everywhere money is the cause of evils. O the 60.254 cruelty of the Greeks! they wanted the girl to be possessed by a demon, so that they might make money. Having seized, it says, Paul and Silas, they said: These men are greatly disturbing our city. Having done what? why then did you not drag them away before this? Being Jews, it says; so slandered was the name. And they proclaim customs, which it is not lawful for us to accept or to practice, being Romans. They brought the matter to a charge of impiety. And the crowd rose up together against them. O the irrationality! they did not examine, they gave no hearing; and yet when such a miracle had occurred, they ought to have worshipped, they ought to have regarded them as saviors and benefactors. For if you wanted money, why having found such wealth, did you not run to it? This makes them more glorious, to be able to drive out demons, than to obey them. Behold, even signs, and the love of money prevailed more. And the magistrates, having torn off their garments, commanded them to be beaten with rods; and when they had laid many stripes upon them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Paul then did it all, both the miracles and the teaching; but Silas also partakes in the dangers. What is, "But Paul, being grieved"? Seeing the wickedness, it says, of the demon, as he himself says elsewhere: For we are not ignorant of his devices. Why did they not say that "They cast out the demon," that "They acted impiously toward God," but they turn to a charge of impiety? This was a defeat for them. So also in the case of Christ they said: We have no king but Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar. And they cast them, it says, into prison. Great was the anger. Who, having received such a command, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. See, he again cast them into the inner prison, and this by divine providence. For since a great miracle was about to happen, the place outside the city is judged suitable for hearing, being free from temptations and dangers. See how he who writes the history is not ashamed to recount their occupations. And since it was a day of rest, they paid more attention to what was being said; and this city of the Philippians is not large either. Let us too, having learned these things, be ashamed of no one. Peter stays with a tanner, Paul with a seller of purple. Where is the pride? Therefore we ask God to open the heart; but God opens hearts that are willing; for it is possible to see hardened ones too. But let us look at what was said above. A woman, it says, a seller of purple, whose heart the Lord opened, to pay attention to the things spoken by Paul. So then the opening is of God; but the paying attention, of her; so that it was both divine and human. And when she was baptized, it says, she besought him, saying: If you have judged me. See, she is both baptized, and receives the apostles with such supplication, with more than Abraham. And she gave no other proof, but that from which she was saved; she did not say, if you have judged me a great woman, if a devout one; but what? Faithful to the Lord; if to the Lord, much more to you, if you do not doubt. And she did not say, "With me," but "Abide in my house," so as to show that she did this with much eagerness. Truly the woman is faithful. Tell me, who is this demon? A god, it says, a python; it is so called from the place. Do you see that 60.255 Apollo is also a demon? And since he wanted to cast them into temptations, so as to provoke them more, he incited her to speak. 2. O defiled and utterly defiled one; if then you know that they proclaim the way of salvation, why do you not depart willingly? But just as Simon wanted, saying: Give me, so that on whomever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit; this one also was doing this; since he saw them being well-reputed, he also acts hypocritically in this way, in this way he expected to be left alone in the body, if he should preach the same things. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ θαῦμα ἔμελλε γίνεσθαι μέγα, ἐπιτήδειος ὁ τόπος πρὸς τὴν ἀκρόασιν ὁ ἔξω τῆς πόλεως κρίνεται, πειρασμῶν ἀπηλλαγμένος καὶ κινδύνων. Ὅρα πῶς οὐκ αἰσχύνεται τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα καταλέγειν ὁ τὴν ἱστορίαν γράφων. Ἅτε δὴ καὶ ἀργίας οὔσης, μᾶλλον προσεῖχον τοῖς λεγομένοις· καὶ οὐδὲ ἡ πόλις αὕτη μεγάλη ἡ τῶν Φιλιππησίων. Ταῦτα δὴ μαθόντες καὶ ἡμεῖς, μηδένα ἐπαισχυνώμεθα. Παρὰ βυρσεῖ μένει Πέτρος, παρὰ πορφυροπώλιδι Παῦλος. Ποῦ ὁ τῦφος; Ἄρα τοῦ Θεοῦ δεόμεθα, ὥστε ἀνοίξαι καρδίαν· ὁ Θεὸς δὲ ἀνοίγει καρδίας τὰς βουλομένας· ἔστι γὰρ καὶ πεπηρωμένας ἰδεῖν. Ἀλλ' ἴδωμεν ἄνωθεν τὰ εἰρημένα. Γυνὴ, φησὶ, πορφυρόπωλις, ἧς ὁ Κύριος ἤνοιξε τὴν καρδίαν, προσέχειν τοῖς λαλουμένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ Παύλου. Τὸ μὲν οὖν ἀνοῖξαι, τοῦ Θεοῦ· τὸ δὲ προσέχειν, αὐτῆς· ὥστε καὶ θεῖον καὶ ἀνθρώπινον ἦν.
