let us put away idleness, that we may obtain the good things promised to us, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

60.257 HOMILY 36. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God; and the prisoners were listening to them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosed.

1. What could be equal to these souls? They were scourged, having received many stripes, they were insulted, they were in peril of the uttermost, they had been cast into the stocks, into the inner prison; and not even so did they endure to sleep, but kept vigil all night. Do you see how great a good affliction is? But we, though on soft beds, fearing no one, sleep the whole night. Perhaps for this reason they kept vigil, because they were in these circumstances. The tyranny of sleep did not seize them, nor did the pain overcome them, nor did fear cast them into despair, but these very things were rather what roused them, and filled them with much delight. But about midnight, it says, they were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. For it seemed to be a strange and wonderful thing. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were loosed. An earthquake happened, so that he might be awakened, and the doors were opened, so that he might wonder at what had happened. The prisoners did not see these things; for otherwise they would have all fled. But the jailer, waking up and seeing the prison doors opened, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do not harm yourself, for we are all here. He marveled the more at the loving-kindness of Paul; he was astounded at his courage, that though able to escape he did not escape, and that he prevented him from the slaughter. And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling, he fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Do you see how the wonder seized him? And they said, Believe in the 60.258 Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. By speaking to him immediately they showed their loving-kindness toward him. And he took them that same hour of the night and washed their wounds. And he was baptized at once, he and all his family. And he brought them up into his house and set food before them, and he rejoiced with his entire household that he had believed in God. He washed them, as if repaying the grace, and honoring them by what he did. But when it was day, the magistrates sent the lictors, saying, Let those men go. Perhaps the magistrates learned what had happened, and did not dare to release them on their own. And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying, The magistrates have sent to let you go. Therefore come out now and go in peace. But Paul said to them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they throw us out secretly? No, indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out. And the lictors reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. And they came and apologized to them, and bringing them out, they asked them to depart from the city. So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia, and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them, and departed. And of the

λαβόντες, ὑβρίσθησαν, περὶ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἐκινδύνευσαν, εἰς τὸ ξύλον ἦσαν ἐμβεβλημένοι, εἰς τὴν ἐσωτέραν φυλακήν· καὶ οὐδὲ οὕτω καθεύδειν ἠνείχοντο, ἀλλ' ἐπαννύχιζον. Ὁρᾶτε ὅσον ἡ θλῖψις ἀγαθόν; Ἡμεῖς δὲ οὐδὲ ἐν ἁπαλοῖς ὄντες στρώμασιν, οὐδένα δεδοικότες, ὅλην τὴν νύκτα καθεύδομεν. Τάχα διὰ τοῦτο ἐπαννύχιζον, ἐπειδὴ ἐν τούτοις ἦσαν.
